Former Headquarters Church, Korea
We know well that a person, from the time he is born upon this earth, holds the purpose of his life. Whether woman or man, the purpose of being born is to form a family. And we must know that the family has the responsibility of forming the people, the nation, and the world.
The True Parents, Who Come to Restore the Original Tie
When God created humanity, He created humanity centering on responsibility.
God’s responsibility and man’s responsibility are not in opposing positions. God’s fulfillment of responsibility appears upon this earth through man. And man’s responsibility must be united with God’s purpose. Therefore, if at any one time man’s purpose is not united with God’s purpose, neither God’s Will nor man’s will can be accomplished.
Hence, in the process of accomplishing the Will, the fulfillment of responsibility cannot but become an issue. In the process of setting a certain goal, planning for one year, and seeking to attain that goal, one cannot attain the one-year goal without fulfilling that responsibility day by day.
Seen centering on our course of Restoration today, this thing called Restoration is a noun that came about because of the Fall. The Fall means having dropped. It is not that one formed a relationship with the purpose, but that one dropped into a position that has no relation whatsoever to the purpose. As one can guess even from the meaning of the noun “Fall,” one can no longer discuss having formed a tie with the original purpose.
Therefore, only by having a tie with the purpose of creation can one go the road of Restoration. Then who decides that purpose? As a fallen human being, one cannot form a tie with that purpose. And God Himself alone cannot completely form that tie either. He can form the tie of the 95 percent responsibility that pertains to God, but on the standard of 100 percent, God Himself cannot completely form the tie.
Then who can form that tie?
Because that tie was cut off through the Fall of the ancestors of humanity, only the Parents of humanity can make it be formed again. Therefore, to link us human beings, who because of the Fall cannot form such a tie, with God’s purpose—that is, the purpose of creation—the Parents of humanity must come again and pioneer the road by which the tie can be formed.
The history of pioneering this road is the history of Restoration. This is the work that the successive ancestors until now—from Adam’s family through Noah, Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist, and Jesus—have carried out, and in this age it is the work that must be done, centering on the Unification Church. We must know the fact that such a tie is connected to us.
God, the True Parents, and I Must Become One
God, the True Parents, and I are beings that cannot be absent in bringing Restoration to completion. Because the human ancestors, who ought to have become the True Parents centering on God, fell to cross over the cause of the Fall, the three parties must find a point of unity. God’s Will, the True Parents’ will, and our will must be united. When one thinks of centering on Restoration, only when man reaches a position united with God’s purpose of creation is the purpose of humanity accomplished, and the Lord, who comes as the Parent of humanity, completes the standard of having restored all people.
In this way, only when parent and child become one, forming the original garden that is God’s Will, and there furnish the family tie by which parent and child can never be parted for all eternity, is God’s Will at last brought to completion. This we know through the Principle.
From this point, one can see that in the history of the providence of Restoration, countless righteous ones came forth, passing through a road of suffering, shedding blood, and being sacrificed. What they walked that road for was to connect the tie of Restoration. They paved, in one direction, the road the Parent must go.
Seen centering on your responsibility, the problem arises of whether you accomplish the Will or not, and whether you stand before the Will or not, and this is a problem you yourselves alone absolutely cannot resolve. Without being connected, above, with God at the center and with the True Parents—that is, without standing in a position where the three parties are united—one cannot complete Restoration. From the standpoint of the Principle, this is unavoidable.
The standard of the fulfillment of our responsibility that God wishes for is not limited to our individual selves. That standard must cross the individual, cross the family, and cross the tribe, people, nation, world, and, further, even that enormous realm called the Cosmos. We must know the fact that God is demanding such a mission.
Then in what position must the Lord, who comes as the Parent of humanity, stand? He, too, is not limited to the family, if it be the family, or the people, if it be the people, centered on his living. He must cross the people and cross the world and furnish a cosmic-historical tie. That one who becomes the True Parent too, because he is a child of God who attends God as Parent, must ultimately have a point of unity of heart (심정) with God, who is the Parent.
Then what kind of point is that point of unity?
It is the point that crosses over the fallen position. The position that crosses over the Fall is not a position that has crossed only our individual selves, nor a position that remains within the limited sphere of the family or the nation. It is a position that has crossed the world and crossed the Cosmos. God wishes for God, the True Parents, and man to have a point of unity of heart (심정) in such a position.
