Today I shall speak with the title “A New Spring.” You are now greeting the spring season. When one considers the question of what likes spring most, first of all the grasses and trees (초목, 草木) like it. And next? Insects, insects like it. And next? Birds like it. And next? Animals. Animals like it, and among those animals the highest animal is man.
Man, Who Through the Fall Could Not Greet Spring
Yet when one looks at whether man greets spring first or greets it last, one can know it by looking in the morning. If one rises early in the morning, the sound of birds is heard before the sound of people.
If there is a God, when would God greet spring? When on earth would God greet spring? If God made all the beings that appear in spring, God would have greeted spring only after seeing those beings He made greet spring. If, when God greets spring, the grasses and trees greet spring first and the grass greets spring first, that is the very first stage. And next, would they not greet spring in order, from insects to birds to animals?
Then, passing through all such processes, what sort of place is the final place of the fulfillment of longing at which one can make the foremost greeting of spring, the place where one can greet the real spring? All of you, the phenomenon that unfolds in spring is that, in the present world of all things, when spring comes, the grasses and trees put out new shoots and make a new beginning; but in the world of animals or insects, and still more in the world of animals, the busiest thing together with the greeting of spring is propagation. It is bearing young.
If one listens to the birds in the morning, why do they cry so? They cry to seek a mate. We can know that they are making a departure for whispering love. Why is that? That the birds go chirping is, in the end, to make a new departure, a new propagation.
Then, seen from God’s side, when is the time when God is most joyful?
Wouldn't God too, without fail, desire a place where He too can sing a spring song, and the objects God likes too can sing a spring song? All of you, do insects sing too? (“Yes.”) What do you think it is like for grasses and trees? (“They sing.”) All of you, have you heard the sound of grasses and trees singing? (Laughter.) Though one cannot hear it, one must see it that they sing. Seeing that the grasses too put out leaves, and the trees too put out branches, and they all propagate, one must see it that they all sing.
Seen in that way, in singing a spring song, must not we human beings, or if there is a God, God too, sing a spring song? It is a fact that God Himself too would have wished to sing a spring song, but when one sets before one the question of whether He has become such a God as sings a spring song, it is a serious problem.
If originally God had greeted a normal spring and set out, and if one turned to the right like this, it ought to have turned like this. Seen in this way, where is spring? Here is spring. From here to here is spring. Now, what is next? Summer follows.
It is the same with our one day. Morning is spring. It corresponds to spring. And next, midday is the same as summer. And next, evening is the same as autumn. If one considers this centering upon relative relationships, how it is arranged is that autumn and spring are in a relative relationship. Seen in this way, if spring is above, autumn is below. And next, if summer is above, winter is below.
Seen in this way, the history of humanity too goes the same orbit. Then what does man’s fall mean? It means that he could not greet spring. It became the reverse, the reverse. This did not become like this from here; it became upside down. From here it became upside down and began to go upside down.
Only by Becoming a Seed Holding Vital Force Can One Greet a New Spring
That is why, setting history before us, even though spring came, it was a sorrowful world. And summer too became upside down. So one must greet spring again. Setting our human history before us, the departure of human history was made while greeting a sorrowful spring. It began not from song but from tears. What that means is that in Eden the human ancestor Adam fell and was driven out. It set out from tears.
If one quietly looks at the ancient sphere of civilization, where civilization arose—the ancient human beings, not having settled in the agricultural age, moved about and became sorrowful people. And next, as they settled, it became the age of civilization, and this was generally a tropical civilization. It was the age of the tropical sphere of civilization. The Egyptian sphere of civilization, or the Yellow River civilization of the agricultural age or the hunting age, belongs to the tropical sphere. And next, ancient civilization originated along the Euphrates River or in places within the tropical sphere. The Babylonian sphere of civilization centering upon the Euphrates River also belonged to this tropical sphere. It belonged within the semi-tropical sphere.
Why did ancient civilization, which developed thus as a tropical civilization, perish? Why did it perish?
While this was happening, it came into the temperate sphere of civilization, which is the present civilization, the temperate sphere of civilization. So the present sphere of civilization—England or Germany or America—all of them belong to the temperate sphere of civilization. They are all connected, centering upon the twenty-three-degree sphere centering upon the equator.
What this means is that it enters autumn, the autumn-season sphere of civilization. That is why everything bears fruit at this time. Art or culture or literature or philosophy—it is a time when every field bears fruit. It is the same with religion too….
And so now the end has come for the democratic world of this temperate sphere of civilization. While this happens, I see that the temperate sphere of civilization will pass, and a time will come when the frigid sphere of civilization moves the world. What that is is the age of the threat of worldwide communism centering upon the Soviet Union today. This will sweep the whole world.
Then the leaves of the trees will all fall. Only the bare branches will remain. And next the wind will blow. There the dry trees that do not hold vital force will all break. In the end, living trees will remain, and completely ripened seed will remain. These two will remain. That is why, if in the fallen human world there are two kinds that will remain after the frigid sphere of civilization has swept through, beings holding life will remain, and what is equipped with the seed of life will remain. This is the overall conclusion.
Seen in that way, what is man’s vital force?
It is the same with man himself. In the end, the root is God. The trunk is humanity, and the branches too are humanity. It is the same as a tree. Have you become a person holding a root, holding life? If there is such a person, only that person will remain.
