Former Headquarters Church, Korea
The center of a family is the parents. If, centering upon those parents, there comes to be no central figure able to continue the line of that household and inherit the will of the parents, that family can be called a family without hope.
Just as it is with a family, seen centering upon a nation, if there is an ideology and thought centering upon that nation’s sovereign, there must be one who stands in the stead, able to succeed to and bear responsibility for that penetrating thought.
Yet when there comes to be no such one who stands in the stead, the prospects of that nation, that is, that nation’s future, can be said to be without hope. Likewise, seen from the perspective of this world, this world too is the same.
God, Pitiable Because There Was No Central Figure Able to Stand in the Stead of the Will
Seen thus, we can know that, whether in the family centering upon the individual today, or in this nation to which we belong, there has always been one who stands in the stead, continuing to flow forth together with history.
If there were a nation centering upon families that had become firm and completely settled, that nation could not but stand upon a foundation firm worldwide.
From this viewpoint, seen in the case of the history of the Providence of Restoration centering upon God, or the history of the providence of salvation, there ought to be God’s family, there ought to be God’s clan, there ought to be God’s people, nation, and world. Yet the family, or the people, nation, and world that God has been seeking through the providential content have not existed until now.
For this reason, those who believe in Heaven must without fail become the center of a family, or the center of a people and nation, and, further, the center of the world; it needs no saying twice.
But we know that in this world until now the authority of Heaven that can become such a center has not been decided. Far from the center of the world, even the center of a nation has not yet been decided. It goes without saying that the center of a nation has not been decided, but first, one complete family standard that God comes seeking must be decided.
Then, when we soberly consider whether the center of the family that God desires has been decided, the great majority of people will feel of themselves that they have not done so. Then, seen centering upon my one individual self as a member of society, when we ask whether my one individual self has become something able to be completely decided as one center that God needs and desires, we can know that this too is not so.
The minds of us human beings change morning and evening. That, centering upon such a self, one pursues a family, a nation, or a world able to be consistent through an eternal ideology, is because there is God’s Will and a purpose that God desires.
Nevertheless, when we come to realize the fact that I am facing that purpose has not decided on one center, we must know how pitiable one is; God must bring that work to accomplishment.
When the sovereign of a nation ought to bear responsibility for that nation’s sovereignty himself, yet has no foundation able to bear responsibility, he is an utterly unhappy person.
Even if the people standing in such a position do not feel it, the very one who bears responsibility for it will feel that he is more pitiable than anyone. He cannot but undergo a suffering that comes with crossing over time.
Of course he must undergo national suffering, but he must also undergo the suffering that breaks out in that environment. Centering upon such a self, he cannot overcome that suffering however he might try.
We can infer and know that the central being in such a position is in a position where he must, bearing inner and outer suffering, stake his life, and seek his way through the crossroads of life and death.
Does God truly exist?
If He exists, He too surely has a purpose. That purpose is surely not some individual purpose but a purpose of the whole. If He is without a doubt One bearing the mission of completely accomplishing such a purpose of the whole, we must know in what a miserable position He is. Even though He has much ability and possesses omnipotent, omniscient authority, since the foundation and the environment able to exercise that ability have not been furnished, we can infer and know how great His inner suffering and outer distress must be.
Seen thus, when one who bears responsibility for a family comes to stand in a position unable to bear responsibility for the family, he is more pitiable than anyone in that family; or, seen centering upon a people, when the central being able to represent the people comes to be unable to fulfill his responsibility for the people, he becomes more pitiable than anyone among that people.
Further, seen even in the case of a nation, when the representative of that nation comes to be unable to complete the responsibility of his true intent, we must know that he is more pitiable than anyone in the nation.
Inferring from such facts, if God, who must bear responsibility for this cosmic history, is in a position unable to fulfill that responsibility, we cannot but think that He is more pitiable than anyone. This is not merely our thought; the fact is so.
God’s Wish and the Right Posture of Faith
Then what is it that He, crossing this hour and crossing the moment today, demands?
He demands that the center be decided. If it is a family, He demands that the standard of the family be able to accord with God’s true intent, centering upon the family. Or if it is the Republic of Korea, He demands that the center be able to stand in the stead of the nation’s purpose that He demands be decided, centering upon the nation called the Republic of Korea. Seen centering upon the stage of the whole world today, God is looking and advancing centering upon some purpose for setting the world in order. That God will undoubtedly demand a world able to become at least a relative partner in achieving one standard, one central foundation able to accord with God.
Then who must be the being able, before such a God, to decide the central position before Heaven, centering upon the individual if it is the individual, the family if the family, the clan if the clan, the people if the people, and further, the nation and the world?
In this world today, there are countless religions. There is Christianity, Buddhism, Confucianism, and countless other religions besides.
Among those religious bodies, which religion could be the true one?
The true religion is not a religion with such outward content. It must be a religion that stands upon a standard able to be connected through that inner heart. From this position, seen centering upon the doctrine of Christianity, Christianity attends God as parent. Therefore, Christianity calls all people children centering upon God, and calls all the myriad people who believe in God brothers.
Seen in the case of such content, we can know that the formation of a nation too must have one family as its origin. Christianity too has content able to connect its ideology to the world, centering upon the family.
Then does the present Christianity truly stand in a position able to carry out the overall responsibility of deciding all the content of the whole that Heaven desires?
Is there a Christianity carrying out that responsibility?
There is not. So the conclusion comes out that such a religion has not yet appeared.
Then is such a religion appearing?
If it is appearing, God Himself can inwardly hold a hope. But if such a religion has not yet appeared, God cannot but feel a great grief proportional to the greatness of all His labor throughout history.
If one stands in a position of shouldering responsibility and having to carry out responsibility in this age, one must know that one is in a position where one cannot but criticize this age. Then, seen centering upon each of us ourselves, what have we come here to do?
For what have we been rallied together?
The one single purpose is to become an inner companion of the heart before that God who has been in a sorrowful and pitiable place until now. If even that cannot be done, then be at least one outer stepping stone. In crossing a river, be a stepping-stone or a bridge. Be at least one molecule used in the crossing by which God accomplishes His purpose.
If one had become such a being, it would be one thing, but since one has not even become that, God has been in sorrow until now as well.
When we ask whether one has come to incur debt before God or come to repay debt incurred, you who are gathered here today must make the resolve that you have come to reduce debt. In reducing debt, one must be able to reduce not only the debt for my individual self but also settle the debt for the family, reduce debt in the stead of the people and the nation, and reduce debt in the stead of the world. It is a path someone must go if I do not go and something someone must reduce the debt of if I do not accomplish it. So I must make firm the conviction to complete responsibility before Heaven.
To Become One Who Stands in the Stead
Then, seen centering upon a family, how must one act to become one who stands in the stead, able to carry on the will of the parents?
First, one must share the will. A person able to be together with all the will of the parents can become one who stands in the stead. To do so, that son must know the parents’ will, thinking, “Our mother and father are going this way to set up this family, centering upon such a will,” and must lead that family. That is, thinking of the family’s future, he must accord with that idea, centering upon the purpose the family must walk.