We must know this fact. Seen this way, the position where you, who must become children of the True Parents, must dwell is likewise such a position. The place God wishes for, the place the True Parents wish for, and the place you wish for are the same.
The Fulfillment of Responsibility Seen Through the Principle of Restoration
Then where must we pour all our devotion and passion?
We must pour it into fulfilling responsibility. Yet when we look at ourselves, we are limited to fulfilling our own individual responsibility. The great majority of people are so. Seen through the principle of Restoration, such a person cannot bring any purpose to completion through the fulfillment of responsibility.
Even if one has fulfilled the responsibility centered on one’s individual self, because that is like a small point, one must again form a line centering on that point and must form a plane centering on that line. This is a ridge the individual must, without fail, cross.
A man must become a husband and wife with a woman, a woman with a man, form a family, and bear children. And that family must become a good family and form a good tribe; a good tribe forms a good people, a good people a good nation, a good nation a good world, and when that good world forms the Cosmos, that Cosmos becomes a good Cosmos.
You must know that this is the road of life, placed in the destiny of having to go the course of Restoration, in which the ridges to be crossed are piled up layer upon layer.
Yet that road is not a road one goes alone. Whether going east or going west, one must, without fail, connect on that road the standard by which the three parties are united; without that, it is a road one cannot go. And in an environment where one cannot go that road, one cannot prepare even a focal point of victory. You must know this fact.
Seen centering on the fulfillment of responsibility, what is first demanded of us?
It is to have the inner standard—the point of unity of the three parties. God, the True Parents, and I must be eternally united. Nothing opposed to this can be tolerated. It will not do for one to set up some assertion of one’s own and say, “I must do it this way.”
In the history of Restoration, Heaven is the root, the True Parents are the branch, and we human beings are like the leaves; therefore, the human beings who correspond to the leaves cannot lead the branch, and the True Parents who correspond to the branch cannot lead the root. Therefore, to the very end, the leaves, which are you, must follow the branch, which is the True Parents, centering on God, who is the root.
When one looks at each individual today, the problem is that however excellent that individual may be, he cannot lead the whole. That individual, only by having the content of principle—in other words, a heart (심정) centered on God—can lead the whole.
Therefore, only when there is the ability and power of activity centered on God’s heart (심정) can one be recognized as having stood in a position that is not mistaken on the road of Restoration. In such a position, the three—God, the True Parents, and I—can become one.
The Unification Church’s View of Faith
Then how has the history of Restoration been until now?
The relationship between God and us was vague. So we had to pass through a normal and principled road, but because we were in a position where the bridge needed for that road was not laid, we could not but make a leap. That is why He said, “Believe! Believe unconditionally!” He asked us to believe, transcending all reason, transcending consciousness, and transcending the process of cognition.
We must know that until now we have pursued God from such a one-sided and vague viewpoint. So now we must escape from such a faith and believe, knowing the concrete content.
We, who live centering on such content, must be connected to the cosmic-historical center. That center—the Lord who comes, that is, the True Parents—is one to whom I cannot but be connected.
The Unification Church’s view of faith differs from the view of faith until now.
Until now, people believed vaguely in centering on Jesus and the Bible—that is, centering on the noun “Savior.” But we, centering on the noun “Parent,” having furnished the relationship of father and son with God, believe from the position of a child.
Parent and child have a tie that cannot be severed however one tries. It is so from birth, so while living, and so until death. Therefore, you cannot live or act apart from the Parent. That Parent, the cosmic-historical center, did not come holding a tie of the Parent’s own alone but came holding an absolute tie centered on God.
Therefore, you cannot fulfill responsibility or attain the purpose without being connected to the position where God and that Parent are united.
The most important thing is that God, the Parents, and I must always be united. If one deviates, an accident occurs every time. When one has deviated here, even though one said one was for the sake of the Will, through that matter one becomes, without knowing it, a traitor. There will be no one who, from the outset, thought he would become a traitor. What one did thinking one was doing well ends up becoming so.
Therefore, you who are here must find the point of unity of the three parties. You must know the fact that, in fulfilling responsibility, this is the most important focal point. The foundation on which one can be inwardly united with God and the Parents is heart (심정).