Now! If one is only alive in that way, however much the wind blows, one does not break. It is unmistakable that only such a being as holds a vital force that can overcome winter will remain. Do you understand? (“Yes.”)
And next, what is it—a seed with a hard shell, a seed holding a vital force that can fall to the ground and greet spring? For such a seed, the colder the winter, the better. Why is that? Because through the cold of winter, the seed that has fallen to the ground can freeze so that its shell is stripped off. It bursts in that way. A hard seed, when winter comes, freezes and bursts. Because it bursts so, a new shoot can come out.
That is why a seed holding such vital force, such a seed, holds the qualification of being able to greet spring again. In the end, what is it—one must become either a branch of a living tree, or a seed taken from a living tree; only by becoming one of these two kinds can one greet a new spring. The seed holds the root. It holds the trunk and the branches and the leaves too. What that is, is that it is the completion of the whole reduced in size. It is the life of the whole concentrated.
Christianity, Which Must Become an Evergreen
If one looks at the history of human civilization until now, the frigid-sphere civilization will without fail rule the temperate-sphere civilization. The time has come when the frigid-sphere civilization sweeps through. The problem of communism is the same in Europe and the same in Africa too. Whether tropical sphere or temperate sphere, it is exerting the same influence upon all. How is it with America? It is receiving the same threat. If all this simply ended as it is, it would be a great matter, but I see that a new spring will without fail come seeking.
Because God knows this, He will send a master to make a new greeting of spring. It is a natural conclusion that because God knows that ideal age, He will send one central being to make preparation for greeting that age.
That is why the problem is whether you have become a living tree standing on God’s side, or have become a branch of a tree, or have become a seed. This is an actual problem.
So He sought to do such a mission centering upon Judaism, and has come forth doing it through Christianity. Yet when one asks in what position Christianity now stands, the problem is whether, even though it has become bare branches, the branches are alive, or whether even the trunk has died or is dying.
How is it? Is Christianity alive?
(“No.”) Are the countless religions now fresh, so that though there are no leaves, the branches are completely alive? How is it? (“They are dead.”) If it held such a great root, the question is whether the great trunk that came out from here is alive or dead. Is the root alive or dead? Is it alive or dead? It is alive. Then what has become of the trunk? A state of paralysis—it passed through a state of paralysis, and all died. If it all dies and falls over, Christianity perishes. Countless religions all perish.
That is why, at the slightest thing, they cut one another off. Saying, “Your religion is not the trunk; our religion is the trunk.… Yet can there be two trunks? Which is the trunk? What is the trunk? It must be a really living trunk. However much the threat of winter comes, one must drive it all off and be alive with dignity. One must be a living tree. Yet, is there such a Christianity? How is the Roman Curia? (“It is not.”) So these must be cut off.
What the spiritual foundation of the democratic world is, is Christianity. Then must this tree become an evergreen, or must it become a deciduous tree? (“An evergreen.”) Then it is ideal. Then could communism come into the Soviet Union, which in olden times was the sphere of Greek Orthodoxy, and could communism come into Europe, which was the ground of Christianity or the old religion? Has Europe, centering upon Roman Catholicism, been an evergreen tree until the present? Speaking of America today, has it become like an evergreen tree?
Because it has not become so, they all get struck by the wind so that not only do the branches fall, but even the tree dies and falls over.
If one does not die here, one must hold nutrients so that the root does not die and one shoot must, without fail, come out. There is no hope unless, in the midst of the threat of the communist sphere, one shoot connected with the root comes out, driving off all that threat with dignity. It is despair, despair. God…. If that is absent, even the root perishes. Even the root dies.
Let Us Inherit the Vital Force of the Frigid Sphere of Civilization Through the Yankee Stadium Rally
Then in this period when these despairing frigid civilizations sweep through one another, what is the thing that will greet a new spring? What is this that has dried up and died in such a framework? This frail one will greet spring. And it grows even in winter. It is growing even under the threat of communism. It will become an evergreen tree and simply form a green forest.
When that devil-like great king called winter sees a shoot coming out of a small evergreen tree, it seems it will disappear. Yet the root remains. Yet when God sees such a thing, if He leaves this attached, it becomes an obstacle. So one must quickly cut this off with a snap.
Then when does one cut it off? One must cut it off not in winter when the sap is drawn in, but when, greeting spring, it is about to send it out.
God without fail cuts a tree that is not completely alive. Therefore, when the time comes when one can prune (전정, 剪定), we can see this and know that the time of God’s Will has come.
Then what becomes of it?
Christianity, Roman Catholicism, and all of them collapse and fall over with a crash. About when is that time? This was in the 1960s. Then what would He have cut while leaving what behind? Leaving behind such a small thing…. So what is the one shoot that can be in contact with the root on God’s side, holding content like a new Christianity and like a new Judaism? That is the Unification Church.
On the day this is cut with a crash, will this grow quickly or grow slowly? (“Quickly.”) It grows instantly. Because the nutrients that were going here all come out this way, the root grows rapidly in great proportion.