Then what does it accomplish merely to share such a will?
What does it accomplish, however much the will is shared? By merely sharing it, one cannot become one who stands in the stead of the parents. One must uphold that will and put it into practice, centering upon that will. When one does so, if that will is eternal, all the inner heart within me too becomes eternal.
If the will is eternal, the goal of action too must be eternal. Without such a starting point, one cannot stand in the position of one who stands in the stead. To become one who stands in the stead, the will must be shared, and next, the action must be shared.
No parent, when putting forward one who will stand in his stead to entrust the family responsibility, wishes to set up as his stand-in one who is inferior to himself. Why? Because there is absolutely no parent who thinks his child must not be better than the parent. And seen even centering upon a nation, it is likewise the same. The sovereign of that nation must be a sovereign who hopes that a stand-in greater than himself will come forth. Whether in a family or in a nation, whoever it may be, one must hope that a successor will come forth who is finer than oneself and furnished with everything more than oneself. This is a requisite condition close to the eternal, transcending the changes of history.
That the child be better than the parent is the demand of the family. It is the same with a people. Nevertheless, the sovereigns until now have not been so. Until now, when it was said there was a person able to surpass oneself, again and again they cut off his head. Such a miserable history has continued down.
Then upon what foundation will God carry out the history of the providence?
Can He depart the providence centering upon the ground of a nation? He cannot do so. For this reason, to seek one family able to depart the providence, God has, centering upon the reverse side of history, cultivated the foundation of the providence until now. And so God sought a nation able to accord with that family, and a person of responsibility able to stand in the stead of that nation. He has come demanding such a one who stands in the stead.
If it is a nation, God desires a person, centering upon the nation, able to bring it into accord with the purpose God set up and with God’s Will. Even a person of responsibility whom God set up, God desires to be a person able to set up a person of responsibility who, using himself as fertilizer, can leap higher than himself.
But when we examine the history of the world that has continued down until now, we can know that nation after nation has gone on striking and seizing each other. This does not fundamentally accord with the direction the Will aims at. For this reason Heaven has, centering upon one family, broadened the ground of the environment to set the world in order. In this process, it set up a new tradition.
Then what is that tradition?
It is the gathering out of a throng able to be loyal for the sake of the world, become one for the sake of the world, live for the sake of the world, and fight for the sake of the world. In that respect, the Christianity that has cultivated its ground on the reverse side of history until now became the root of this tradition.
Then how must Christianity itself be today?
It must transcend denomination. This is to say that one must not try to absorb everything centering upon one’s own denomination. That the clericalists of today, bound to the framework of their denomination, have made religion chronic cannot but be a great tragedy. God does not leave this alone but strikes it. Why does He strike it? Because He cannot set up the one who stands in God’s stead in such a place. To what point has the ground extended that God has labored through the course of history until now? We cannot deny the fact that He has come, centering upon the individual and taking the family as the standard.
The Right Attitude: The One Who Came First Must Have
Then what is the work the Unification Church must do today?
The several billion people of humankind living upon the earth today all hold thoughts, each in their own way. Since each one’s thoughts differ, their wills differ, and their purposes differ. For this reason, the Unification Church must carry out an integrating movement that integrates the purposes. This is to say that it must lay a bridge of the tie through a mainstream thought.
Today left and right are fighting, each saying its own is right. We are placed in such an age-situation, in which we must ourselves decide upon one side or the other of these two forked paths. There cannot be two views. When one says he will go both paths, one can never escape suffering. Even if there are two, one must without fail decide upon one and then decide upon the other. When there are two, an order must without fail be decided here. One cannot do the two at once. Then which must one do first and which later? Or the problem arises of which to take and which to cast away.
Seen in the case of today’s world, when God moves all the situations of the world, which does He touch first, and which does He touch next?
Next, which does He take, and which does He cast away? Such problems must be decided. One must cast away one or must first receive what is right; one must first receive love as well and must first take counsel over everything. Then how must the one who was faced first act? When one stands in a position of saying that another must not receive more than oneself, one comes to ruin.
If the United States, representing the democratic world today, having been faced first before God, says that no other nation must receive more love than it has received, it comes to ruin. Is it not so that the world will be set in order the sooner if there is a way for another nation to be able to receive more love than that? But today the United States is failing to set the world in order.
So a nation must come forth that is closer to Heaven than the United States and able to be connected with Heaven in content more than the United States. Then, from such a position, how must the United States act hereafter? Because the United States, though it shoulders a worldwide responsibility, is in a position of failing to fulfill it, when a person of responsibility able to carry out that responsibility comes forth and sets that responsibility in order, it must stand in a position able to be for the sake of him. Otherwise it comes to ruin. It is the same with communism. Because it did not grow up in that way, it is bound to come to ruin.
To Become a Worldwide Center, One Must Overcome Worldwide Trials and Suffering
From this viewpoint, what one who stands in the stead must we become?
Though you yourselves are not even well-favored, have no career of any kind, and possess nothing, your minds hope for the highest standard.
Which one who stands in the stead will you become?
You must become one who stands in the stead, able to bear responsibility for the household, but further, you must become the representative of the nation, the representative of the world. To do so, you yourself must have a worldwide standard.
To have this worldwide standard, one must be close to the absolute standard. Yet without first passing through the center of the family, one cannot pass through the center of the people. And without passing through the center of the people, one cannot pass through the center of the nation, and without passing through the center of the nation, there is no way to advance to the center of the world. You must know this fact.
Because the direction of history is so arranged today, countless people wish, centering upon themselves, to become the sovereign of their nation and wish to become a person of responsibility. Further, they wish to become a leader of the world. But such a person must first cross over the gate of the family, cross over the gate of the clan, cross over the ridge of the people, and cross over the ridge of the nation and the world. Only then can one be called worldwide. This worldwide means being first. Without becoming first, it will not do.
In receiving glory, they will love being first, but in receiving the persecution, trial, and suffering that are opposite to it, most people dislike it. Such a person cannot become the center of a worldwide family. To become the center of a worldwide family, one must be able to overcome all worldwide trials and suffering. In the place of public righteousness, even in an environment where all cannot but collapse, one must be able to rise of oneself, overcome everything, and break through. If one is to become nothing less than the center of a worldwide family, one must be able to do so.
In all the nations of the world today, there are patriots, each in that nation’s own way. A patriot is not a person who merely goes about visiting his nation’s scenic spots, enjoying elegant pastimes, and touring about. In the course of that patriot’s struggle, there is the content of having passed through the parting-ways of blood.
In other words, the more a person has gathered many achievements of victory at the crossroads of life and death, the more he is a great historic victor and a patriot who sets up the tradition of that nation.
Everyone wishes to have a fine son. Then, to raise him into a fine person, how must one educate him? Some people may say that, since there are many schools from kindergarten to university, it is enough to educate him there. But education must be done throughout life. Devotion must be offered. When a parent entrusts the household to a child raised with devotion—that is, when setting him up as the one who stands in his stead—it is customary to set him up as the one who stands in the stead by making him one with the parent’s mind and having him follow the parent’s tie.
