Anyone in the world is bound to laugh when things are good and to shed tears when sorrowful. Ordinary people wish to live laughing, but we know well through experience that our lifetime is an environment and a human life in which one cannot live only laughing. Why is that? Living laughing is close to happiness, and living weeping is close to unhappiness.
Finite human beings, who cannot change the environment given to them
Seen in this way, when one asks you whether you are happy, if there is a person laughing with joy, that person will answer that for the moment he is happy. But can that happiness be guaranteed? Any number of things can follow in succession by which that hour of laughing can turn into wretchedness. And on the other side, if one asks a wretched person, a wretched person who is weeping, “Are you unhappy?” he answers that he is unhappy. Now then, how long does it seem that unhappiness will last? He himself does not know. While weeping, a joyful thing may arise.
It is so even with the daily living of a human being who lives centering on our one generation. Even the living of one day is lived weaving such circumstances. Not only one generation but, seen over a hundred years, a thousand years, over dozens of generations — one may say that some clan is happy and some clan is a blessed clan, but seen over tens of thousands of years, hundreds of thousands of years, over a long period, that cannot be guaranteed.
If there are ten thousand people in a happy position, among those ten thousand is there even one person who desires an unhappy position? “No.” There is not one, but it is possible to drive mercilessly and push all ten thousand at once into unhappiness.
Seen in this way, if one becomes the president of America today one commands the world; the president of America may think he is happier than anyone, but when we ask whether one can guarantee that the nation called America, though it is like this now, can be in a position of glory able to lead the world after one century, after two centuries, can one do that? Can one say, “I can make it so. I am a Harvard student, I attend such a university, so I can do it by my own strength”?
For example, let us suppose there is a man who does as he pleases. If there is a person who says so, he says it with a certain limit in mind. What is that? He says it with the realm he can influence in mind. It is so with everything. Can such a person say, “Hey, sun! I am busy this morning, so do not rise on time; rise about five hours late”? Can he do that? “No.” That is a madman, a madman. And if he says, “I must go somewhere on a business trip today, so clouds, do not gather. It must not rain. The weather forecast today said this, but throw away that forecast and do as I desire,” does that work? How limited one is! Seeing that, one absolutely cannot do as one pleases with environmental conditions anywhere.
Now, one cannot do as one pleases with the four seasons. One cannot cook up a day as one pleases. Even in my breathing through my nose, can I say, “You nose, what is so busy? Why are you doing this? Breathe only a third”? Even with the blinking of the eyes, can one say, “Hey, do only about a tenth. I am busy and it is a hindrance”? And can one do as one pleases, saying, “You hair, I am busy, why do you keep growing? The Moonies are busy cutting it. It is enough to cut it about once a year; why do you keep growing? Stop!”? One cannot do as one pleases even with a single whisker. Can one do as one pleases or not? “No.”
Now, since one cannot do as one pleases with the environment, one cannot do as one pleases with such movement and motion as this universe carries out. So what must a wise person, and all the more a person who pursues happiness, do? One must not seek to occupy the environment. There is only the method of overcoming the environment and the method of following along with it. Do you understand? Only the road of overcoming and the method of following along….
One must overcome today’s difficulty and prepare for the future
Then will one do only the following along, or will one do both, including the overcoming?
Will you do both, or only one? “Both.” Why both? It is hard even to do one; how complicated it is to do two! For a person who did one to do two…. In walking, when one does one like this it would do to go slowly, but to do two one must walk quickly. It is so with breathing too…. (Laughter) So is it easier to do double than the normal? “It is harder.”
If there are ten items and it could be better to correct them centering on those ten items, one answers, “I will do ten items.” Then there is no time even to open one’s eyes. Twenty-four hours is not enough. At such a time what will you do? One says, “You eyes, do not sleep, you eyes!” There is no time even to eat on time. One says, “Throw away the food, throw away all the sleeping time.” Such a conclusion emerges. Stop the sleeping time. Is such a person a happy person or an unhappy person? “A happy person.” What do you mean, a happy person? “A happy person.” The answer is wrong; he is not a happy person but unhappy. He is in dire straits. But there is this: that “the future guarantees happiness.” Is that not so? At that moment it is wretched.
Today I spoke to Miss Ye Jin about this too: if one does a doctoral course at school and says, “What others do in seven or eight years I will finish in about three or four years!” — if the school permits such a thing, would studying be enjoyable or hard? So is studying happy? Which is it — “Ah, it is enjoyable to study so hard without sleeping,” or “Ah, I am unhappy. It would be good not to do it”? Now it is unhappy, but the future brings happiness. To the person who welcomes that, happiness draws near.
That is why we can infer such a common conclusion: “Those who are now in difficulty are happy in the future, and those who are now happy are unhappy in the future.” Is that certain? “Yes.”
Seen in this way, the happiness spoken of a moment ago…. Now they laugh he-he and dance disco and like this and that and make a great fuss. But how long will that be guaranteed? Can it be so for a whole lifetime? “No.” There is a love that sheds streams of tears in difficulty, more than that person who laughs and enjoys. In weeping, there are those who weep among the unhappy. And there are those who have much to do, and strive, and endure and overcome for the future, and weep. Among those who weep too there are two kinds, and you must know that among those who laugh too there are two kinds.