Now, if God cuts, when this branch is at the family standard, He cuts off the families, and when it is at the tribal standard, He cuts off the tribe. And next it will rise to the national standard and the worldwide standard. That is why everything collapses. The conclusion comes out that in the satanic world the family too collapses, and the tribe too collapses, and the people too collapse, and the nation too collapses. In exchange, Heaven, though small, is equipped with one form and comes forth binding it together.
So what the Unification Church is now going through is the same as having grown as such a green tree that goes effortlessly from the family standard up to the world standard. And so, crossing beyond one winter, it enters the age of a new spring. If it becomes so, the outer air (외기, 外氣), the cold air, disappears, and communism collapses too. That too begins to collapse in two directions. When the communism of the whole world splits into two, and from international communism it falls into national communism and ethnic communism, it is the end.
Now is the time when one cries out for ethnic communism. There too the leaves now fall and the branches begin to rot—a contrary phenomenon unfolds. Now the golden age of communism has passed.
Now an age is coming in which this crosses over, and when is that time? That time is 1976. What the Teacher is thinking of as truly strange this year is that only about a week ago it was cold and frost fell and snow fell. There is a magnolia tree at Belvedere, and that tree has bloomed. Yet frost fell and ruined all the beautiful flowers of Belvedere. Seeing that, the Teacher thought whether, lest human beings should meet such a thing in 1976, He had not indemnified it in their stead with all things. (Laughter.)
Then when is this replaced? When does it cross over?
It is the Yankee Stadium rally of June 1. Now, on the day we break the record here and go, one trunk comes into being completely in the democratic world. We set out as one new trunk.
Within a rapid period, because the root is alive, it is the principle that within a rapid period it can grow more than in olden times. Will it grow more than in olden times or grow less than that? (“It will grow more.”) Because it has been handed over again and inherited that which, holding vital force in the frigid sphere of civilization, has become like a seed, it expands even to the communist sphere. So if spring comes to the democratic world, spring must come to the communist world too.
Seen in this way, in this world indeed, on one side it seems to be perishing, and on another side there must be a movement like one new shoot that seems about to perish and yet does not perish but develops. That is precisely historical revelation. That is why the members of the Unification Church grow harder and harder so that one cannot touch them.
However much anyone does anything, one cannot touch them. A living tree, until spring, even in winter, is hard and alive. That cannot be done as one pleases with any power whatever of this world. Though small…. Neither the individual, nor the family, nor the nation, nor the world, nor any doctrine can do anything about it.
Only you hold a living vital force that can stretch out infinitely. That absolutely cannot be opened by force. Yet as spring comes, this gently prepares and, fitting the environment perfectly, opens out. And so it will bloom wide open in such an environment in which the cold does not come again and summer can come.
Our Doctrine Is a Doctrine of Making the World One and Making Heaven and Earth One
If human history fell and brought about a history of ill fortune, the conclusion comes out that unless one settles the accounts of this and advances toward one new direction and greets a new spring day, there is no hope. When that new spring day comes, would not God too be tense, and would it not be a time when man within today’s history too is tense to the utmost? When is that time? (“The Yankee Stadium rally.”) Reverend Moon is attaching everything to the Yankee Stadium rally like this and speaking to give you a stimulus! It can be so. How does one know that?
The sphere of civilization in which all the people of the whole world rejoice, and the whole spirit world rejoices, and God, who created all things, can indeed say that this is my time, is neither Christian civilization nor the civilization of the communist sphere. It is unmistakable that it is not.
If one looks at them all, they could not cross beyond the nation, the nation. Communism, too, seeks to conquer the world, centering upon the Slavic people; Christianity, too, seeks to conquer the world, centering upon its religion; and Judaism, too, seeks to conquer the world, centering upon its religion.
So here there must come out one new shoot as such a trans-ethnic movement, as worldism, as what can stretch out worldwide. Seen from such a perspective, it is a fact that there is nothing but the Unification Church. Do you understand? (“Yes.”) There is no race, no black, no white, no yellow.
We must make the world one and must make heaven and earth one. There is no doctrine as great and astonishing as ours. However much communism does, it cannot escape from the material world. Countless religions until now think only of what is spiritual and think that what is actual is a shadow and will all disappear. That is not so. We think that one must make the Kingdom of Heaven in reality too. And next, they say they will receive blessings from God, but we say let us help God and liberate God. We say we will give blessings to God. Has there been such a religion until now?
Seen in this way, if this is a fact, it is really fine and indescribably good. The trunk of the Unification Church will go anywhere. It will go to the communist sphere too, and will go to the spirit world too, and will go even to hell. I see that there is nowhere it does not go. Because it goes even to God, a thing unfolds by which it is unmistakable that it will remain. Is this a delusion or a fact? How is it with you? (“It is a fact.”)
Seen in this way, this doctrine is unmistakably a fine doctrine. Isn't this a doctrine that God too will unmistakably like, and every being called “man” will like, and every being called “all things” can also like? Where is there a doctrine with such a fine thought? When one is startled and opens one’s eyes, one opens them widest and is astonished. Opening the mouth, and if the five senses act, setting them all to act and going “Ah?”—is it not the finest thing beyond description?
The Thought of the Unification Church
All of you, when you come to the ground of Belvedere, does it not feel good merely to smell it? (“It feels good.”) Though one sits like this, one forgets all about one’s knees hurting. A fellow with a poor head comes early in the morning and sits in front; if one comes in later, one would sit comfortably on a chair, but since one is sitting in such a difficult posture, which does not even exist in the Western way, oh dear, it hurts—so why does one crawl in here? (Laughter.)