Then how has God carried out the providence to do such a worldwide responsibility?
God, even though human beings fell, is not a God who wishes these human beings to receive the retribution of the fall. God wishes, in the stead of what human beings ought to receive as retribution, to strip away the taint of the fall. In stripping away the taint, it cannot be done just so. Because human beings cannot bear responsibility, God bears responsibility.
Seen from this point, God, who must set this whole history in order and bear responsibility for the world, faces the individual, yet the stage of that fight is not individual but world-historic. That fight is world-historic. Without passing through such a fight, one cannot find a world-historic individual. Seen from this point, our individual selves may be a slight being possessing no value of any kind, but when we think of the achievement of God’s labor and the course of His labor, we must become a historic fruit.
Remember That You Are Laying a Burden of the Heart upon God
Because human beings fell, they failed to become a figure of sons in whom God could rejoice and became a figure over whom He grieves. They were born in the position of a sorrowful and miserable orphan.
How great must be the grief and distress of God, who must give these human beings a desire for a happiness in which they can rejoice, revive them, and advance them up to that standard?
Even to be born in a place where one can rejoice and to walk that path would be difficult, yet can you indeed have the heart of God, who must, facing human beings born in an utterly grievous and sorrowful place, drag them along while feeling sorrow to set up the highest foundation of joy? At present that is close to impossible. It cannot be done. How miserable must God be, who carries out the providence from such a position?
From this viewpoint, the burden of the heart that God has shouldered for the sake of just one of you cannot be repaid by giving anything. You are bearing such a debt. God wishes to forget and not to be concerned with such a debt, but Satan comes, making a condition of it.
Even though God wishes to forget, Satan says, “Has not so-and-so incurred such a debt?” Even though God is in a sorrowful place, because Satan thus confronts Him, He has become even more sorrowful, having to receive trial and suffering once again.
From such a position, God is seeking the one who stands in His stead.
So how pitiable a God is this?
Since, unless He sets up the one who stands in His stead from among such people, God cannot accomplish the Will, consider how miserable and unhappy a God this is. His heart is to cross over such a position quickly, worldwide, and to escape such a place is without limit, but you must know the circumstances of God, who cannot do so. God has no sin apart from that of having become the parent of human beings.
Standing in such a miserable position, God came seeking the one who stands in His stead. It was so in Adam’s family, so in Noah’s family, so in Abraham’s family. Moreover, of the historic people of Israel too, He hoped that they would become one victorious people.
But how great must have been the grief of God, who, far from a victorious people, could not find even a victorious individual?
Upon the ground of four thousand years of history’s labor, He toiled to seek one individual representative, family representative, national representative, worldwide representative able to be such but did not find one. For this reason, He sent one Son able to represent this whole and to stand in the stead of the peoples of the world.
Nevertheless, they seized and killed this one. That becomes the result of having violated all things historic before the heart of the Father, who had labored. In other words, it becomes that the world of sin struck the one who came as the representative of the family, the representative of the nation, the representative of the world.
For this reason, one must receive the price of individual sin, must receive the price of family sin, must receive the price of national and people’s sin, and must receive the price of worldwide sin. And so Israel, where Jesus came and went—that nation, which from the providential position was the chosen people—passed through a miserable course in history and became an orphan and a driven wretch. Otherwise, the conclusion would come out that God does not exist.
The Unification Members, Who Bear the Responsibility to Comfort God
Then what have you come here to do?
You are not people who came merely to pass by. You must know that you are a throng gathered to determine, staking your lives, that here you will without fail decide upon one thing to do and stand as the one who stands in the stead in the field of the mission.
Since Heaven is seeking such an individual, family, and clan, the individual too must be so, the family too must be so, and the clan able to pass through the family too must be so. This clan must also leave a traditional thought before the people and the nation. Not only the people and the nation, but also moving these people and the nation, we must leave a tradition to the world. To do so, we must set up a new ideology for the nation.
The farther you are from that, the more earnest your mind must be. The farther that distance, the more you must draw in that distance and set up the central standard at this point. Because that standard has not been decided today, a grievous fact remains. Therefore, we today, the Unification believers, must know that we have the responsibility to comfort Heaven, holding a point of accord of the heart even from a far distance.
The problem here is that, before one can stand in the stead of the mission responsibility, there must be a person able to stand in the stead of the responsibility of the heart. For this reason, you must not stand in a relative position, but, if it is the Unification Church, you must stand in the subjective position representing the Unification Church. From that central place where history has flowed forth, once look up above and look down ahead. Is the place in which you stand indeed a place able to criticize anything? It is not. That place is a place able to be criticized forever. Since you said you would bear responsibility, you must consider it to be a place able to bear responsibility forever. It is that grave a place.
You must be able to go off yourselves. You must not become a burden to anyone.
Even if it should mean death, you must not become a burden. You must not become a burden even in the family. This is to say that you must resurrect the family. Without a form of individual and family able to be such coming forth, even if a person of responsibility able to stand in the stead of the people and the nation comes forth, it comes to ruin again. It was not that God, having no ability, suffered for six thousand years until now. What is the problem? We must know that history was turned upside down because man failed to set up achievements before God and make a stepping-stone from a relative position.
Here, however much a person of responsibility fulfills responsibility, before an environmental, object-partner substance able to accord with that responsibility is decided and made firm, that one who stands in the stead becomes pitiable. God too is pitiable because there is no object-partner able to be such.
When you go forth centering upon yourselves, you must not incur debt before the members of the Unification Church, if members. You must absolutely not incur debt. If it is your family, you must resolve absolutely not to incur debt before the family. Such a thought must be thoroughgoing.
If it is a clan, if it is the Kim clan, if it is the Park clan, only when each stands in a place of laying debt upon others in the place of facing the Will can God too be at ease. Such a clan must come forth.
You must not become a third-party living with the Will set far off. The sons and daughters that a parent desires are children who ache in their breast even from merely reading the parent’s expression when the parent sheds tears. Before that environmental standard, when one comes to know the parent’s worry as one’s own worry, if the parent is in a position of grieving, the child too cannot but grieve.
That is the tie of the heart in the parent-child relationship. So when God grieves, we who are in the position of God’s children cannot but grieve. Without standing in such a position, one absolutely cannot become one who stands in the stead.
Unless the history of the one who stands in the stead becomes a sorrowful history, one does not become a person able to stand in the stead of history.
Reflect on How Much You Have Been Loyal as One Who Stands in the Stead of the Will
You yourselves who face the Will and the Teacher must have an accord of the heart. However ill-favored, parent and child must be directly connected, and if they are not, one is neither a parent nor a child. A filial child is not a person who, wagging his tail only over things beneficial before the parent, merely receives love.
What is a filial child?
A filial child is a person who, to bear responsibility in the parent’s stead for the parent’s sorrow, seeks the difficult place and, by fulfilling responsibility, can bring joy to the parent.