Seen broadly here, going comfortably is good in the present, and going with difficulty is good for the future. So where will you go? “The difficult road.” What road? “The difficult road.” The easy road? “No.” You answered well. (Laughter)
Then, seen over a lifetime, how about the saying, “Let us play in our youth, and suffer when old”? “We dislike it.” Why “we dislike it”? Which will you take? Is it the conclusion that doing such work in youth until one’s back is bent is walking the road of happiness? “Yes.” Is it better to tell one to carry a heavy load and go, and to beat him and send him if he does not go, or is it better to say, “You are weak, so rest. The children of the village are all playing, so you ought to do so too. You young people ought to be so”? “It is better to send him.” If such reasoning is a fact, it is the same with any organization, any organization. Should one make all the young fellows in an organization rise at dawn and work until the marrow of their bones melts, or should one let them dance and sing comfortably and become like grasshoppers? “One must make them work.”
Then what sort of organization is the best organization in the world?
An organization that works them in youth until the marrow of their bones melts and does not let them budge. Working them. An organization that can do this is the world’s best. Then to what sort of organization do Moonies belong? The organization with the most young people in the world is the Unification Church. The Unification Church makes young people suffer most and thinks, “Now they suffer to death, but in the future happiness will come.” Is this a splendid organization or an unhappy organization? “A splendid organization.”
What is a splendid organization?
Striking one blow…. Is it better to be the person who is struck, or the person who is not struck? “The person who is struck.” (Laughter) The conclusion emerges that being whipped by one’s parents in youth, and being beaten, and working unable to budge before one’s mother, and being made so that one cannot but work — that in the end the flower of happiness blooms in the future and one rises into a garden of hope. Is that good? “Yes.”
“Yes” is the word Jesus. (Laughter) Here, when one says “Jesus” it turns out to be a curse word. That is truly strange. That is why I think, “It is an America that perishes because of Jesus.” Also, when one says “God,” I thought that was a good word, but it turned out to be the worst word. So I think, “It is a people that perishes because of God.” (Laughter) Is that not so? It means they will go to hell, hell. That is why I think that America will become the base that can lead Christianity itself down the road of destruction. In fact it is becoming so now. Is that so? “Yes.”
If one listens to the Teacher’s words this morning, it is not so. The answer comes out, “It is the opposite.” The opposite conclusion emerges. One is in dire straits, so how glad one is to have met God! Ah, one is in dire straits, and when one thinks it is bad, if one meets Jesus it can become good. It is extreme and extreme. If without meeting Jesus I am better off than having met Jesus, what need is there to meet Jesus? What will you do?
Now I am with the person I love, liking each other for dear life, and if Jesus appears and says, “Hey, give me that woman,” will you give her to Jesus? When you say, “What will you do with that woman?” and he says, “What do you mean, what will I do? I will love her more than you,” will you give her, everyone? “Yes.” (Laughter)
Likewise, what will you do if God appears and says so? (Laughter) One also needs the nerve to push back and say, “However much God says so, You cannot love her as much as I do. Can You love as much as I? How can You? Show me once.” “That is right.” Push God aside. When one says, “God, step aside,” will God say, “That rascal is impudent,” or will He say, “You wretch, you deserve to die”? Which will it be? (Laughter) That can be so.
The road a wise person must choose
Now, talking like this, an hour has already passed. I do not have much time. Seen in this way, a wise person is one who has decided to go through the difficult road bearing hope for the future, and a foolish person is one who casts away the future like a dream for the sake of the happiness of the present moment.
Everyone, you all know the story of the grasshopper and the ant, do you not? So will you become grasshoppers or ants? “Ants.” These days the women say they diet and slim their waists? Ah, you things! When they are fat they make a fuss, saying, “Ah, I am fat, what a calamity”; work and become ants, why be so? Why is the ant’s waist so slender? It is slender because it works much. (Laughter) How splendid that is! Why is there such a fable? It is all a saying made after going through history. That is why that saying is a right saying.
Did the Teacher too think such thoughts long ago when he was young, or not? The time of youth comes only once…. What road would he have chosen? He chose the road a wise person must choose. And in going, does one choose the road on which I can be happy, or the road on which the nation can be happy, or the road on which the world, on which God can be happy? In proportion to the high dimension, the value of that character and the human image that governs history differ.
Now, when the Teacher in his youth said in the village that he did it for the world, and did it for God, and did it for humankind — would such words pass? In the wretched environment in which Korea had barely become independent, that is all a dreamlike story. They say it is the word of a foolish person. And so they do not listen. And so a whole lifetime passed…, and now he is coming to sixty.
When I was a youth in my teens, I said, “Hereafter America will perish, but I will not let it all perish by my own hand.” Who would believe those words? They said, “You rascal!” and struck my head with their fists…. They said I was mad. Though my mother said it, and my father said it, and my teacher said it, I did not listen to any of them. I thought that what I thought was true. Whatever the parents said and whatever the teacher said, I thought that what I thought was best. (Laughter) So if God exists, whom would God see as the normal person and whom as the greatly mad one?
When I came to America, stopping in Canada, I said to the Canadian family members, “Within three and a half years I will sweep America within the realm of my public opinion; just watch,” and they said, “Ha ha….” How could one say such a thing when one had come with bare hands, unable even to obtain a visa to America, and was now fighting? (Laughter) The other day, when I said I would go tuna fishing at Nova Scotia in Canada and told the Canadian family members to come, that fellow came right along and said, “The Teacher has done everything just as he said three years ago. Now what will he do?” Looking at him quietly, I thought, “Only then will that person’s heart repent and be forgiven.” So I said, “Let us wait and see. You rascal! Let us study it a bit,” and left it at that. (Laughter) It is like that.
When I think of such things, the conclusion emerges that I must gather all these young fellows who come to our Unification Church and work them in their youth until their backs are bent. For America and the world. I have no need. I owe you nothing at all. You are indebted to me. The words sound good. The words sound good. Does it sound plausible? When one goes into the facts it is wretched. Is that so, or not? “It is so.”