Well, in coming into the Unification Church, is it better to come in later since one will sit on a chair if one comes in later, or better to come in first and sit crouched with difficulty and carry on this play? (“It is better to come in first.”) Then, having sat down, do not complain. One cannot complain. If one cannot do so, get out. That is why, even if one’s legs hurt, that is a better condition for gratitude. “Oh dear, it is good! Oh dear, it is good! Oh dear, it is good!”—one must say so.
All of you, even if one set up cannons with America’s military power and fired all the atomic shells, could one pull out that mind? Whatever political power, whatever economic power, and even if your mother and father make a scene every morning, it does not budge. Even when mother and father kidnap one and say they will feed one well and make one live well, why can one not come here where it is hard, so that whenever there is a chance, one runs away, and one goes about fleeing lest one be caught again—why is that? Why is that? Go! Go, all of you! (“We dislike that.”) Who made it so? (“God.”) It is not so. I made it so. You yourselves became so. It is not that someone made it so. One became so oneself. When one gives fertilizer, the giving is not the problem; one must absorb the fertilizer and grow oneself.
You know well where you must go for strength to live to come out, where you must go for vigor to come out. You know where the vital force is. Whether one is alive…. One must come to Belvedere, and when the Teacher speaks, strength comes out, but however great a church one goes to, such strength does not come out. Is that so? (“Yes.”) So there is no need to sympathize. Since they say it is good themselves, what can one do? Yet the one mistaken fact one has discovered is that if one compares the I of old and the I of now, one can know that one has unmistakably grown differently. Is that so? (“Yes.”)
Even so, have the eyes changed? Has the nose changed?
Has the mouth changed? All such things are the same. The thinking has changed. If one only takes up this club and strikes, there is nothing that is not smashed; and if this pierces with a whoosh, there is nothing it cannot pierce; and if one treads, there is nothing that is not smashed. One holds such strength. Is gold gold only if it is big? Is a small thing not gold? Even though small, it is gold. That is why you must consider.
That is why I say, centering upon this, it becomes three hundred and sixty degrees. The Unification Church is such a thought. What is individual completion—it is three hundred and sixty degrees centering upon the individual. Three hundred and sixty degrees centering upon the family and three hundred and sixty degrees centering upon the tribe, people, nation, and world. Three hundred and sixty degrees is having gone and come again. What that is is that the beginning and the end are the same. So we must fit the individual to this and fit the family to this. Yet if this goes as it pleases like this, and this becomes like this, it is a great matter, a great matter.
So the Unification Church is here, and here is above, and this is the road. Seen from here, the world is all one. So upon the foundation of individual completion, family completion is connected, and upon the foundation of family completion, tribal completion is connected, and ethnic completion too is connected, taking tribal completion as its foundation, and national completion too is connected, taking ethnic completion as its foundation, and world completion too is connected, taking national completion as its foundation. It crosses over to higher-dimensional stages in this way.
Then if there is a small fence in your family, this stands in the stead of the world. Is that not so?
That is the Teacher’s way of thinking. A small family centering upon oneself too is exactly 360 degrees. So I see it as standing in the stead of the world. That is the center and the standard. Because I do not move, the family centering upon me, the people centering upon me, the nation centering upon me, the world centering upon me….
If all turn like this, they turn together. This does not turn as it pleases. It is a formula that everything turns like this. The shape of the turn is the same. Up to the world's age, it all turns the same.
Whether one came into the Unification Church twenty years ago or came in twenty years later, the activity is the same. One suffers to death. One turns like this. It is the same with the Teacher. Yesterday I slept only one hour and forty minutes. I do not even know whether I slept. And the day before yesterday I sat in a chair and stayed up all night. It is the same. Connecting the family from me, together, together, together, together, one moves until this world all turns together and becomes the same speed. This is the thought of the Unification Church. Why must it be so? Spring must come the same everywhere. In spring’s coming, it carries on the same history as that in which the hot days of old support it and everything is connected. So everything becomes spring and crosses over to summer. This is the principle.
Seen in this way, what sort of process, what sort of stage is Yankee Stadium? Is it the national standard or the world standard? (“The world standard.”) Then have you all kicked away the nation and come out as far as the world? (“No.”) Do you consider yourselves to be citizens of America, or do you consider yourselves to be citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, higher than citizens of America? (“We think of ourselves as citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven.”) Then which is genuine? Which feels real? (“Citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven.”) That is why, even if one tells them to go back to America, they cannot go back. Let us break through the world, break through the world. If one looks at the Teacher’s one generation, how far has he come out—he has come up this much.
Seen in Terms of Cultural History, the Only Body That Can Greet an Ideal Spring Is the Unification Church
Then when the Yankee Stadium rally is over, where does one go?
One must break through this and cross over. That is why it becomes decisive that, in substance, only the Unification Church can hold the expectation of the world hereafter. In America, of course. The young people of America who until now said, “Because we are a first-rate people, wherever in the world we go we can boast of our subjectivity,” have now come to fall to the ground and are making a scene with their heads buried; but if one could go out to the world from here, even if one told them to stay here, they would not stay—they would all cross over that way. It is so arranged.