If the parent does work amounting to ten and the child strives to the amount of fifteen, the parent will feel joy corresponding to five. A filial child is a person who strives while thinking of how he can supplement such a field and offer it for the sake of the parent.
In the church too, when there is difficulty in the church, you must consider that difficulty to be the difficulty of your household. If your sons and daughters died, you would be greatly alarmed.
Likewise, when there is some difficulty in the church, you must step forward as if it were a household affair. And in the nation too, you must stand in the position of a person of responsibility able to decide the destiny of the nation.
When the nation is placed in a position of whether it dies or lives, a person for whom whether his sons and daughters die or live becomes the problem cannot become the person of responsibility of that nation. You must know that.
A person who, still unable to cross that boundary line, groans and goes without deciding there, cannot become a person of responsibility. For this reason, to become the representative in that family, one must be able to bear responsibility for all the difficulties of that family. This is not a matter of sharing out the difficult work; it is the person able to say he will bear responsibility for the whole who can bear the responsibility of the whole.
The Unification Church, too, has the problem of whether it appears quickly before the world decides according to how much it fulfills such a historic responsibility. Seen from this viewpoint, some of you may have known the Will for several years or more than ten years, but the point is, from that day, how much loyalty have I offered, and how much hardship have I undergone as one who stands in the stead for the sake of the Will? We must look back once more upon whether we are truly leading a grave life for the sake of the Will and following the Will.
The Person of Responsibility Has It Harder
Before crossing the individual standard, one does not cross over the family standard. This you too will know well. And without crossing the family standard, one cannot cross the clan standard.
If you look, there are people who, having become a person of responsibility, throw out every fit of temper and say everything they wish to say, leading a self-centered life. Living in that way, one cannot but come to ruin. If God had been so, the world would all have come to ruin.
A person of responsibility cannot say everything he wishes to say. Even if he wishes to become angry, he cannot become angry carelessly. Even if he did become angry, if he did so out of national sorrow or from a position embracing the sorrow of the clan and the family, it is not a sin.
If, centering upon himself, he says, “Is this cursed nation trying to come to ruin, that it acts so!” he comes to cut off his head.
Seen even in the case of a nation, when a mistaken thing is corrected, the law of that nation must judge by the principle of “It is thus.” Only when the one who judges judges centering upon such a standard does it become a normal judgment.
When one comes to be judged before a person who holds such a standard, the one who receives it too complies without complaint. Otherwise he complains. So the place of one who stands in the stead is not easy.
If some person of responsibility works the people under him hard while he himself is in a comfortable place, that person of responsibility is a fraud. Such a person is not a person of responsibility. From this viewpoint, you must discover in yourselves the position of the one who stands in the stead that Heaven demands hereafter.
When you do, a standard will come out of how the one who stands in the stead must be hereafter in the Unification Church. And, centering upon a family, if it is a family, when we ask what sort of family it must be, a standard will come out of the kind of family it must be. And a standard will come out of how the one who stands in the stead of a clan, if a clan, a people, if a people, a nation, if a nation, must be.
Seen from this viewpoint, until now there has been no one who stands in God’s stead in the world, none in the nation, none among the people, none in the clan, none in the family. Because such a world has remained until now, that which came forth to set this in order once more and rally it is the Unification Church.
Become a Substance That Sets Up the Tradition of the New Age
You, too, do not know the Unification Church well, do you?
Can you know it merely by sitting about, saying it has been only a few days since you entered? The person who says, “I must go the path the Unification Church has passed through,” is the true Unification member. Even when centering upon a nation, only one who becomes such a person is a patriot.
One must say, “I too must walk the path the Unification Church has fought.”
Without inheriting the history, one does not become a person of responsibility of the age. A person who does not know how to inherit that confidently and to charge in full against the enemy’s position cannot set up a tradition in the future.
Only by becoming one person of responsibility able to break through the environment to cope with the nation’s emergency can one set up a new tradition of the future. Only when, in a difficult time, one bears the history of the past, bears responsibility for the present, fights, and determines victory, is the tradition of a new age set up, crossing over the emergency age.
Today the Republic of Korea is placed in an emergency. Then what must the Unification Church do for the sake of such a Republic of Korea? What tradition will it set up in the future? Meeting such an emergency age, we must step forward and fight. In any case, North and South must collide, and this cannot be done by human strength alone. Even by rallying some worldwide power, it must be settled. Then, at the present point when an emergency has drawn near before our eyes, must we go by avoiding it? By no means. If one goes by avoiding it, one comes to ruin. Going by avoiding it, one is left with work still to be done, with weary steps.
How does one cultivate the subjective ability to receive and digest the enemy as an enemy? One does it by winning in the fight with the enemy, crossing over this ridge that confronts reality, and setting up a new victorious tradition in an age of peace. Who must set up such a tradition? This cannot but be a problem for those who bear responsibility for the present Republic of Korea.
From this viewpoint, what does the Unification Church intend to do?
At this present point, it must become the ground needed by our people on the ideological side. And not only ideology; it must furnish here an active stance and furnish the spirit able to struggle. In this way, our Unification Church believers are a throng that has emerged as the substance that sets up the tradition in the new historic age.
The Unification of Religion and the Spiritual World
For this reason, we must unify the denominations. In unifying the denominations, without the ability to discern the well-done from the ill-done, one cannot unify.
One must not claim unification blindly. This is to say that one must have content able to unify. And one must unify thought. Yet without unifying, one cannot unify thought. In that sense, you must know that the Unification Church came forth raising the banner of a world-historic responsibility. And so it intends to unify the churches.
In unifying the churches, the spiritual world cooperates. This fact all who come to the Unification Church will know. Do you know it, or do you not? Do you know, or do you not know, that the spiritual world is cooperating with the Unification Church? How great must the spiritual world be?
How many spirit individuals will become our side?
Perhaps some 3.2 billion? All the people who have come and gone upon the earth until now hang in the spiritual world. Whether hung upside down or hung sideways, however they are hung, they are all hung in the spiritual world. They are all arranged to cooperate with the Unification Church hereafter. Even though they say they will cooperate, the worry is that they are not being made to take part. So the spiritual world is now furious. Do you know such content?
In the spiritual world, there are spirit individuals who believed in Buddhism, spirit individuals who believed in Confucianism, spirit individuals who believed in Islam (회회교)—spirit individuals who believed in every religion—all joined. Such throngs are arranged to cooperate. A fortune of unification is arising in the spiritual world. When this happens, a fortune of unification comes to the earth as well, however much one may dislike it.
Winter passes and spring is arranged to come; can one, saying spring must not come and let us defend against spring, block the coming spring? Even if one defends against it during winter, it will not do. Spring is arranged to come flying from elsewhere. Within oneself, one cannot resolve it. To resolve it, one must do so not from within oneself but from elsewhere. Though the Unification Church claims it will unify, the plan of that unification is not within itself but elsewhere. That elsewhere is precisely the spiritual world.