Now, do you come saying, “At other churches it is ten o’clock, eleven o’clock; one can eat breakfast and sleep one’s fill and even sleep again and then go; what kind of church is this church? If one does not get up at four, if one does not get up at three thirty, one cannot even get in here. Ah, a church such as one has never heard of or seen has appeared…. I believed in this church for nothing”?
Now, even coming here there are no chairs and one sits on a cement floor…. Where in America is there such a church? (Laughter) Why is it done this way? It is done this way for training. It is not that I do this because I have no money to buy chairs in America. I have money enough to pay cash on the spot for seats for several thousand of you and more. (Laughter. Applause) Only then are we different from American young people. Being the same as American young people, one cannot save American young people. If over there it is pitch black, we are white; if over there it is white, we are pitch black. (Applause) It must be so.
Now look. If there is a scale weight, everything is like this here, and this must be supported here; without this it will not do. Without only this, it topples over. (He spoke while writing on the board)
Unification members, who must voluntarily walk the highest road of hardship for the future
Now, if our Unification Church young people and American young people compete in strength, who would win? “We would!” How do you win? Numerically we lose, but if we fight with tenacity we win. Now, what becomes of us? This nation has many who can take part in the preliminaries, but we are the lot who can take part in the finals and take first, second and third place. (Applause) That is why our Unification Church lot are a lot who, representing the young people of the world, voluntarily walk the highest road of hardship, enduring and overcoming and suffering for the future more than any young people in the human world in the time of youth. That is why they are people who can go “ha ha” even in a position where one should weep. That is a Unification member. (Applause)
So, after working like this for four or five years and having shrunk and grown pale, despite having grown thin, if God says, “Hey, Unification members, stop; I will help you. How about it?” how splendid it would be to say, “Ah, God, I have no need of one like You. I can more than do it myself.” If one said, “I would help You; what sort of greeting is that?” how splendid that would be.
If God sought a son-in-law He would seek such a son-in-law, and if He needed a daughter-in-law He would need such a daughter-in-law. (He laughed) Would you not be so too? You too, would you not? “Yes.” It is the same. Whom does God resemble? He resembles me. I resemble God and God resembles me. Is that so? “Yes.” Did you decide that this morning? Did you decide it now, or decide it long ago? “Always.” Really “always”? “No.” Then did you decide it this morning? “Yes.” Let such people raise their hands once. “Thank you very much.” (Laughter)
Now, one act has ended. (Laughter) Now I have come to know. Knowing it, I came to know that the parents who, when I was young, took up a pickaxe handle and beat me while saying, “Hey, you rascal! You wench! Study. Do not even eat, do it; I am busy, why are you like this?” were the true parents.
At school, a teacher whom the students like is a false teacher. A teacher of whom they say, “Why is that teacher like that? That one, not dying…” is a true teacher. Is that a right saying or not a right saying? “A right saying.” Now you have come to know, have you not? “Yes.” At a workplace, one comes to know that the boss of whom one says, “That fellow the president, how severe he is, he is apt to work one even for one more hour, and follows one here and follows one there; ah, even seeing him in a dream I am in dire straits,” is a splendid boss.
Then if there is a president of America, what sort of president is good?
One came to know that a president who does not let the citizens budge, who tells them to offer devotion and be loyal for the nation of the future, is a splendid president even if he receives the title of dictator. Where in the world is there such a dictator? One must know that. It is a dictator who makes the nation so for himself and seeks to make the world so for himself. If he does so for the world, for the nation, he is not a dictator. (Applause) What, amen? “Yes.”
That parents are hard on their children and say things is for the children’s sake, not for the parents’ sake. That Reverend Moon holds meetings with you every morning is not to make Reverend Moon or the Unification Church prosper but to make America and the world prosper. The dimension is different. Do you understand? “Yes.”
Only when we live for one another does this world become a world of peace
Today’s title is “The Indignant God”; why would God be indignant?
Now, in the human world, if one toils in the time of youth, hope is without fail guaranteed in the future; but God has been suffering since the beginning of history until now, so when is there hope?
When will God’s hope be accomplished?
Has God become a young God?
Has the young God passed and has He now become an old God? How old do you suppose God is? Indeed, because God is outside the universe He has no age either. Does God circle the solar system once a year like the earth? Since He is outside it there is nothing to count. Is there anything to calculate? There is not.
Members of the established churches today think that God, having much power, made the earth too by saying, “Hey, earth, be made!” and made it in an instant. If so, what is precious about that? Is it precious for a masterpiece painting too to be simply drawn one sheet per second? (Laughter) If it were so, would there be a masterwork of God? “No.” What is God’s masterpiece? There will be something He has sought to make until now and could not, something He has sought to paint until now and could not finish. What would the subject of that masterpiece be? Would it be a woman sitting beautifully and thinking? “No.” Then would it be a man? “No.”
If there are a man and a woman, would it be a man and woman where the man sits in the east and the woman sits in the west and they look away from each other, or a man and woman who look at each other? If one draws it, would it be a man and woman whose faces are expressionless and sullen like this, or a man and woman smiling brightly? A man and woman who sit and sing to each other and like each other?
Is it a woman whose beauty is such and whose breasts are such and whose backside is such that, being qualified as the highest princess of curvaceous beauty, she says men shall worship me — such a woman? A man and woman who boast to each other? (Laughter) Is it so? Is it the man saying, “Hey there, woman! You are a being for me. You were born for me. Be for me,” and the woman saying, “You animal called man, you were born for me. Be for me”? (Laughter) “No.” Which is it? Then what would it be like?