Only when there is heart can one pass through the love of parents, the love of husband and wife, and the love of children; and only when it becomes so can the three parties be united. That becomes the focal point of human living today.
Where are the love of parents, the love of husband and wife, and the love of children formed?
They are formed in the family. They are formed centering on the relationship of father and son. Therefore, without the three—God, the True Parents, and me—being united, there can be no completion of Restoration.
In the Unification Church today too, there are many people who act each in his own way according to his thinking. You must know that when the Teacher has presented a certain purpose, your life and death hang upon it. That is the same for the Teacher himself too. The Teacher does not do everything as he pleases.
From this point, God is wishing for the Parents of humanity to come forth. Those Parents must have a standard setup of how they ought to be toward the children.
There can be no parent who sets the children out in front and pursues only his profit and only his happiness. He must sacrifice from beginning to end for the sake of the children. When there is something unrighteous here, he must fight. And when there is a matter that cannot be forgiven in one generation, he must prepare a road by which that matter can be forgiven even across dozens of generations.
A person often, when he has done wrong, wishes to be forgiven on the spot. But you must know that it cannot be so. On the course of going forward, centering on the Teacher, some people think that if they merely report to the Teacher what they did wrong, everything is resolved on the spot. But it is not so arranged. For that matter to be resolved, a period is without fail needed. Only by passing through a course of indemnity for a certain period can one be forgiven; it is not that one can be forgiven on the spot just because one reported.
It is the same before God too. It is not that just because one prays, “I did wrong, so forgive me,” one can be forgiven by that alone. You must know that however well that prayer got through, without passing through a period of indemnity for some time, forgiveness is not granted.
The Fulfillment of Responsibility and the Unity of Heart
For you, the problem is how, within the unity of heart (심정) of the three parties, you carry on the living of a day, if it be a day; how you carry on the living of a month, if it be a month; and how you gather a year, if it be a year, by such a standard.
Unless the heart (심정) is firmly and solidly united, then however much one says one has fulfilled responsibility, because it has no relation whatsoever to the course of the providence of Restoration, the three parties must be inwardly united.
Then how must the road you go be?
Children find the value of all existence through the parents. Whom does a child growing up in the family resemble? It resembles the parents. Whom do those children follow? They follow the parents. It is so arranged.
From this viewpoint, when we pursue our responsibility today, what is that responsibility?
It is to prepare the point of unity of the three parties. You must know clearly that without preparing that, one cannot accomplish the purpose.
Originally, had Adam and Eve not fallen but formed a family and attended God, from that time the relationship would have been formed. Had it become so, the purpose of Adam and Eve, the ancestors of humanity, would have been united before the purpose God aims for, and the children of Adam and Eve, who held a purpose united with God’s purpose, would likewise have lived gazing at the same purpose. Then, without fail, accomplishing that purpose would have become the wish of every family, tribe, and nation as a whole, and it would have become the tradition.
But that purpose all changed through the Fall of Adam and Eve. A hundred out of a hundred, a thousand out of a thousand, all hold a different purpose. All, in different positions, have pursued their purpose, each in his own way. That is, through the Fall, the purpose of humanity was not connected to one focal point but was scattered in all directions.
This must be bound together, and how must it be done?
Because it was scattered through the failure of the human ancestors Adam and Eve to fulfill responsibility, it must be bound together, centering on the Parent. There will be ethnic differences and differences in cultural background, in the background of knowledge, or in innate nature (素性). Though these are opposed to one another and furnish forms of ten thousand kinds, even so we must bind them together. The starting point is one. The root is one.
You will see the grass grow luxuriantly in the spring garden. That the leaves grow luxuriantly is not for them to remain as leaves. They are growing luxuriantly by one stem. When the standard by which this stem and these leaves can exist is thus set up, then at last the flower blooms and the fruit is formed.
In this way, the leaves exist to make the flower bloom and the fruit form; the leaves do not exist so that the leaves themselves become the flower and the leaves themselves become the fruit.
The Will Aims Toward the Whole Purpose
When one looks at people today, be it the person called such-and-such or the person called so-and-so, all thirty million think differently, each one. Because the purpose differs, there is a person who sets out from here and a person who sets out from there. If it is that way, it comes to nothing but ruin.