Unification must without fail be achieved. This is to say that we will unify Christianity. Does it seem it will be unified, or does it not? “It will.” Do you think it will, being as you are? Those who think unification will happen, raise your hands. To do so, we must all become ones who stand in the stead. The problem is there. When you enter a family, you must become the one who stands in the stead of the family. This is to say, enter that family and become a family stand-in able to represent the whole of the family. And so it must become a traditional family such that anyone in the world can say, “I too must have such a family.” It must become a most representative family of the world that all people revere.
From this viewpoint, the Blessing of the Unification Church can truly be said to be necessary. Hereafter we must draw even the Reds into the ranks of the Blessing. Then, saying the spiritual world will unify things for us, will it do merely to look on, sitting idly, thinking, “Let us just watch the rite and eat the rice cake”? You must know that if you eat the rice cake wrongly, you get a stomachache. In Korea, there are sayings of historic anecdotes and of superstitious content that follow the customs of society, and such sayings did not arise by chance, without basis.
There is a saying that one gets struck by an evil influence from watching a shaman’s rite (굿), and this saying too is a saying with reason to it. When a shaman (무당) performs a rite to drive out a spirit from a spirit-possessed person, one who watches there may come to be struck by the evil influence. A spirit flees if there is a person finer than itself, but attaches itself to one who is not—that is, one gets struck by the evil influence. Yet have you gathered here to just watch the rite and eat the rice cake? If you would be a mere onlooker, better not to attend at all. Do not be an onlooker.
Until now the Unification Church has spent itself to set up a new tradition in the new historic age. But hereafter it must accumulate achievements able to lead the Republic of Korea, if the Republic of Korea, or the world, if the world.
Then from where will it set up a new tradition able to sustain the world?
You must know that. On the ideological side, how will it set up a tradition able to sustain this world? It must set it up together with the history the Unification Church has fought until now.
In the Ranks of Unification, Everyone Is Needed
The Unification Church must take the lead and unify the denominations. In Korea, we have been reviled, and everyone calls the Unification Church a wicked place, yet even newspaper reporters say they cannot but admit that the Unification Church can create an atmosphere of the trans-denominational movement. You must know that the spiritual world is without a doubt cooperating from behind.
Then who will shoulder and go with the history of unification? Who will weave the history of the Unification Church?
Of course, the Teacher of the Unification Church will take the lead and weave it, but the Teacher alone will not do. Did God accomplish everything alone? God too cannot do it alone. So even you, unpleasant to look at, are needed. In truth, there are times when blood pours down. Well, I could have shut the door and lived on instant noodles with my wife, but now, thinking that I must live openly, hanging out a signboard, with foreheads pressed together…. Moreover, this so-called parent-child relationship—it is dumbfounding….
So how difficult must it be for the Teacher, who must speak through you?
Yet what is the problem? The problem is that you are told to become one centering upon one person, the Unification Church’s Teacher Moon. That is what is strange. But it is so arranged. Then are you so arranged? You must know that. The Teacher teaches the content by which it can be so.
When such things are taught, one says, “Indeed it is so! It is the common truth of all people!” When even a patriot who loves his nation comes to say he cannot but love the world beyond the nation and resolves to become a person who goes toward the world, even casting aside the nation, a new history comes to be woven.
If you hold a thought centering upon your view of life, you must be able to say that it is happier to hold this thought even casting aside such a thought. Only then does a new shift of purpose break out from there. Together with this shift of purpose, a person who bore responsibility as an individual stand-in can rise into the field of responsibility of a family stand-in. Without such a shift, one cannot change the domain of the one who stands in the stead into a larger stage. You must know that the broader the field of the one who stands in the stead, the greater the trial and suffering there. This is absolute in the fallen world.
The path of indemnity is the path of the cross. So, passing through the age of individual responsibility, one must tread the age of family responsibility. To become one who stands in the stead, one must cross over doing such indemnity. In going, bearing responsibility for the family and bearing responsibility for the church, there is a double cross. It is a cross that cannot be cast off. When bearing individual responsibility, it is enough to come and go from the church, but when one becomes the person of responsibility of the church, the mission as a person of responsibility who must furnish the four directions grows ever heavier.
From this position, a person of responsibility is not a happy person. The fallen human beings who, under the pretext of being individuals of responsibility until now, broadened the foundation of the outer, fleshly happiness of their bodies, may have been well off, but you must know that a person of responsibility who is in a position of settling a miserable fight and paying the price is utterly miserable. Why is that? Because, since God has borne such responsibility, to stand in the position of the one who stands in God’s stead, one cannot but stand in such a place.
So the Unification Church too must go such a path. Now this world is a world that must perish. In any case, this world must be cut off.
Set Up a Tradition Able to Make You Ones Who Stand in the Stead
Now, colliding with this world and pushing forward, one must without fail set up a new historic tradition. For this reason, the Unification Church fights in this way.
This is not a tradition of the Unification Church alone. In other words, it is not a tradition of the present Unification Church alone. It is to set up a new tradition of the future that the Unification Church has fought until now.
In doing that work, one will say, why do it in a complicated and clamorous way; can it not be done quietly and softly? Doing it quietly and softly will not do. One must wail aloud and go forth offering every loyalty. So the path we go is not arranged so that it can be done softly and stealthily.
When one hears the words of the Unification Church Principle and resolves to come out to the church, a test without fail follows. Or when one has promised to go and hear the words of the Principle, without fail some accident arises at home, or some affair breaks out again and again. You will have had such an experience.
Especially the witnessing individuals of responsibility will have felt it well. This is a formula without error. Why is it so? Because when, from an individual environment, one tries to rise higher, Satan presses one down from the top. This is not something the Teacher made up and is saying.
We must settle our sin. Because the Unification Church must set up a new historic tradition—because it is in a position of setting up the tradition of tomorrow—without the condition able to set up this tradition, that is, without the standard of having fought and won, one does not achieve the foundation of tomorrow’s victory.
Because Satan knows that such a mission is in the Unification Church, he has without fail arranged to strike it. But Heaven merely leaves it and watches. Even at the fall, He merely left it and watched, did He not? Because the fall came about with Satan as its origin, man must, without fail, win over Satan and settle it. This is why following the path of the Will of the Unification Church is difficult. Jesus too said to the women of Jerusalem who followed him, “Weep not for me, but weep for the sons and daughters of Jerusalem.” The meaning is: if I go bearing all the trial and suffering of the sons and daughters of Jerusalem, you too cannot but bear this cross. Otherwise, you cannot become the victor of tomorrow. So, at the present standard, do not look upon me and weep.
Then what must the Unification Church do?
It must become the one who stands in the stead of tomorrow. To become the one who stands in the stead of tomorrow, it must set up a tradition from this hour today. This is to say, set up a tradition able to pass judgment upon the world. In setting up this tradition, set it up more boldly than anyone in the world. You must know that this is the standard Heaven demands.
There are many newcomers here. Newcomers, raise your hands. Those who have come to the headquarters church for the first time, raise your hands too. You must know these things well. A new tradition must be set up in a grave place. The Unification Church has such a mission. However it may be with you, the Teacher is going forth, staking his life.