At that moment, if the woman says, “I was born for you,” and the man says, “I was born for you,” and if the man says go this way and the woman says, “You go first. I will follow behind you,” and the man says, “No. You go first. I will follow behind,” and they fight over who goes first, which would God like? (Laughter) Would God look at that and say, “Hey, you rascals! You deserve punishment!” or would He say, “Hey! this is splendid”? “He would say it is splendid.” That is why the conclusion emerges that fighting is not bad but good. Fighting is good.
Then when nation and nation fight, if the fight broke out for the sake of the opposing nation, what would that fight be called? What sort of fight would it be called? If there were such a war, what would that war be called? Until now history has been woven as a history of war and everything has been wretched, but this war shall later be great. “Amen.” (He laughed) Then it is saying, “Hey, America! Soviet Union! For the sake of one another, it is all right even if people die in a world war.”
Now, the senators of America are making a great fuss that two thousand Soviet soldiers have come to Cuba; if those Soviet soldiers who came to Cuba said, “Hey, I have driven off all the enemies who obstruct in the vicinity of America,” how would America be? And if in this way the main force of the Soviet Union said it would march on Washington for America’s sake, and being for one another they went to the front line and fought, and one said, “I cannot go to Washington,” and the other said, “Ah, I cannot go to Moscow,” what would happen? In fact, if there were such a picture, seen by God rather than by the human world, that would be the greatest masterpiece. I like the army. God loved Reverend Moon and sent many young people; how would it be to make an army like this that fights for the sake of others? (Applause) Seeing this, I have now come to know the conclusion by which every action can be brought to goodness or brought to evil.
Then, if Heaven were from now to lay down a definition of a world of peace in order to make this world a world of peace, and if countless religious people gathered and laid down a definition, what definition would they lay down? If they laid down such a definition — fighting for others and living for others — the conclusion emerges that the world is bound to become a world of peace even if one tells it not to.
So if one is prevented from doing that, one makes it even by fighting. If the door is locked, one kicks the door down and goes in and carries on that business. At such a time, would one be arrested and sent to court for the crime of destroying a private house, sent to hell? “No.” Violence done for the sake of others is a thoroughfare to everything.
Now, some fellow kept opposing such work of being for others, so one knocked him down. By what would one judge that? (Laughter. Applause) Would one say it is bad, or say it is good? Would that person, having collapsed and then come to his senses and got up, say, “Hey, you won,” or say, “I won”? What would he say? “He would say you won….” How splendid that is! If one only turns one notion, one direction, hell turns into the kingdom of heaven, and to humankind peace comes even though one says one dislikes it. It becomes so automatically.
American young ladies, when you marry, do you go in order to receive love, or go in order to love? “In order to love.” For how many years? If at death one said in one’s testament, “My purpose in coming to this house was to give love to the full, but though I underwent a thousand hardships I could not fulfill my love, and I go pitiably. My sons and daughters, do you complete this love eternally for your generation” — when those sons and daughters too could not complete love and those ancestors too could not complete love, is that han (한)? Is that unhappiness? “No.” Is that happy or unhappy? “Happy.” What is happy about a whole lifetime of that? It was suffering to death. “No.”
If one had such a thought, would divorce arise in American families today? “No.” And if the American young fellows had such a thought, would the mother and father fight in the family? Would they separate? Also, if the teacher is for the disciples and the disciples are for the teacher, would the school go well or not go well? “It would go well.”
The educational method of America today is individualistic; what use is that? Cut it all off from the branch. Cut it off. Cut it off completely. Since there is no one but Reverend Moon who says such words, they dislike hearing this…. From the cabinet of America on, all must cut off such a thought. Reverend Moon sees that God’s making America like this was not for America but for the world. He did not bless you Americans so that you alone would eat well and live well. God blessed so that the world would eat well and live well. Since Heaven blessed you so that you would live for others, and you alone are eating well…. Do you think God blessed because He liked white people? He blessed looking at the humankind of the world. (Applause)
The Unification Church, which must establish a new tradition of living for others
Why is God an indignant God?
Because God’s thought until now has been this thought. There was no one who knew that and did it. When He gave a blessing, they thought, “Ah, now with this much I will live comfortably.” That is why Reverend Moon vowed before God, “I will not be such a man.” It is not that I like houses, Belvedere or East Garden. I have no thought of such things at all. The person standing here can live even in a tent. I have lived the life of a beggar under a bridge, and done everything.
When I am at Belvedere and at East Garden, God does not come and console me, but at such times He always came and consoled me. Which is better? Even now, while living at East Garden I do not think East Garden is good. Even lying down I do not think such thoughts.
I must establish the international dignity of the Unification Church, and the guests who come are increasingly of the upper class; would it do to live under a straw mat? If I live that way, you must hereafter live more wretchedly than I. You must live more wretchedly. The Unification Church need not work hard in order to live better. I bought all these houses with my own money. All with my own money….
I have bought dozens of houses for the family members of the Unification Church. Now, those family members ought to gather and know enough to buy a house for me. “That is right.” Because they do not do it, I dislike it. I do not wish to be indebted even for that. Why is that? Instead of buying me a house, I told them to buy houses for the pitiable people of that nation. So I will now buy houses for black people too. At some point I will do it. All the five-colored races…. This house for black people, this house for white people, this house for yellow people — I will arrange them in a mixed pattern like that. (Applause)
So establish a new tradition. These white people should carry on a movement of loving black people such as has not existed in the history of white people. Black people, because they have been bitter and indignant until now, ought to take revenge, but let them love instead; we must carry on such a movement of turning things over. And so later we marry white people and black people to each other.