That is why, once one raises a wave, that wave all becomes ripples so that ripples rise throughout the whole of America, throughout the whole world, throughout the whole democratic world, even to the communist sphere. Seen in this way, is the stone of the Unification Church big or small? (“Big.”) Then does it fall from a high place, or is it lifted from a low place and quietly set down? It comes falling from a high place, from that peak of God. Does it come falling from what you think in your bellies? (“From a high place.”) It falls from the highest place. The higher the place one falls from, the more the acceleration is doubled with time. Then how fast would it fall? Would the ripples be bigger than New York? One must do it with a crash so that, before the water that fell and scattered joins again, one can look right down to the bottom. In the midst of that I stood. And next, when the water goes “crash,” I go “whoosh” and rise.
So when it falls, we attach a line—we attach a rubber line before God, and the stronger the waves and the wind, the more we rise and can go just so far as the world. (Laughter. Applause.) That wave, those ripples, will sweep the world. Because God must carry on such a play, to prepare for it, He made a test of Reverend Moon’s wave once throughout the whole world this past March.
Then, between that wave and our wave, which was pushed out? Were we pushed in, or pushed out? Because of the explosion incident in France, did we develop or retreat? (“We developed.”) How has America become now? The Tarrytown incident too all came out in the weeklies, and they made a scene, did they not? The more they make an uproar, does Reverend Moon gradually grow smaller or grow bigger? How is it? (“He grows bigger.”)
Then what will you do if Reverend Moon is not there? All of you, hold such nerve as this: “If only the Teacher were not there, I should like to do it once, but because the Teacher is there, I cannot do it.” If only the Teacher were not there; wherever in the world I go, I would once…. (Applause.) So what becomes of it? In this way, let us raise a boom that moves the world. From here the angle is small. How small is this? The further one goes, the bigger it becomes. The further the Unification Church goes out, the bigger it becomes.
So when I sent missionaries this time, when I sent missionaries to a hundred and twenty-seven nations, I said, “You are all seed, seed! So you absolutely cannot come back.” So now, even while suffering, they are simply like this. “However deep and rough the ground may be, the root will dig in and go. And so, absorbing nutrients, I will grow”—they think so. They absorb nutrients there and grow. Even in a rock there are nutrients for me to grow on.
Thinking in this way, in this time when, seen in terms of cultural history, the frigid sphere of civilization sweeps the world, if there is such a body and a world representative tribe and people that can greet a new ideal spring, the conclusion comes out that there can be nothing apart from the company of the Unification Church.
The tropical sphere of civilization of the past perished too, and the temperate sphere of civilization will perish too, and the frigid sphere of civilization too cannot escape the destiny of perishing. Yet the standard of that civilization, which, within Heaven’s Will, greets the spring-season civilization and sets out, will eternally not perish. (Applause.)
In the 1980s, the Unification Church Will Greet the Kingdom of Heaven of Spring, centering upon God
The members of the Unification Church have until now, if possible, simply pretended to be dead. They pretended to be dead and stayed still. Like a dullard…. Yet now that spring has come, it will begin to grow. Now all under heaven become our age. And so when the 1980s come, when twenty-one years, the Third Seven-Year Course, have passed, from then it is summer, so wherever one goes it will be green, and wherever one goes it will bloom wide open. Do you wish to greet a new spring? (“Yes.”) How much? How much? As if mad! Now if I begin to laugh, the people of the whole world laugh. And so, seeing the world laugh, God begins to laugh. Even God begins to laugh, and God too, as if mad, goes “Ha—.” One is dying at seeing God laugh. God too opens His mouth and laughs, and the people of the world too must all open their mouths and laugh, and only then does one become one. Yet when one asks whether there has been anyone who has met a God who can receive the laughter of the whole world and rejoice, there has not been. When God is glad and laughs “Ha ha ha,” the world goes “Ha ha ha,” and if there are noses, they go in and out and quiver and go “Hee hee hee”…. When God goes “Ha ha ha,” you too must go “Ha ha ha” together, and only then are you friends. (Applause.)
Only when it becomes so—think of a world in which all the birds of heaven and earth sing spring songs, and the grass too sings spring songs, and the grasshoppers and butterflies too all sing spring songs and dance and keep rhythm. How glad would God be? Then what would become of this globe? The globe is somewhat tilted, is it not? Why is it tilted so unpleasantly? It ought to be straight.
When you draw the sun, you draw it round and color it bright red, but these days how do they draw it? They draw eyebrows on the sun like this, and draw a mouth like this, and draw a sun with a smiling face. Heaven and earth will laugh. Then, because we human beings are a microcosm, even the cells laugh. Even the hair will dance, and everything will be so. In that way, in spring, love comes seeking.
That is why, as for why the power of love is strong, it is strong because all the cells act with a power that has become one. So the power of love cannot be blocked even by the universe. The universe moves. One must say, “With these eyes I shall see that world and die. With this nose I shall smell the fragrance of that world and die. With these ears I shall live hearing the spring song of the universe that comes sounding from that world in which the Kingdom of Heaven has been accomplished.” In that world, because one sees all things dancing and eats things that rejoice, one will through eternal joy not grow old but live long.