Whatever tribulation befalls before that path, it cannot become a condition of hindrance in going the path of Heaven. This only becomes material by which the Teacher, holding hostility, smashes the reverse side of the enemy; and because it does not become a hindrance before the path I go, I have until now conveyed the Will with the conviction that I cannot stand in a place of hesitation.
For this reason, you too must follow such a Teacher. Must you go, or must you not go? “We must go.” Since you have crossed over the ridge able to follow the Teacher, now you must go, becoming a fence for this Teacher.
The Will by Which God Gave the Unification Church Trial
What does the Unification Church intend to do?
To become ones who stand in the stead. To become ones who stand in the stead able to bear responsibility for everything, in this people, or in religion if religion. But do not do it by scheme and method. In the inner core, one does it from an earnest position, and on the outer side, one does it according to reason, as the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter turn. A person standing in the position of a person of responsibility must absolutely not do it by scheme and method. The more one uses a scheme and method, the more that a church’s person of responsibility comes to fail to fulfill responsibility.
At such a time, if one bears responsibility for the church more than that person of responsibility, then whatever strategy one deploys, one is not caught. At that time, whatever scheme and method that person uses, he is not caught. Here, even Satan cannot accuse.
Because he knew such a principle, the Teacher has until now prayed concerning the established churches. He has prayed a prayer no one in the Unification Church knows. When one has such a thing, it is all right to use a scheme and method.
Otherwise, one must not use schemes and methods. And that scheme and method must be by revelation. Even if it is a revelation, what is not truth does not remain as tradition. What does not remain as tradition comes to be judged together with history? Those who become individuals of responsibility of the church and witness in the provinces must know this well.
And so, when facing the clan from the national standard, one may use a scheme and method. Because if the nation’s person of responsibility does not do so, the clan comes to be punished. Do you understand? From whatever position, however much one is made to cast it off, the person of responsibility of that nation cannot cast it off. For this reason, even though someone like Kim Il-sung acts as he does, God merely leaves it and watches. There must be in the Republic of Korea a standard able to appeal against that. Without making such a national standard, one cannot strike in. When there comes to be no person able to be such, however savage Satan may be, God cannot handle it.
If the countless Christian churches and the religions of the world come today to be unable to unify and end confusion, the responsibility for that is ours, the Unification Church’s. Therefore, God must cooperate from one thing to everything, so that the Unification Church becomes one able to be regarded as absolute in this nation at least. So the Teacher’s strategy is to make the second preparation, centering upon a few people, even if few rather than many. First, it makes the second preparation.
To unify, the Unification believers must go any path. You must set up the ground of the tradition to be set up in the future, able to unify the Christianity of the world. You are the masters of the world. If God, looking upon you now, says to go, you must go. How many people can indeed do so?
Since Christianity has woven a history of martyrdom, you must become one able to set up a new tradition beyond that.
Did the Teacher not say such words?
He has already done it all. The Teacher has done all the work on no less than the history of Christianity. The Teacher has fought, passing through the three eras. He has fought, centering upon the nation, passing through the three eras. This is to say that he possesses achievements able to command boldly before you. The Teacher has set up such achievements.
If that had been for the sake of present desire, he would have had to be punished. But because he strongly pressed forward and fought for the sake of the future tradition, by that sacrifice he will by no means come to ruin in the future. Upon that ground, the more such things break out, the firmer the future world becomes.
At this present point, in such a situation, you must know that there is Heaven’s Will that the trial toward the Unification Church must be strengthened all the more. Why is that? It is to set you up in the position of a national one who stands in the stead, able to receive blessing in the new historic age.
For this reason, the Unification Church, as the representative before the people, must fulfill the national responsibility God desires. Do you understand? “Yes.” Do the women understand too? “Yes.”
The Unification Church must unify the denominations. Further, in such an age of confusion, it must unify religion. Is the signboard not splendid? The signboard is splendid, but it will not do if there is no content. It will not do if there is no content. Before hanging out the signboard, one must first furnish the content. In our Unification Church, that content must be propagated. Does the Teacher gather people together to boast of myself and boast of my wife? Does it do for me to boast of myself alone? What must I boast of?
What must a parent boast of?
What must one boast of? A parent unable to boast of his children is arranged to come to ruin. He comes to ruin. Then, when crippled sons and daughters come calling mother and father, can the parent boast of those sons and daughters? He lives holding them close lest others see. God has spent Himself amid such circumstances until now. So how much has God labored?
Tradition Is Inherited by the Mainstream
You must know that there God passed through the course of history receiving Satan’s mockery, “You bore your children well, did you not?” When a fight comes upon our throng of unification, able to trample down and cover over what Satan has trodden through, what will you do? You must have the resolve to grasp it well, step forward gladly, and dispose of it with my hand. You are Unification believers who must prepare for such a fierce battle.
Some people are saying, “In the 1950s or the 1960s I did thus….” When someone asks such a one, “So then you did it because you liked it, but how is it now?” and he comes to say, “Well…,” would that feel good?
The one who has newly entered the Unification Church must know that. To have the tradition of the Unification Church inherited intact, the members who entered earlier must do well. It is not that there is no stage on which you can develop just because you entered later. The later you entered, the farther you are from the original tradition and mainstream thought, and so you can receive and carry forward that original tradition and mainstream thought. Do you understand?
You will know the words “mainstream” and "non-mainstream." To liken it to a tree, a tree has a trunk and branches. To become the main trunk, must you become a side branch, or must you become the vertical stem? The vertical stem can always receive love from the root. But if the vertical stem grows like a branch, what must be done? That tree must be cut off. It must be purged.
Satan drove things on precisely to keep this center (the vertical stem) from growing, and Heaven fought with Satan to make it grow. Then where does the decision of this fight break out? It breaks out when this baton called the mainstream is taken over. Without deciding that fight, one cannot be regarded as having made progress and cannot be said to have developed.
However much one fights there, if one does not decide victory, one cannot be said to have made progress in that fight. One must just go around again. Since even fighting brings no end, one must turn around again a full 180 degrees. Because the center cannot be two and is eternally one, tradition is inherited by that mainstream.
For this reason, who is the patriot of the Republic of Korea?
There are various patriots. There is General Yi Sun-sin, and there is another and another. Then who will be the true patriot of the Republic of Korea? That is not known. It depends on how that nation will turn out. Without a mainstream thought, where to go is vague.
Will it do merely to fight like General Yi Sun-sin?
When we ask whether there is a true patriot able to instill a patriotic spirit in that nation, there is none. They are all people who merely come and go, people who fail to be the mainstream. Even the United States, if the United States, fails to be the mainstream. Or however great a power among the nations of the world, all fail to be the mainstream.
God’s Love Is the Source of the Mainstream Thought
That they fail to possess the mainstream thought is the same for all. Even the Unification member fails to possess it. Then who possesses it? Apart from the Teacher, there is no one who possesses it. Seen thus, we can know that the Unification Principle fits here.