What troubled me greatly this time — until now I had not been flustered since coming to America, but the one thing that flustered me, the first thing that flustered me since coming here to America, was that far too many white people rushed forward saying they would marry black people. So I had a hard time restraining this. (Applause) Do not applaud for the Teacher. (Laughter) Applaud for the white people.
Seeing history in this way, seeing the world in this way, what sort of person is a saint and a person who can inherit kingly authority when he goes to the heavenly kingdom? There is no one but a person who strove to live for Heaven and for humankind and for God and for the whole, and who lived so and departed. Do you understand? Would there be anyone to complain when he goes to that nation? “No.” How is it? Think about it once. Do you not wish to say, “I want to become that; set that person aside and let me do it”? Do you not think it would be good if He set others aside and let you do it?
Then what would God do?
Would He say, “Hey, you rascal! You could do so if you had done more than those people and come, but since you did not, it will not do,” or would He not? If one said, “I did it. I did not fall short of that person,” and another too said, “I too did not fall short of that person,” what do you think God would do? Then He asks, “How much more persecution did you receive in your work?” How is it? Do those words sound plausible? “Yes.” Who suffered more, who received more persecution, who entered prison and was more despised, who received more difficult pain — such questions become the question. Is that wrong or not wrong? “Not wrong.”
That is why, does Reverend Moon of the Unification Church receive persecution well or not? “He receives it well.” I am so. I think that since the beginning of history, as a religious leader, the one who has received much persecution and eaten many curses in a short period before the humankind of the world is Reverend Moon, number one. Since I do bad things to you I deserve to be opposed. Have I done anything good? “No.” Ah, taking drugs and living dissolutely is what Americans like, and I prevent them from doing what they like, so that is a sin, is it not? “No.” Here one cannot even court, cannot write even one date letter, and if one goes and sits beside a man and merely touches his hand, all of this…. What pleasure is there in living like that? What is good about that? And what does one seek to do by it? Do I seek to make you unhappy, or seek to make you happy? “You seek to make us happy.” What happiness is that?
Though one undergoes many difficulties, one must live a life of being for others
Now then, did you do well to enter the Unification Church? “Yes.” Then what sort of person will Reverend Moon like? Does he like a person who complains even while suffering? “No.” “Digest.” What do you mean, digest? (Laughter) The Unification Church lot must like it even while being beaten. (Striking the family members who were sitting) Every morning they all come asking to be struck once. Here one must come at least at one or two in the morning to get a seat; otherwise one cannot sit.
Today the black young ladies discussed that they must come earlier than the white people and came, did they not? (Laughter) So this is an incomprehensible organization. It is an incomprehensible organization. But to us it is fitting and proper. Even when I make you work, I do not say to you that you have toiled. I say, “What?” Is that good? “Yes.” Why? For what reason? Because the genealogy of the heavenly kingdom is now being organized. When a new genealogy is organized in the heavenly kingdom, registration breaks out.
What is first here? Is it a woman who adorns herself beautifully, dresses well, sprays perfume and walks smartly as the object of the attention of all the men on Fifth Avenue in New York? “No.” Then what is it? It is a person who goes to the doorstep and does fundraising in order to be for others, and who says she will be for others even while begging. Wretched, driven, such people….
Does it seem Reverend Moon says this as an expedient just to sound good to the ear, or does it seem it is real? “It is real.” I have done it that way. I did it that way and today it has become like this. I went to England and made among English people those who would die for me if told to die, and in Germany and in any nation I have made people who will lay down their lives and go if I only command. Why is that? This America, this nation with much money, into which all the politicians of the world come seeking to extract money — Reverend Moon lays out all the property he has and gives it, for this dying America…. Is he doing so or not? “He is doing so.”
Now I will take hold of you and make you like me for the humankind of the world. I will say, “Sell your house, sell the land you have in America, and live for the humankind of the world.” Will you do that, or not? “We will do it.” Let those who say they will do it raise their hands. You rascals, it will not do. After promising and going along like this, when the Teacher dies, you will say that it was a promise before he died and after his death you will not do it. Will you do it even after he dies? “We will do it.” Until when will you keep that promise? Must you hand it over to your sons and daughters just as it is and go, or will you say to your sons and daughters, “It is hard, so stop. Reverend Moon is sickening. Eating well and living well is the trump card”? “Hand it over to the sons and daughters….” What will you do? Then what happens? There is no war…. Even if there is war it is a good war. Such a war is all right even if it exists.
Long ago, while others picked pockets, I went about putting money into other people’s wallets. I carried on such business. (Laughter. Applause) Whether that felt good or bad — it felt so good that even thinking of it now it feels good. Do you understand what I mean? “Yes.” It was simply a mad act. It was a mad act. And while doing so I received no praise but ate curses for a whole lifetime…. Everywhere I went they disliked it.
Yet when I met women and talked, all the women followed at my heels. When I met men, the fellow carrying a back-frame followed carrying his frame. The fellow leading a cow followed leading the cow. Not only did they follow leading a cow, but even the village dogs followed without barking. In the morning the husband goes to the company, but does she know how to cook? She ought to go out to the field and work, but does she know how to work? So one is bound to eat curses.
They simply asked for the words. And so until three or four in the morning, sleeping about two hours a day. Continuing that business, this, this…. Think about it. If there were a hundred people, all hundred would complain. There is not one person who says Reverend Moon is good. They all say they will beat Reverend Moon to death. All manner of rumors arise, and this and that and an uproar…. Will you too be so? “No.”