A person who lives laughing while looking at the partner of love does not grow old. Only this power of love will make the universe a flower garden of the love of spring. And so the time is not far off when one sets out toward a new Kingdom of Heaven of spring, of peace, centering upon a trans-ethnic God.
Yet the problem has arisen of whether this barrier will be flung wide open by this that we attack with or whether a hole will be bored. If you would become bullets, only a pointed bullet bores a hole well. Even alone, one can pierce with a whoosh.
Will you be that, or will you, on the contrary, become a bullet of short shape? Which bullet will you become?
If this becomes like this, even a straight line is short. Will you become a straight line bigger than this? There are three kinds like this. Which will you do? This one is left over. Will you do this? If one does this, there remains something to fight over again, but if one does this, there is nothing whatsoever. Which will you take? Which of the three will you take? (“We will take the straight line.”) Will you take the straight one? (“Yes.”) Really? (“Yes.”)
Then the Teacher is not needed, is he? (“That is not so.”) As for leaders, they are all the same. It means that they are all the same. If one is here, I am the leader, but if it becomes like this, are they not all the same? Then a leader is not needed, is he? Can that be? (“No.”) You fellows, why “no”? If the Teacher loves you all like children, would it be good if you became more excellent than the Teacher, or would he say, “Hey, you fellows! You must not become more excellent than I. If you do, you get a rap on the head.” (“We wish to become more excellent than the Teacher…”) Then where would the Teacher go? He would go to the North Pole or the South Pole, and if there is nowhere else, he would go to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Even so, I have resolved that I will absolutely never think, “These wretched fellows are driving me out?” It is not only a resolve; the fact is so. They say Reverend Moon rules the world, that he has come to America and made a scene; but it is not that I think only Reverend Moon’s thought is foremost—it is all that I tell you to become. I tell you to become more than that. Do you dislike it? (“It is good.”) Which do you like, your father coming first, or you coming first? (“Our….”) Is not your original mind so? Your original mind! Which is better, your father’s wallet being full of money, or my wallet having money in it? Is it not better to have money in my wallet? That is the original mind. That can be done.
When one comes to live in someone's nation, since I have seen such sweeping changes here in America, if one has learned this much ability and everything, sweeping one nation or so is no problem. If one takes a cut branch and plants it, I too become the same tree; and if one takes the fruit and plants it in any ground whatever, it becomes the same tree. It can become a better tree. Have you such confidence?
Will you call the father’s spring day the father’s spring day, or call it my spring day? What will you do? One must enjoy my spring; would one enjoy the father’s spring? (“My spring….”) The fact is so. If you hold such a thought as, “Let us enjoy my spring worldwide. My spring has come. The world is my spring. Through me….” the Unification Church will sweep the world instantly. The world will, instantly, all become our side. Does it seem so?
Because the Spring Season Is the Season of Women, It Is Principled That Women Should Greet the New Spring
Now look at the world ten years hence; what it will become. Ten years hence the democratic world too will be a complete mess, and ten years hence the communist world too will be a complete mess. Yet the world of the Unification Church ten years hence is not a mess. Once one completes the individual, it is family completion, tribal completion…. It does not collapse but keeps developing. It goes in a straight line. In the past it went up and down, zigzagging, carrying on all sorts of plays. Yet now it is a straight line. Is that mistaken or not? (“It is unmistakable.”)
That is why, that one has taken part in the ranks that advance toward Yankee Stadium, raising a flag, saying that one will appear as the first protagonist greeting spring when a universal spring day, a new spring that heaven and earth can greet, comes seeking—this is an astonishing, cosmic-historical miracle. The command to advance must be a world-historical command, and the speed of the advancing ranks must be the speed of world-historical ranks. That goes without saying.
Is New York now beginning to collapse or not? (“It is beginning to collapse.”) Here we must resurrect all of New York anew. Now, so let us make it a New York that has greeted a new spring. Since we members of the Unification Church have greeted spring, that environment too must become spring. One makes it so. The spring-greeting feast of all America and of the citizens of New York is the Yankee Stadium rally. Do you understand what that means? (“Yes.”)
Going as far as the Washington rally, one greets summer, and next, on the day one goes as far as the Moscow rally, winter too crosses over to spring and to summer and the world becomes one world. I see it so. Now, so will you become the prince of the greeting of spring? What will you become? (“Prince.”) Prince—well, do you like “prince”? (“Yes.”) Will the women win, or will the men win? Is it a prince or a princess? (“Prince.”) Princess, princess! (“Prince.” [from the men]) Why is that? The Principle is so, the Principle. In restoring, it is so arranged that the woman greets spring first. (Applause.)
The women of the Unification Church are the strongest. They are stronger than the men. “They are stronger than God. They are stronger than the Teacher”—it must be so. I like such news. Otherwise one falls again. Can that be? (“Yes.”) Then what will the men do? Does the woman bear the child, or does the man bear it? When one says singing, does a woman suddenly come to mind, or a man? Is a woman’s singing voice higher, or a man’s? (“A woman’s.”) A man can only be something like a bass. “Woo wa wa” (Laughter) and it does not go up. What is high and pointed is, after all, a woman. Which hurts more, a man’s stabbing or a woman’s stabbing? (“A woman’s.”) That is so. Even in laughing, it is women who have all sorts of phenomena. They go “Hae hae hae" and "Ho ho ho”; but a man has only one, “Heo heo heo.” (Laughter.)