The Confucian thought of the East, the thought of Plato, and Christian thought too are all arranged to be connected through it. Not by a hegemonism of force, but centering upon the cultural sphere, a unified thought comes to unfold. History is so arranged. Then what will that absolute mainstream thought be? The center of unification is the mainstream thought. Centering upon it, Christianity has historically become, in name and in reality, a worldwide religion.
From where did the first traditional mainstream thought begin?
It began with Father and Mother. Is it not so? Would it not be so? The ideal world that the nation and the world desire all began with this family. Because this ideological principle was spread out horizontally, the world unfolds. Then from where did the parents’ mainstream thought begin? This began from God. Then from what of God’s must it begin? It must begin from God’s love.
Such love is good at night, good in the daytime, good while sleeping, good in dreams, and good even while fleeing. This is precisely the key to happiness. It is something all the myriad people of the world, past, present, and future, can like, something concerning which the word revolution cannot come out. Only so can it become a traditional mainstream thought. Can one make a revolution against love?
If, saying that men are excellent, one did away with women and let only men live, what would happen?
Does it perish, or does it not? It will not last a hundred years. And if one lets only women live in one house, does it perish, or does it not? The women here—where is a woman’s happiness? Do you not know? Then the men—where is a man’s happiness? “It is the family.” The family? It is from a woman. For a man, it is from a woman. Some women here, when such words are spoken, shudder at the thought of men, do they not? Such a person is so because she met the wrong man. (laughter)
So the ghost of one who lived alone in the world and died is called a monggal ghost (몽달귀신). Then is this monggal ghost well off or not? Is it a monggal ghost from being all balled up together? Because it became alone, it is called a monggal ghost.
Why did God create human beings?
He created them not to look at faces. He created human beings to set up the law of love. God’s love is the absolute good. What is connected, centering upon the true cord of love, is the true family, the true nation, and the true world. Understood, it is simple.
The Unification Church does not seek to cultivate any worldwide foundation of authority.
The doctrine of the Unification Church has unraveled the sixty-six books of the Holy Scriptures and drawn its conclusion in the thing called the family. As long as humankind remains, they cannot but accept the thought of the Unification Church. Because it has furnished more concrete content than the thought put forward by any being, than any content, set up the form of an ideal family upon a ground of factual basis, grounded on historic verification, this thought can conquer the world. It conquers this world, centering upon God’s love. That is a fact without error.
Today’s teenagers are becoming a problem; why has it become so?
Because they left the bosom of the parents’ love. Since they were turned upside down from the family, from the womb, there is nothing to say of the world. Then, centering upon this teenage problem today, who will set the order straight? The Unification Church must do it. Now, to resolve this teenage problem with money, how much must be given? Attending university expenses upward of hundreds of thousands of won.
If the Teacher were to receive money as the price for having provided education beyond university, the Unification Church would become rich. In that case, it would become the result of receiving one’s life by giving money.
The Christians and Buddhists of the past could not receive such a thought even by giving their lives, but the Unification members have received such a grace, so you must repay that grace.
Moreover, to receive a grace, one must prepare at least a wrapping cloth. Is there anyone who goes to be married wearing ragged clothes? When one is now to inherit a treasure jar, can one go and inherit it wearing a skirt like a straw mat or a sackcloth bag? That is discourtesy. One must prepare.
Unificationism (the Mainstream Thought of the Unification Church) Is Precisely Heart-ism
Though the appearance is so, the time without fail comes. When that time comes, one must go having prepared to give out to the many people the thing one has offered devotion to and to embrace them.
Such a thought is the mainstream thought of the Unification Church. The place that does such work is precisely the Unification Church. If only this is done, religion is unified even if one says it must not be unified. And once religion is unified, the nation too can be unified.
What does the Unification Church intend to do?
To unify thought. Now the currents of the world are confused, each claiming its own is right, saying communism is right, saying democracy is right.
For example, to a person who does not know whether it is a man or a woman, even if you say a woman is a man, he cannot help but believe it is a man. A person who does not know a manly man cannot distinguish a woman and a man well. Because you know a man, you know how to distinguish a man.
From this point, one must be able to know, “A man is what is shaped like this.” One must be able to know clearly that a man is decided from a position transcending historicity—that is, that because it was thus in the past, it is a man, and because it will be thus in the future, it is a man. That the past and today differ and the future can differ in this way means the decision was mistaken.
In this respect, the truth of the Unification Church has content able to discern precisely, “The left is thus and the right is thus; you are a man and I am a woman.” The Unification Church, as the religion representing Heaven, intends, holding a thought representing this world, to set right the scattered thought. This is precisely Unificationism.
The Teacher dislikes this word “-ism.” An “-ism” plays the role of a staff. To cross a bridge, a staff is needed. If, in crossing a bridge, it is said that the bridge will collapse if two go, the two will fight to cross first. When they say, Let us cross by agreement, they will fight again over who will cross first.
If crossing the bridge first would without a doubt bring a windfall, they would surely make such a fight. It is precisely the work of the Unification Church to carry out the providence to make this bridge well crossed.
Have you heard the term son-ism?
Is there such a term that the parent must stand in the position of son-ism and the son must stand in the position of son-ism and become one? That “-ism” does not pass current within the sphere of family-ism.
Family-ism is needed because one must combine families and form a nation. This family-ism is absorbed before nation-ism. And nation-ism is absorbed before world-ism, and world-ism is absorbed before Cosmos-ism (천주주의), and again Cosmos-ism is absorbed before heart-ism (심정주의). From that viewpoint, what “-ism” is the Unification Church today? What “-ism”? “It is heart-ism.” The “-ism” of the Unification Church is heart-ism.
When one says Cosmos-ism, in the word 천주 (cheonju), what character “ju” is that “ju”? The point is, why of all things is the character 宙 (“ju,” meaning house or dwelling) used in the word Cosmos-ism? One could say 天大主義 (cheondae-juui) or 天王主義 (cheonwang-juui), or 天主主義 (cheonju-juui, with 主 “lord”), but why was the character 宙 (house) used in this word cheonju? It signifies a house, a family. What character “ju,” you say? “It is the character 宙, ‘house.’”
Why use the character 宙, “house”?
It is because it came out of the house of Heaven. So, on the day the Blessed Families of the Unification Church fall from this standard, it is hell—they go to hell.
The Establishment of the Blessing and the Tradition
If one is to receive the Blessing of the Unification Church and then separate, for what did one receive the Blessing?
They do not know the misery they will come to undergo hereafter when things go wrong after receiving the Blessing. They do not know such a thing. If one does wrong, one is caught by the law.
Even if one made a contract not knowing its content, that contract is established. But the Teacher taught them everything. And the Teacher, discerning their front and back, left and right, having them question and answer with each other, then gave the Blessing. Because he did so, they cannot budge in the slightest.
If one does wrong here, even one’s ancestors of more than seventy generations get caught up in it. People do not know that the Blessing is such an enormous and fearful thing. So from where is the Unification Church? From Cosmos-ism.