One must become a splendid Unification member trained in the thought of being for others
Everyone, these days, doing home church, do you not receive opposition? “We do.” Now, even if they say, “I have no need of you, no need,” one keeps going. Even if told not to come, one takes a broom and goes and sweeps the yard. If snow has fallen one clears the snow, and does everything. If there is water in the ditch one clears the ditch too. And even so, on the day that master fights, saying, “Look here, I said I dislike it, why are you like this?” the villagers say, “What is this fellow?” and fight in my place. Any number of such things arise. How splendid a law of war is that! Such things happen, do they not? “Yes.” Why is that?
Everyone, having come to know the Teacher, when someone curses the Teacher, does the thought not already arise, “You rascals! This American society! I will fight in his place”? The more you know that I am persecuted and that it is so, the more indignant you are, are you not? Since you know that the Teacher has suffered, your hearts are heavy, are they not? The more you know that the Teacher eats curses for nothing, and such things, can your hearts stay still? You say, “If this government should so much as kill Reverend Moon, let us see what happens. There will be a riot,” do you not? “That is so.” Now I have come to know. We must become warriors who can fight at the risk of our lives in such a public aspect, for such a road.
However much you carry on such business, how many years is it? People of ten years, people of thirty years, at longest forty years, fifty years, sixty years…. All under a hundred years. What about God? For how many years does God do it? “Six thousand years.” Six thousand years is the number of years in the Bible; God stakes eternity on this work….
When one dies and goes to the next world and finds out, in that world this law is without fail applied, and when at that time one has not made this preparation, how breathless one will be! A person who eats bread is used to bread and likes bread, does he not? Training you this way here is in order that you may not suffocate when you go there. What is hell? In breathing in, a little air comes in, and in breathing out, a little air goes out. There is no hell more fearsome than that. Try once what that hell is like. You will know at once. The more one breathes the better it all is. If one cannot breathe it is better simply to die.
Centering on this principle, world unification is possible. Philosophical thought today resolves everything centering on itself, but on the day that logical method is turned into a world that is for the object partner, the world will become a unified world with great speed. How splendid is this thought — that going into the house and being for the whole house be thought of as a training process for the clan hereafter, and that what one does going into the world of the clan be thought of as a training process for the people, and that being for the people be thought of as a training process for the world.
Then, when one gets there, going to the heavenly kingdom, whom will one seek out and begin education with? One will begin education centering on Reverend Moon’s thought. How splendid this is! There is no such thought. There is nowhere that has taught that, until now. How will you feel when you get there? Will you feel good or bad? “Good.” How good will it be? “Very, very.” (Laughter) That is why, how great are the steps of a man who, though he lives upon the earth, can exert influence upon the heavenly kingdom!
The water vessel of the heavenly kingdom is not yet full of water, but on the day Reverend Moon pours the water it is filled. How splendid this is! Will you feel good at that time? “Yes.” At that time you will say, “Ah, our Teacher is the best.” (Applause) When you do so upon this earth you can at once be connected and be glad, but God does not do this a little; He continues it eternally. You must know that. How much harder it is for God!
Adam and Eve are the outer God wearing substance
Who is Adam? He is God’s body. Who was Adam? He was God’s body. You must know that. The established churches do not know who Adam is, worse than kindergarten children. He is the visible God. He is the visible God. Adam is in the position of the visible God.
Everyone, you have a mind, do you not? “Yes.” Where is the mind? Can you see it? “No.” So is your mind you, or are you the mind? Which is it? That mind is different from me. This body simply seeks to eat and sleep and live comfortably in every way, but the mind says it must not be so and keeps telling one to suffer. This became so because of the fall. I see it not as the absolute God having made it so, but as being so because of the fall. In order to make these one, religion is necessary. What sort of person? The purpose of religion is not to make a person who does as the body would have it, but to make a person who does as the mind would have it. Likewise, within Adam God is arranged to be there and to give commands.
Now then, why must Adam be so? At present you cannot go to the spirit world and see God. God is not visible. Everyone, is force visible? Is force visible? Because God is the substantial body of energy, one cannot see Him even going to the spirit world. He has no body. That is why, in order to guide and govern the substantial world, He must wear substance. Do you understand? Then what sort of God is God? If Adam did not fall but reached perfection and lived upon the earth and then went to the heavenly world, He becomes the God clothed in that form of Adam. The invisible God and the visible Adam become one. When it becomes so, Adam’s laughing “ha ha ha” is God’s laughing “ha ha ha,” and that is at once the universe laughing “ha ha ha.” Do you understand what I mean?
That the formless God may appear as a God wearing substance is the creation of the human created world. The creation of this world is in order that the formless deity may appear as a substantial God. What is that? One must draw poles like the South Pole and the North Pole for it to become a single magnet. This is inner and this is outer. (He spoke while writing on the board) And so such a principle emerges by which the invisible God and the visible God can achieve harmony. Only then can this at last carry out the action of turning. This goes to this place, and this goes to this place, and the inner goes outward and the outer goes inward and they must carry on the business of becoming one. With what does one do it? With love.
Why does one like love? Yesterday I went to the seminary and said this. How did the word “love” come about? It was made taking abbreviations. “Lo” is taken as an abbreviation of “long.” And what is “ve”? It is “very.” Taking those and making them an abbreviation is “love.” That is, love means very long. (Applause) With the power of love one can achieve harmony between the invisible world and the visible world.
That is why, when you enter puberty, the mind too is stirred and the face too is stirred. When one reaches that position, body and mind become one. Do you understand what I mean? God too with love…. The invisible world and the visible world become one through love.