Now then, is God a simple God or a diverse God? (“A diverse God.”) When one gives something, in liking it, a man simply says one word, “It is good,” but a woman—from the mouth, from the eyes…. (He imitated it.) Which is richer and more diverse in its expression of liking? In that sense, when one asks who wishes to greet spring first, men are dull, so they do not know spring well. It is sensitive women. As soon as spring comes, they already wish to go out. (Laughter.)
Now then, now that a universal spring is coming, will one greet spring only in the morning, only in the daytime, or at night too? (“At night too….”) Or will one do it on a moonlit night? Which night do you like better, a pitch-dark night or a moonlit night? (“A moonlit night.”) People who really love it go to a place where others cannot see and enjoy it. They like a pitch-dark night better. You must know that. So one must make a spring outing at night too.
That is why one must make a spring outing even while sleeping. Since it will not do not to sleep, let us greet spring even while sleeping. While sleeping, “Hmm hmm hmm”—let us greet spring even in dreams. And next, try rising and, pulling up the quilt, greeting spring even at night.
Who would refuse that?
If God sees it, He likes it; is there any other way? In spring there is nothing that does not laugh. Everything laughs. In spring the sky too comes down low, and all four directions seek to embrace me snugly, and it is a time when one wishes to sing even while sleeping.
Therefore, spring is the season of women. Autumn is the season of men. Because the fallen world until now has been a time of creating men, women have all been without names, and men have moved the world; but in the new ideal age hereafter, women take the lead.
At the Yankee Stadium Rally, Neither East nor West Must Lose
Then where must spring come to in this world first? Is it the West or the East? Does the West go first, or does the East go first? (“The East.”) Why? Why is that? Why have these Western fellows not made the West go first and the East fall behind, but come forth making the East go first and the West fall behind? Have you thought about that? Why is that? That is the reasoning of heaven and earth.
That is why the conclusion comes out that in the end the West must follow the East. So, spring from where? From the East. Then where did today’s Unification Church come from? Did it come out from America? (“Korea.”) When one says “Korea,” in English it becomes the word “career,” does it not? All of you, do you like Korea? (“Yes.”) Do you like the East? (“Yes.”) Why? Why? Because Reverend Moon is there. If Reverend Moon were not there, you would say, “What is the East or Korea or anything?” Is that so or not? (“It is so.”)
Seen in this way, one way or another, in a day or two the West too follows. So one must become one. That there is such a movement by which the East too becomes spring, and indeed the West too and America too can become spring, is a cosmic-historical blessed event. It is what God likes, and what our ancestors liked, and what the humanity living upon this earth today likes, and we say, let us make the tremendous cosmic-historical greeting of spring that our descendants like.
Then will you greet spring well or not? (“We will do it well.”) Will you be glad and go “Ha ha ha,” or will you be glad to death while shedding sweat? (“We will be glad to death.”) One must be glad to the point of being out of one’s senses.
So one must search out every alley of New York. There is nowhere that spring does not go. Can one say, “Leaving out the Harlem area, and leaving out the Spanish-speaking people too, let us go only to the white people”? (“No.”)
If an American does so, that American too is a mistaken fellow; and if a white person does so, these white people too are mistaken fellows. That is not a greeting of spring. That is why spring must go everywhere. Since one has come holding the flag of spring and holding the news of spring, let us make it so that one can make a normal greeting of spring, and will you too do it? Let those who wish to do so raise their hands. Ah! Beautiful! Wonderful! (Laughter.)
Until now the twenty days we promised the other day have passed. Last night too I gathered the Japanese members and declared, “This Yankee Stadium rally is the responsibility of the Japanese members.” Why is that? Because spring must come from the East. The Western people welcome that, do they not? The white people, the American people—do they welcome it or not? (“They do not welcome it.”) Then what will you do? You are the masters, so will you play the part of master, or play the part of guest? (“Master.”)
Then are you the guests, or are the Japanese people the guests? (“The Japanese people are the guests.”) If the Japanese people, who are the guests, sweep it all up, you do not qualify for masters. Will that be so? (“No.”) The Japanese people rise at five while the American people rise at eight. Is that all right even so? (“No.”) Since the American people are tall, can they not go in one step the distance the Japanese go in three steps? Yesterday I said, “You Japanese people have no cars, so you must go about riding car number eleven.” Yet the American friends have cars, so if they go “vroom” in the morning, they would go in ten minutes a distance the Japanese take an hour for…. (Laughter.) Since you have cars and so on, can you not do it slowly? (“No.”)
So, when proceeding with a car here and proceeding with car number eleven arrive at the same place, who is the great one? (“The Japanese people.”) Then will you throw away all the cars you have? Can you run without cars? (“Yes.”) The Japanese people have practised until now, and you have not been able to practise, so must you not run? Can you run?
So unless one makes several times the effort of the Japanese people, one loses. You may perhaps say, “The Japanese people cannot even speak properly; what is there about beating the Americans—we will win,” but do not even say such words. If one does that, one loses. On the day one loses, what a sight that is! That is why last night too I asked the American people to challenge. Challenge. Will you lose here, or will you win? (“We will win.”)