Not knowing such things, some people say, “Oh my, that so-called ideal partner is an ideal partner only if the hearts match! Frankly, I dislike such a partner!”
Everyone, can that be?
One absolutely cannot say so. For this reason, you must know that in the Blessed Families of the Unification Church, there are utterly splendid families, and there are utterly ill-turned-out families too. Do not lead another person into a pit.
If all the clever people married only, who would marry the least favored at the bottom? Must such people all then die?
Is there a saying that a one-eyed woman cannot be married off? Is there a law that a man with a crippled arm cannot take a wife? There is no such law in the world.
Hereafter, the excellent person must become a husband or wife with the ill-favored person. We must revere them. Such a time comes. Our world must become precisely such a world. Concerning the wife who lives with a disabled person, or such a husband, one must expect that nation’s tradition. Shouldn't such a person be comforted by their environment? Until now that has not been so, but hereafter it will surely become so.
So the Teacher’s lifelong wish is to see, once, the ugliest man in the world and the finest beauty in the world married, and that family revered and honored as the family that is the representative of all people. Before praising the high mountain, one must know how to praise the deep valley. Should it not be so?
You may think the Teacher pairs you up any which way, but that is by no means so. There are without fail merits and demerits in each. Even the Association president here does not know such things well, but the Teacher gives the Blessing knowing all such principled content. Among you there may be some who say, “Others are done thus, so why am I done thus?” but that is spoken out of not knowing. One must wait and see. Some families turn out easily, and some families turn out with difficulty.
The Greatness of the Four Position Foundation Principle That the Unification Church Discovered
From where does Cosmos-ism come?
It comes from the heart. The Unification Church likes unification, does it not?
Then must the left eye and the right eye be unified, or must they not? “They must.” To be unified, must one take off one eye and stick it onto the other? (laughter) That is not it; one must pass through three points. That is the Four Position Foundation, and the Unification Church has discovered this thing called the Four Position Foundation, which cannot be bought even with money.
When this Four Position Foundation is achieved, the purpose is achieved. When the purpose of the right eye and the left eye is achieved, the Four Position Foundation is achieved. When that happens, the cause appears and the effect appears. When cause and effect are thus achieved, the four directions are all within the sphere of this Four Position Foundation.
Then what is sin?
Sin is that the Four Position Foundation is not achieved. The Teacher taught you, did he not? Has the Four Position Foundation been achieved, or has it not? “It has not been achieved.” If one substitutes the Principle into everything and unravels it, one cannot budge in the slightest and must live and die by the Principle.
So the Teacher too cannot budge and is caught. Caught, does he come to ruin? No. Being caught and turning round and round, the more one turns, the more one develops.
In building a pagoda, no one builds it ever larger the higher it goes up. The higher one goes, the smaller it must become. Doing so, at the very top, only one remains.
Can one build more atop that one?
One cannot build anymore. A person who says he will build up higher there all comes to ruin. One must, without fail, having gone up, come down. One must go up and come down. To do so, one must firmly grasp the center.
It is likewise when a man and a woman meet and live together. It is arranged that they live holding on firmly. It is arranged that they live holding on to the real thing. A man and a woman, and then sons and daughters—thus one must achieve the Four Position Foundation. In this way, the law of heaven and earth is arranged to achieve the Four Position Foundation. Body and mind too, centering upon the Way of Heaven, must become one and achieve the Four Position Foundation.
You must become husbands and wives who inherit the tradition of the Four Position Foundation centering upon the world. A husband and wife with such a thought come to bear sons and daughters able to set this world in order. For this reason, when a person who received the Blessing in the Unification Church bears children in a place able to accord with the Teacher’s standard, those children receive the traditional thought and come forth as a different seed. Looking at those sons and daughters, one is arranged to know everything of the parents.
Let Us Fulfill Responsibility
Religion is vertical, and thought is horizontal. So the Unification Church, on the active side, possesses both of these.
And thus, in the end, what does it intend to do?
Through religion, to feel God’s heart and attend to a living God. Not only through religion but also through thought as well, to attend a living God. It is the mission of the Unification Church to make God—a God able to sing of happiness on the side of daily life and a God able to embrace His children from the position of a true parent.
Centering upon such a thought and inheriting the tradition, we must play the role of one who stands in the stead upon this earth. Seen even in the case of the family, we must do so, and seen even in the case of the clan, we must do so.
If the clan is ignorant, since we are the ones who stand in its stead, we must teach that clan, and if the nation is ignorant, we must likewise teach it. Until the day the nation remains, until the day the tradition is inherited, we must continue this mission and responsibility. This is the mission of the Unification Church.
For this reason, the Teacher who leads the Unification Church too must, without hesitating, strongly press forward and fulfill responsibility. To do so, one must endure. One must do it even by wringing tears of blood from the person one loves. Is the Teacher, then, a tyrant? Are you dumbfounded to hear such words? Or do you think it may be done so?
Seen in the case of the providential history, on this earth today, 3.6 billion of humankind are living, and each year 36 million people are dying. As many as the population of the Republic of Korea are dying. In ten years, 360 million die, and in that case nearly twice the population of the United States dies. Seen in this, how great is the loss to the Kingdom of Heaven? Because in ten years, 360 million—that is, twice the population of the United States—of human beings die, you must consider how great must have been the inner suffering of God, who wishes to shorten the Providence of Restoration, over the six thousand years He has carried out the providence.
From the position of a person of responsibility, one must be strong. You must know that there are Heaven’s circumstances that cannot but drive mercilessly from a position like the world’s foremost tyrant. It is not that He does so out of a wish to make you suffer hardship. Will you have your descendants of ten generations suffer hardship, or will you have your one generation suffer? Because there are God’s circumstances of indemnifying in one generation by making you suffer hardship, God, indifferent even to the path of death, mercilessly drives and carries out the providence. For this reason, you must know that Christianity has walked the path of martyrdom.
You must become one holding the Unification thought who, knowing receiving God’s command as a way one ought properly to go, knowing it as household law, knowing it as a traditional thought able to found the world of the future, solemnly fulfill responsibility. When, by day or by night, crossing over whatever boundary line, one goes forth offering every devotion, the world becomes our side in the not-distant future even if one says it must not become our side. You who stand in such a position must, becoming ones who stand in God’s stead, be able to love everything of the family, clan, people, nation, and world.
You must, injecting a worldwide thought into the field in which you are engaged, offer your lifetime and work within a limited environment. Only then can it be said that this work I do is a world-historic work. Therefore, one must pour out every devotion. One must shed blood and sweat and do one’s utmost.
You must think that the place where I work is the highest place of activity of my lifetime, the place that will determine the core of my life. Only when you become one able to rise there, work there, and fight, knowing it as the greatest joy to die there, can it be said that, as one holding the Unification thought, you have furnished an aspect unashamed before God.
From such a position, you must, becoming ones who stand in God’s stead, bear the responsibility. You must make a new departure with such a background.