Looking at the history of Christianity until now, one can see that countless good people walked a road of suffering. Even during the time our Unification Church has developed this far today, countless people you do not know walked a road of suffering. Yet among them there were also many people who, while outwardly saying they were for the sake of the Unification Church, used the Teacher and used the Word of the Unification Church and moved centering on their own individual desires and then departed. Such people have all perished.
Seen centering on the problem of responsibility, our responsibility is to bind together. That is the goal our Unification Church aims for. Unification means becoming one. Therefore, we must become one. Without our becoming one, no one can govern anyone.
Then, centering on what does one become one?
Does one become one centering on oneself? No. One must become one centering on God. We ought to have inherited the bloodline and heart (심정) of the human ancestors, but because those human ancestors became the matrix of the Fall, the standard by which we could inherit the traditional history was distorted.
And so this became the seed of han. Therefore, we today must transcend all our notions and consciousness until now and be gathered before one standard. You must know this clearly.
If each of you looks back on yourself until now, you can see that you have thought each in your own way. Some people complain, and some people say all sorts of things about the headquarters, and this cannot be forgiven.
The Will aims not toward some individual purpose but toward the whole purpose.
Looking at a tree, there is without fail a root, a stem, branches, and leaves. Seen in stages, before there were leaves, there were branches; before there were branches, there was a stem, and before there was a stem, there was a root. Then can there be a leaf that has no need of the root, no need of the stem, and no need of the branches? Then that thing itself cannot exist either. Therefore, to complete one tree, each must fulfill its responsibility.
The Teacher, passing through his whole life until now, has never, when he attained some glory, thought of it centering on the Teacher himself. It is because he knows that it began from Heaven.
Unless One Becomes One in Heart with God and the True Parents
Since the motive is Heaven, one must connect the result to Heaven. To say it again, in one’s daily living, seen centering on the purpose of fulfilling responsibility, one must without fail connect the result to the motive. Then how does one make motive and result agree? This is the problem.
Looking at the social environment, this is arranged so as not to be done. Since it is 180 degrees different, one must set up a condition for indemnity and, for a certain period, overcome that environment.
Today countless people are offering devotion on the road of the Way. They are all receiving something, each in his own way, within God’s spiritual providence. They think they themselves are the foremost in this country. In fact, they are receiving such revelations spiritually. But because that is a result, one must pursue the fundamental cause. In pursuing that cause, one must not pursue it centering on oneself. Why not? Because that revelation is a result that appeared with the unity of heart (심정) with God and the unity of heart with the True Parents of humanity as its matrix. A person who does not even know such a cause and grasps only the result is in a position like a tree branch without a root and so, in the end, becomes miserable.
Before we fulfill responsibility, what we must first do is find the point of unity of the three parties. Without the three parties being completely united, then even if one has fulfilled responsibility, the result of that fulfilled responsibility becomes something that has no relation whatsoever to Heaven. You must always know that.
Jesus, even while going the road of death in the Garden of Gethsemane or on the summit of Golgotha, believed that God loved him. Because God sent him to this earth not as one man but as the Son of God, he held the absolute heart (심정) that it must be none other than himself who held a heart of God that no one else had.
Then what was the final purpose of Jesus, who went the road of Restoration with such a heart?
It was to become the Parent of humanity. Because Jesus, setting such a solemn task before him and longing for it, came forth uniting his mind, Christianity today has become a worldwide religion. Had it not been so, not only would Christianity not have developed worldwide, but God would not have developed Christianity worldwide.
You must know that, because Jesus was sacrificed on the principled course of Restoration, God was able to stretch out the hand of the Providence by which He could pass through a new historical age.
Without motive and result being united, one cannot say one has carried out responsibility. Therefore, everything must become one. Centering on what must one become? One must become one with God’s heart (심정) and the Parents’ heart. It is not that because I exist, the Parents exist. It is not that because the Parents exist, God exists. It is because God exists that the Parents exist, and it is because the Parents exist that I exist. Therefore, the Unification Church members today, who are in the position of children, must absolutely hold God’s heart (심정) and the Parents’ heart.
Because human beings fell and dropped, one must pass up from below through the stages of formation, growth, and completion.
If we regard you as the formation stage, then the Parents are the growth stage, and God is the completion stage. To reach the standard of having completed, through what must one pass? One must pass through the heart (심정)—that is, love.