What is the man? He is the God-man, and what is the woman? She is the God-woman. The God-man is Adam and the God-woman is Eve, and because Eve fell, God’s wife was made to fall. That is why everyone has the desire to become one with God, to make God my own and to make God’s love my own.
So what does one seek to do upon occupying God? One seeks to make God’s love one’s own. When it becomes so one cannot speak. Before that one says one dislikes everything. Even if given more one dislikes it and says it does not matter at all. One completely dislikes it. That is why the people of the world all say they will make the world their own and make God their own and so on; why is that? Because the original nature is so. Because there is an original character formed so, as a nature that can be so, that mind pursues it night and day, always.
Unification members, who must inherit Heaven’s tradition and become sons and daughters of God
Now, who is Eve? If she had not fallen, what would she be? “God-woman.” So if God is the king of the universe, if He is the king of the universe, what is Eve? “Queen.” You do know something. (Laughter) That is why human beings inherit the tradition of kingship. Does that feel good or bad? “Good.” Because there is such a principle, one can call God one’s actual Father. There is such principled content, such content of the Principle of Creation. Do you understand what I mean?
If you had not fallen, what sort of sons and daughters would you be?
Princes and princesses. Whose princes and princesses? Princes and princesses of God. However ugly one’s face may be, if one asks, “What is your genealogy?” one says, “I am a princess of God”; and if one asks, “What is your genealogy?” one calls oneself “a prince of God.” (Applause)
Then what is the Unification Church a place for doing?
What is this a place for doing? It is a place for finding God again as Father and becoming sons and daughters of that Father. The Unification Church is a place that seeks to make it so that He cannot but say, “You are my son and my daughter,” and cannot but love even if He tried not to. That is why, when one says one has begun God’s work, because God’s purpose is to save the world, one says, “God, it is all right if You do not help me. It is all right if You do not love me,” and loves the world; and after doing all the work and taking a nap, God comes seeking and must be indebted to me.
How would it be seen by God?
Would He like it, or would He be like this? (He made a face) In words He curses, but inwardly He says it is good. I absolutely do not pray, “God, help me.” I help God, I do. Now, even while fighting the American government and Congress, I say, “God, do not worry,” and do it alone. Giving all my wisdom and all my effort and all the strength I have, I will fight and win. (Applause)
What are you? “Princess of God.” Then what must a princess do? In being for the universe one must be the same as God. Only then can one inherit God’s tradition. If one has received God’s love, one cannot but inherit the tradition of God’s kingdom. It will not do not to become a person who can receive God’s love.
That God looks on shedding tears is in order to find such a person. If God had feet and walked, He would walk in order to meet such a person. If God had thought, He would think of such a person.
If God had blessing, if He were keeping blessing in store, it would be in order to meet such a person. Even if the world perishes, on the day Reverend Moon goes without perishing, Reverend Moon is bound to become automatically the number one rich man in the world. I will have money without limit…, and people without limit, and ability without limit, and boasts without limit, and there will be nothing I cannot do. Think about it. Even if I kick you away saying, “Ah, I do not want to love you. Go away, all of you,” someone will live on behind and weep, and if I say, “I dislike seeing you weep,” he must say, “Ah, then I will laugh,” and follow.
You feel good when you meet the Teacher, do you not? “Yes.” The Teacher’s face is nothing special. It is nothing special, yet somehow when one meets the Teacher this room seems full, and though all these people are here, if the Teacher alone is not there it seems utterly empty…. (Laughter) When I go to Korea in a few days, this America will feel utterly empty and you will want to go to Korea. Have you felt such a thing? “Yes.” Though there are so many people, when the person one loves is not there one says, “There is no one at all.” Why is that? Why would that be?
Would it be easy to find a person whom God can like? Where is there a greater hell than God sitting alone on the throne of the heavenly kingdom? Think about it. Since in the world there is no one but Reverend Moon who can be a conversation partner and who, when He speaks and commands, can stir and move, it is arranged that if Reverend Moon goes east He follows east, and if he goes west He follows west. (Applause)
Everyone, when one goes to a bakery there is the smell of bread, is there not?
Just as that smell feels good, coming here there ought to be the smell of love; since it does not come, it is utterly empty. I do not know whether that is a lie of mine. I believe so and am consoled so and live thinking so; if it is not so, then I am a person who told a lie, a pitiable person. Let those who say it is a fact raise their hands, really honestly.
Everyone, you became so because you were brainwashed? “No.” Brainwashing is good. Since one has been naturally united with God’s love, there is nothing better than that. God too has been brainwashed by that love and has been toiling until now.
You too, all of you, the young women here — were you not born as women in order to give some man the brainwashing of love? It is the same. “Amen.” It seems good, from the way you say “amen.” You must do it loudly; what is that “amen” (in a small voice)? One must say, “Ah-ha-ha meh-en.” (Laughter) “Ah” is surprise, and “men” means everyone, all men. “Ah, I am surprised!” How good that is! Does that not feel good? (He laughed. Applause) Ah, from laughing my side hurts. (Laughter) So today is a good day.
Thinking of God’s han, one must endure hardship and fight on
Now, when we think of this, God has endured until now looking toward that day, so can we not endure thirty years? Can we not endure a lifetime? Can one pray like this: “Ah, God! I cannot live. Help me”? It makes no sense. How foolish and how lamentable that is! How splendid it is to say even of difficult things, “God, do not worry. I will do it.” Wind, blow! Think whether it can block the road God walks. Typhoon, blow! Whether David or Frederick, blow, you wind! How splendid that is!