It has already become ten past two. I came saying I would talk for only two hours, and since I have gone ten minutes over, Mother is now saying, “Why does he not keep his promise?”—so there is no help for it and I must stop talking. (“That will not do.”) Mother’s belly is full now. (Laughter.) You are unmarried, so you do not know the circumstances well, but I do. Do you (to the women) sympathize? (“Yes.”) These (to the men) are not people. (Laughter.)
So know it thus…. America was an advanced nation that led the democratic world, and in the Greater East Asia War, it fought Japan too and won, so what is there to lose here? Again, because the Japanese people lost at that time, they say that this time at least we must win. So I say, try it. (Applause. He laughed.)
Will you say, “The Teacher must support us; since the Teacher is an Eastern person, he takes the side of Japan,” or will you say, “From a normal position I will support the Japanese people too”? Which is it? If I say, “Japan, do well,” what will you do? One must say, I will do double." If we fight more and more fiercely, will one kick more fiercely or not? (“One will kick.”) That is a good thing, a good thing. So will you lose to the Japanese people or not? (“We will not lose.”) Will the Japanese people lose or not? (“They will not lose.”) I shall watch. I shall simply look on like this.
If One Were to Be Victorious at the Yankee Stadium Rally, Carry On Organized Activity
That is why, what one does from today is Kamiyama! From now, urgently, the organizational arrangement…. There are only forty-four days left now. To extend the victory of the Madison Square Garden rally and be victorious at the Yankee Stadium rally too, one cannot but carry on still more brilliantly.
Now the whole ought to be anxious about the Yankee Stadium rally, and that they are not is a great matter. That they are not concerned is a great matter. Even taking ten times the trouble that was taken at the time of the Madison Square Garden rally would not be enough, and yet they are behaving more comfortably than at that time. Then one cannot even gather to the standard of the Madison Square Garden rally.
All of you say you cannot witness because there are no handbills, no leaflets, but what are leaflets? My fist and my eyes and my body are all a billboard and a leaflet. We have no need of a Bicentennial Seal or a design or commemorative advertising or anything. My spirit, my hands, and my actions, and my mouth surpass a poster. Pour your passion into that. Try doing it as if mad. Even if the activity is painful, it is good. Let them criticize. It will have more effect than their not criticizing. From today, passing through New York, one must firm up one’s heart once more and act, holding a firm sphere of heart. From now on, one rises at half past five. One must rise at that time.
If one sleeps only two hours a day, it is enough. Sleeping like others and doing like others, when will one restore this world? Holding such a thought, from now on, make the organizational arrangements. From today, arrange an overall organization like that of the Madison Square Garden rally, and let Kamiyama direct from headquarters…. The officers are to hold a meeting in one place in the morning and receive reports in the evening, and next are to contact the Teacher even by telephone and, without fail, report! Has Neil come? Reiner and all of them must live in one place, eating and sleeping. Eating and sleeping at one table. Rising in the morning and setting up a plan, until returning in the evening, everything…. The highest officers are to receive reports and give detailed instructions every day and set up the standard of a victorious Yankee Stadium rally. Running about here and there, more than at the time of the Yoido World Rally for the Salvation of the Nation, one cannot but in this way digest the forty-four days from now as a victorious period.
As for Mike and all of them, one must gather all the people who were working at Belvedere, and this time all cooperate. There is no need for a person who does not move before the Teacher. So let him clear right out. Let him go elsewhere. It is the same with the wives of the American members too. If the husbands have assembled, the wives follow along; and if they would follow along, they should follow along to do the same work. The woman must do more than the man. In the period of the history of Restoration she must do more. And one must organize so that when this gathering ends, one can clear up afterward so completely that there is not a trace left.
It is the same with Mr. Pak. One must gather everything together and make a total attack. It is the same with the Teacher. I say I will absolutely not become a leader who is in your debt. I shall pass a busier life than you, and shall use my mind more than you, and shall agonize more than you.
I should like to go directly to the middle of New York, but there are many enemies. They think that if only Reverend Moon is killed, this Unification Church will be smashed and the problems of America will all disappear. I am receiving a considerable number of such reports. That is why it is disadvantageous for the Teacher to appear before the multitude. It is disadvantageous as a matter of strategy. Do you think so? (“It is so.”)
Therefore you must do it in my stead. You must know that you have the duty to do a hundred times, a thousand times more than the Teacher’s appearing in the streets and directing. In exchange, the Teacher will without fail be standing at the head in the spiritual world. So now I am thinking of not holding the Belvedere gathering either.
Now it is setting out at seven. Do you understand what that means? Eh? (“Yes.”) Yet if the cleaning work (소제작업, 掃除作業) begins, one must set out at half past six and get there by half past seven. For forty days one does not die even without sleeping. One does not die even without eating. So there must be no objection.
In such things, you, the American members, must set the tradition…. Now look. In this work, one must set up a world-historical tradition. That is why, in setting up a historical tradition, we must solemnly declare. You must know that you must declare your accord.
Now, will you yourselves decide? (“Yes.”) Do it. In the name of God! In the name of humanity! In the name of True Parents! I ask that you be those who certainly are victorious. Will you do so? Answer. (“Yes.”)