Seen centering on the family, to make that family a good family, parent, son, and grandson must achieve unity of heart (심정).
However complicated a problem arises in that household, the mind by which the parent loves the son, or the mind by which the grandfather loves the grandson, must not change. Only if there is such a foundation can God carry out the providence of Restoration.
You must set up such an absolute standard in your mind and, escaping a fragmentary individual view of living, or such an environment, hold a four-directional character.
Just as spring, summer, autumn, and winter come about upon the earth according as the direction in which the sun shines upon the earth, so one must furnish a direction according to one’s own quality.
Seen centering on the Will, what is it in you that has gone against the Will?
Because Cain and Abel could not become one before the parent, Adam’s family met calamity. Within our Unification Church itself too, if the three parties are not united, such a thing will unfold.
Therefore, so long as the center does not hold content that is to be denounced before Heaven, you must absolutely become one centering on the standard the center has set up. Yet when those who have been set up cannot become one and fail in responsibility, the center that set them up bears that responsibility.
In our Unification Church too, if the Teacher set up the president of the Association, whether that person has turned out well or not is not the problem.
First, one must become one with him. In carrying out the operation, one must furnish the necessary conditions together with him.
For the Fulfillment of Responsibility to Be Received as Heaven’s
As I told you at some time, the Teacher has until now worked centering on the 36 Couples and paved the highest standard of the Blessing.
Therefore, until this foundation is paved worldwide, however much difficulty there may be, the Teacher will lead you forward. Once one has set out, one must go until one crosses the last ridge. One must, without fail, gather it up to that standard and bring it to an end. Until then, those around must absolutely obey the center. One must believe even in perishing and perish, believe even in prospering and prosper. There must not be a voice here that says this and that. You must know that the Teacher has until now pushed forward the work centering on such people.
Without the standard of the Blessing being set up, however great a responsibility one has fulfilled, that is not a fulfillment. It cannot be received as Heaven’s.
What kind of person is Satan?
He is a person who says, “God, I too, even while unable to eat, was loyal before God no less than anyone. So let the work I do pass. If You let the work I do pass, I will follow God beyond Adam and Eve.” A person who says such a thing is Satan, is a traitor.
The motive must come forth from God. Man is in a position of having to conform to the motive God presents. And yet, doing some work centering on one’s own motive, one tries to attach God to the result of that work. Therefore, one must set up the standard of good and evil. You must know the standard of good and evil.
From what did the secret method by which the Teacher today is conversant with the spiritual world, which you do not know, come?
Before that, what you must know is that, eventually, one must return to the spiritual world, and at that time, can you return to Heaven’s side?
You cannot return. That is because until now one has presented some condition of their own and made God recognize it as His. One did not try to be recognized by God. It was not that one tried to be recognized, but that one tried to make oneself recognized. Such a person is a traitor. But if one stands in a position of saying, “However difficult a matter, I will take charge of it,” one becomes a loyal subject.
From this point, to work in a position where one has not completely set up the principled point of unity of the three parties by which Heaven can be together with one is an extremely dangerous thing.
Those among you who have been in for more than three years must go out to the provinces and work. And since one must restore the four-position foundation, one must pass through three provinces (三道) centering on the province one lives in, if it be a province. At the least, one must pass through three provinces. That is why, in the seven-year course, countless young people were driven out in all directions. Without doing so, restoration through indemnity is not done. That God drove out fallen Adam and Eve was to do restoration through indemnity. They, too, must again form a tie with Heaven and return to the gateway of Restoration.
Cain and Abel Differ in Their Fields of Responsibility, but Must Become One
Then what must all fallen people do to form the tie?
Can they form it if they come into the Unification Church as they please?
That is a tie one’s own individual self has formed, not one God has formed. If one has come to know this fact, one must fulfill one’s responsibility. One must do restoration through indemnity. One cannot but seek all that Adam lost and enter, beginning from the very place where Adam was driven out. This is the course of Restoration. It is the same for you too. Some people say, “Can it not be done where one is?” but that is one’s own thinking.
Looking at history until now, whenever a new history began, there was a movement of the family, if it be the family, the tribe, if it be the tribe, or the people, if it be the people. Why did that movement occur? It was to make the central being accomplish the Will. To accomplish the Will, one must, without fail, go outside. Jacob was so, Moses was so, and Jesus was so. Today the Teacher too has come forth doing so.