Since our Father came alone taking responsibility for all the difficulties of such ages of history, if I cannot take responsibility for these few decades I have no qualification as a son. Not being able even to do that, and calling oneself a son or daughter of God? You lot of the established churches! Where are there such thieves as those who say, “Ah, bless our sons and daughters, and bless our church, and give all the blessing to me”? I have found out that God dislikes such things. God dislikes such things most of all.
Now, does it seem it would be so or not? “It seems it would be so.” Intellectually, rationally…. If you were God, how would it be? Would you be on Reverend Moon’s side, or on the side of the established church ministers? “On Reverend Moon’s side.” On Reverend Moon’s side, is it not? It is Reverend Moon’s side. Then did you do well to enter? “Yes.” Formerly you shed streams of tears because of yourselves, but now you eat and shed tears because of others. If you are squeezed that much it is all right to cry out and surrender. It is all right to surrender.
When one thinks such thoughts, can one complain?
Can one complain or not? “No!” Reverend Moon walked a road of hardship for a whole lifetime and underwent all manner of humiliations, but he never once complained. He did not complain before God. One ought to know that it is fitting. Would one say it is hard? Would one open one’s mouth and say it is hard? “No.” “Ah, I am twenty-eight, or thirty-two, or thirty-five and have become an old maid; who would take me?” But if one would go, go, and if not, not; I go for God’s sake. That is one’s boast. Since one is different from others, that is one’s boast. The people of the world all say they will receive God’s blessing, but Reverend Moon thinks that living a whole lifetime receiving calamity is his boast before God. Because one is different from others, God likes it. Though I was born looking terrible, at least in heart….
For example, with apologies to Mother — if I had not married and were standing firm like this, and if I said, “Let candidates who would marry me come forward,” there would be English people, and German people, and American people, and the daughters of some judge…. All manner of people would come forward. How about it? Does it seem it would be so, or not? “It seems it would be so.” (Laughter) In that sense our Mother is happy; I think so. Also, though Reverend Moon looks stout like this, Mother holds him up well. (Laughter)
At times the spirit world teaches me. It teaches me, “Do it this way.” The fact that this small man lives with this universe as his stage — how splendid that is! If you wish to see the Teacher, if you pray you will see him. Such a thing is possible. So that is a riddle. It is a mystery. Why is that? It is bound to be so because one draws near through the thought God originally held.
Become a living sacrificial offering that resolves God’s indignation
How many hours has it been already?
“Three hours.” It has already been three hours. In that time one could board an airplane here and go to Denver. (Laughter) So how tedious it must have been! “No.” Really? “Yes.” Then I spoke interestingly? “Yes.” Then will you become such a lot, or not? “We will.” Let us liberate the indignant God with our own hands. Let us break through this. How good, how splendid a thought this is! (Applause)
How indignant God is — He has been robbed of His throne. He has been robbed of His throne by the enemy. You must know the fact that God, unable to become a God of shining light, holds a history of grief. Although He is the king of His own nation, the king of the universe, although the king is alive, He is despised as though the king were dead. In the end His ideal was violated, and all His beloved sons and daughters were violated, and the earth became completely a playground for the enemy’s toying.
This earth was a gift of God’s love. So one cannot smash the earth, which is a gift of love. You must know that it is the Father’s heart to wish to retake sovereignty from the enemy and keep that gift as something of even greater value than of old. And so Satan, using tens of thousands of devices, as the Last Days draw near, has made all the young people of America perish through free sex, although America is the nation God loves.
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden did free sex as adolescents and perished, and the whole world has become that state of affairs. Just as God, who had blessed His own direct sons and daughters, Adam and Eve, was toyed with by the enemy and they perished, will He leave this America, which has become like this, just as it is? If it is to be a disgrace, He strikes it away. Although He endured and awaited and blessed America for the one day of glory, it has become a den of the enemy and an America that drives nails into God’s breast. How corrupt this is! How corrupt this is!
He wished to admonish this and to break this apart, but Reverend Moon appeared and said, “Your heart and Your will are to smash these young people who are rotting away like this, but I will take responsibility, so wait only a few years. I will give all the devotion I have and try to block this,” and He said, “Is that so? Try it,” and that is the state of affairs. And so, training these young fellows day and night, he has made the people of today. That is the Teacher, in the end. The Teacher’s prayer is, “Seeing what I have made like this, can You endure for ten years or twenty years?” You must know that.
Now, in such a case, can you be comfortable? “No.” The Unification Church itself must be punished. Let those fellows who wish to be comfortable withdraw! Such people are people who ruin God’s will, people who ruin the Unification Church, people who cannot be forgiven before Reverend Moon. You must know that they are enemies. Do you understand what that means? “Yes.”
So one must give all the strength one has. Otherwise, does it seem America will perish or live? “It will perish.” Try speaking to scholars; if one asks, “Is there a future for America or not?” they will all answer that question, “There is none.” You must know that God is wretched and Reverend Moon is wretched. You must know the fact that God is filled with indignation and Reverend Moon is filled with indignation. There is no time, no time. Do you understand what I mean? “Yes.” You have no room to complain. How glorious it would be to become, by death, a living sacrificial offering that can resolve Your han, a stone that can block the bursting dam!
Holding such an indignant heart, when Reverend Moon goes to Korea now I do not know when I will come, because I am busy. In the meantime, can you guard Belvedere and carry on a movement of doubling our family members in New York? “Yes!”
God’s indignation and Reverend Moon’s indignation must be resolved. I am an indignant person, in fact. Now, let those who say they will take that responsibility close their eyes and raise their hands. God bless you!