Wasn't Joseph so as well?
Joseph too left home and went to Egypt to accomplish the Will. Originally Joseph ought to have accomplished the Will there and returned. But because he could not return, the parents went down seeking him. Because one must accomplish the Will and return, the course of Restoration to Canaan came about. It is not that the parents go down seeking. Before that, the child ought to have returned. Joseph ought to have accomplished the Will and returned. In the same way, we today too must go such a road of destiny.
Seen centering on Adam’s family, in what position must Cain be?
Cain’s position is a position that must be sent out. And what position is Abel’s? Abel is in the position of a son who must be at the parents’ knee. Then this Abel-type being and this Cain-type being must be gathered, and how must they be joined?
On the course of Restoration, either Abel must go first, or Cain must go first. Cain must fulfill both his mission and Abel’s mission; these two. That is, he must both do filial duty before the parents and go out and fight in the parents’ stead.
God sets up two sons and has one son fulfill the way of filial devotion and attend to the parents, and has one son go outside and fight. But because doing filial devotion is a principle of the Heavenly Way while fighting is not a principle of the Heavenly Way, Cain must in any case pass through Abel. You must know that without that, one cannot form the tie of father and son with God.
Therefore, seen centering on the problem of our responsibility, one must achieve the point of unity of the three parties, which cannot be severed however one tries. A person who says this and that about this is that far distant from God.
You must do everything by the principled standard. Saying this and that about that standard is because one does not know the Teacher well. You may know the Teacher who has appeared—that is, the Teacher who has appeared as a result—but you do not know well the problem of the Teacher’s inner heart (심정), connected with Heaven, that he has passed through until now. A person who, while being so, says this and that about it, does not last long. Such a person is all Satan.
The Attitude of Mind by Which One Can Form a Tie with God
What was it that fell in the Garden of Eden?
It was to criticize centering on other conditions. This is an extremely dangerous thing. Such a person, however well he does, cannot stand before Heaven. The Teacher is not a person who accepts such conduct of living or deals with it.
Here there is the president of the Association, and this president is a person who stands in the Teacher’s stead. Whether he fulfills responsibility or not, I will lead him to the end. Until this enormous work called national indemnity is fully done, I will set the president of the Association out in front and fight forward. He may have flaws on the side of character, but even if there are flaws, it is not he himself who bears responsibility for that, but the Teacher who bears it. Who set him up? The Teacher set him up. So it is the Teacher who bears responsibility.
If the Teacher perishes, he perishes, but it is not that he perishes. The Teacher knows the method of handling various problems. The handling is done not in summer but in autumn. From this point, you must constantly strive with the proposition of the fulfillment of responsibility set up upon a united standard.
One must not, alone and independently, criticize, saying this and that. When one goes out to the provinces to witness too, if one thinks, “I must do my best first,” that is a mistaken thought. The thought, “I must do well and be praised before the Teacher, and go to the church and be praised,” is a mistaken thought. Be praised, but do not think of being praised; think, “What must I do to form a tie within the realm of the Parents’ heart (심정)?
What must I do to form a tie with God’s heart?
What must I do to form a solid tie with God that no one at all can interfere with?” This inner thing is the important problem; the outer thing is not the problem.
If what one has striven and worked at until now was because of an outer condition—to be recognized before the Teacher or before the members—it is a grave matter.
Holding the mind, “Recognize me if you will, and do not if you will not; the problem is how, through such a process, I connect my inner heart (심정) with God,” one must toil and deal with many people. Then there is something to be gained there. From conduct done to be praised, there is not one thing that becomes a plus before the church. A person who did his utmost to be praised says, whenever there is difficulty, that he is aggrieved because the church does not recognize that he is undergoing difficulty for someone’s sake. If there is a person who thinks that way, that person is the problem.
The Teacher has until now lived a difficult life. He went to prison several times. But the Teacher always thought about centering on the problem of the responsibility he had to fulfill. Even for the suffering he underwent because the people did wrong, he did not blame the people.
At one point, the left and right are divided. Life and death too are decided at one point, and good and evil too are divided at one point. Centering on even one action, it can become good, and it can become evil.
Even After Fulfilling Responsibility, It Differs According to What Mind One Holds
Then what kind of position is the position where it can become good?
What kind of position is the position where it can become evil?
One must not set the result one has toiled and gained out before the church and try to be publicly recognized. One must think that being persecuted before many people and shedding blood and sweat and struggling—whether the church recognizes it or not—is done to indemnify the historical circumstances tangled within oneself and is done to tear down the wall that made it impossible to form a tie of heart (심정) with God and form the relationship.
For how many years must one do such toil?
Toil of about a year will not do. For myself to be connected to the historical course of God, who has passed through six thousand years of history, one must go a road of suffering of some seven years. To dig thus into even the deep valley of God’s heart (심정) and connect myself is more precious than anything.
If one plows the ground and plants seed in the spring, when life sprouts, without fail a sprout comes out, but it does not come out of itself. One must keep pace with the environment.
First, there must be the ground, and there must be the warmth of the spring sun, and so on. In the same way, to form a relationship with Heaven, one must dig in deeply, centering on a normal standard. The more the storms rise and cause disorder, one must think that this is not to ruin me, but a trial to make firm the tie between God and me. Therefore, one must think that if it has become one condition by which one can form an absolute tie with God, then it has and does not become a condition of lamentation or a condition of sorrow.
If, instead of that, one says this and that out of the thought that the church does not recognize one, it is entirely the conclusion that one did the work centering on oneself.
You must know clearly that on the day such a thought enters, your conduct appears as an enormous result, and you come to stand in a position like burying yourself in a pit you dug yourself.
The Road of Bearing Ever Greater Responsibility Is the Road of Restoration
The Teacher holds no expectation toward you. With the mind, “Cooperate if you will, and do not if you will not,” the Teacher goes the road he must go. He may lament that the degree (度數) and amount of devotion he must offer before the road of seeking God are small, but he does not expect you.
So you yourselves must know and unite your standard. You must know that when this standard goes wrong, a difference as great as that between heaven and earth arises.
What is the point at which the Unification Church differs from the established religions? It is that in the Unification Church we teach the ideology of living and teach the way of duty. To teach the way of duty means to teach the method of living. Religion means coming forth seeking the road of the Way.
In the Way, the highest standard and the conclusion are the True Parents. You must connect yourselves, centering on the standard where God and the True Parents are united, to the position of a child who can be united with that.
Only when God can be free and the True Parents can be free, can I be happy. If I am glad but the parents are sorrowful, can God be glad looking at that family?
Today the family must become one with the parents, centering on the Heavenly Way. Only when the parents are glad and the children are glad, can the Heavenly Way and human ethics be conversant in that family; it will not do to say, “Whatever becomes of the parents, I will do as I please.” You must know this standard clearly.
Now you must work for the sake of the church. The church assists you and presents the road you must go. It is a place that, with a step one stage ahead of you, takes responsibility for the environment you are placed in and paves the road you must go.
Looking at our Unification Church members out in the provinces, there are people who, when they have worked, ask that the toil for what they worked be recognized. As soon as they do the work, they ask for the toil to be recognized. That will not do. If it is that way, one perishes.
If the people of the Republic of Korea, having done work, all asked the president to recognize them, the Republic of Korea would perish. You must first do the work you must do before anyone recognizes you.
When one is recognized, it is not the individual who is recognized but the whole. It is not only the individual who is recognized. If the whole is recognized, the individual cannot but be recognized. If the whole does not recognize, the individual cannot be recognized.
Where is there such an irresponsible organization that ignores the whole and, centering on its assertion, tries to be recognized by the upper level? There can be none. If one joins hands and works with such fellows, one perishes.
Do you know how many people there are who try to do away with us?
Not knowing the Will of the Teacher, who is doing historical work, when one looks quietly, they are saying all sorts of things. Was it because it was important for the Teacher to become famous that he has led the Unification Church until now? It is because the Will demands it that he has come forth until now.
Since the fellow called, I have once risen; I will do it until I see the end. Until Heaven severs that tie, I will do it tenaciously.
If one has started some work, one ought to decide, centering on the purpose, failure, or success, and then start another work; one must not make a fuss doing another work without even properly settling one work.
Our Unification Church members alone must know such content clearly. You, who were born receiving a fallen bloodline—do you think you can be restored without walking the wretched course of Restoration?
You, in the position of children, must go uniting with the heart (심정) of God and the True Parents. Even after doing the work, when Heaven treats you well, you must know to be ashamed of it. You must not say this and that because you are not recognized. The church is not arranged to entertain you.
In the course of Restoration, you who are fallen must set up conditions of indemnity. You must, whenever and wherever, offer devotion to set up conditions of indemnity. When you set up that condition with a mind of gratitude, if God comes in joy and helps you, it is thankful, and even if He does not help you, you must not ask to be helped.
The Teacher can now meet the administrative personnel of the Republic of Korea. But the Teacher, even if it kills him, does not say to them, “Please cooperate with the Unification Church.”
Our Unification Church members may make such a request from a free position, but the Teacher’s position is different. It is not that the Teacher does not negotiate because he has no means to meet and negotiate with anyone. Why does he not do it? Because there is a responsibility he must fulfill first.
If only that responsibility is fulfilled, all come to cooperate. If one builds a third floor in a world that has only two floors, it comes to be revealed. So one must first build up the merit by which that can be. More than explanation, merit is needed.
Why would the Teacher pettily criticize anyone?
The Teacher does not criticize anyone and says that I am right. The Teacher has lived such a life until now. My road to go is time-sensitive. Since my road is time-sensitive, recognize me if you will, and do not if you will not. I say, just wait and see. In going such a road, you must go offering devotion.
What must the tree grafted to the Lord grow up and do?
It must be for the sake of the world or the Cosmos. So do not be aggrieved over an evaluation made of the fresh green sprout now growing. We must do in three years what others did over dozens of years. The purpose is to invest all one’s effort in one’s own development; the purpose is nothing else.
If, in the process of carrying out responsibility, one wishes to be recognized by others, one is a fool. Having gone to a feast house where one does not even know whether they will give one rice cake or not, does it do to first ask for a little kimchi broth? Think about it. When one does not know whether they will give one a meal or not, does it do to take out one’s spoon first? A person must live furnished with courtesy. You must know that.
That I say this to you today is because this July 20th is the day of setting out on the 40-day witnessing worldwide.
Where has the cause of our Unification Church members’ failure in facing some work lain until now?
It is because they toil and then try to be praised. Even when they do work, they try to obtain some good result and be praised. We must uphold God while passing through a process of trial. Being praised is not the problem. And rather than the result of the toil for the work being great, the result that appears from becoming one must be great.
The greater the result, the more one must become a person who bows his head. If one has obtained a family result, one must make it become a tribal result. If one has obtained a tribal result, before boasting of it, one must make it become a national result.
If one has obtained a national result, one must make it a state result, and if one has obtained a state result, one must make it become a worldwide result. Therefore, one must rejoice and give thanks. The road of bearing ever greater responsibility as one goes on and on is the road of Restoration.
Unification Church members must become people who can say, “Even if the most evil family in the Republic of Korea needs me, I will still go.” There the authority of goodness is set up. The position of evil drops away. You must become one who goes forth furnished with the conditions by which Heaven can thus draw you.
The Teacher, when you get to know him, is truly a fearsome person. When seekers of the Way come to the Teacher, after talking a few words, the Teacher already knows that person’s level. And then the Teacher, while unable to eat himself, feeds him, and while unable to clothe himself, buys clothes for him. He treats him better than that person’s own parents. When one does so, he says it is good. He rejoices as if heaven and earth were his world. Yet in the end he comes to believe the Teacher’s words.
For whose sake, in the end, has one dedicated dozens of years in the world of the Way?
Was it for the sake of beloved parents? No. It was for one’s own sake. The Teacher teaches the seekers of the Way who come in that way the duty they must do. Centering on a certain period, he teaches the duty a person of Heaven must do. Then they gather the Teacher's— their—merit and distribute it to the Unification Church members.
If a religion goes forward centering on its people or nation, it perishes. Only by going forward for the sake of all people of the world and for the development of the world does it leave behind a historical result.
Considering Christianity, how wretched Jesus was! Branded a traitor to the nation, he had nowhere at all to set his foot. He was in a pitiable position where he could be accepted nowhere. But had he lived for the sake of the individual and for the sake of the family, Christianity could not have developed into a worldwide religion until now.
