We know well that by settling down in a position of present reality, a new history cannot be accomplished. This is because, in a position that conforms to the currents of thought or the trends of the existing world, no new revolution or new movement of renewal can arise.

Accordingly, only when one completely denies the currents of thought and the trends of the existing world and, from that position, holds hope for a new future and furnishes new achievements, can new development be woven. When we look at the process of history, no one can deny such a fact.

The providential history of Restoration and Heaven’s secret envoy

Just as the development of history in this fallen world today is so, our providential course is the same. This providential course is not in a position whose direction is the same as that of the satanic world and whose content communes with it; both its direction and its content are opposite. Seen from such a position, how difficult it must be to hold a new point of origin and furnish a new system and rebuild an environment that can exert influence!

We must know that, in passing through history, there is a period of inner struggle that cannot be revealed until a certain standard that can exert influence is accomplished. When that inner struggle comes to possess a foundation that can exert influence upon all the important figures of the age and upon the statesmen who move that nation, it will be able to renew that whole nation into a new field. If it exerts influence over a narrow scope, it will be one village, or one family, or, going further, one individual.

Seen in terms of the Providence of Restoration, although God has until now presented such a movement of renewal to the evil world, its influence has never reached society and the nation directly. Always an individual first receives that influence and from there carries out a movement of gathering the family, and thus history has been developed until now. This is the traditional course the individual must walk in the process of providential history today.

When we behold the religious world of today, which has thus come forth through the individual, from the family to the clan, the tribe, the people, the nation, the worldwide standard, we can see that any religion whatsoever has woven a history of struggle. In weaving such a history, they did not appear openly and struggle, but, while concealing themselves, being driven by the environment or unable to escape a constrained environment and thus unable to use the factors of development, they came forth furnishing one public bearing.

When we consider such facts, the position of a providential person in charge who bears responsibility is never a free one. It is not a position in which one can reveal oneself, not a position in which one can set forth one’s own assertions, not a position in which one can act as one pleases.

One must conceal entirely all the original conditions of one’s own conduct and newly present, before the people one contacts and faces in that social environment, conditions more beneficial than those of the actual social environment. One must by all means form relationships with those people and, standing in a position where the inner heart can commune, connect one’s own identity and develop. What has come forth in this way is the historical course of the Providence of Restoration.

When we look back on our historical forebears, they were at all times in the position of a secret envoy — that is, in a position of concealing and not revealing their own identity. We must know that they were people who strove infinitely in such an environment in order to pioneer their own foothold, and passed on.

Seen from such a viewpoint, it is God’s Providence of Restoration and Providence of salvation to overturn this nation and this world entirely into Heaven’s possession, upon this stage where Satan today has occupied this world and holds countless sovereign nations. That is why, whenever one figure bearing such a will of the Providence appears, any nation whatsoever, any society whatsoever, comes to stand in a position where it cannot but oppose. Therefore, a person who has entered a position of being opposed — in other words, a person who steps forth taking responsibility for the Providence — has at all times had the heart (심정) of a secret envoy.

We must know that such a person has carried out the mission of a secret envoy dispatched by God to an enemy nation, that is, a secret envoy who takes responsibility for the sovereignty of that nation and decides the destiny that sovereignty may take.

That is why Christianity, which entered Rome, likewise passed through such a historical process. We can see through history that when the action of an individual secret envoy was presented to the family-level scope, the clan-level scope, and the people-level scope, this became the beacon of a new revolution in that society and could establish a new nation. This is an undeniable fact. Seen thus, we can know that for religion itself to develop until now, the responsibility of the secret envoy behind it has been immense.

We must know the fact that those who left behind a clan on Heaven’s side in order to fulfill the mission of a secret envoy dispatched to an enemy nation are people who fulfilled their responsibility before Heaven in that age, and those who did not are people who did not fulfill their responsibility before Heaven.

The distress of the secret envoy

Our Unification Church too, in a position of shouldering the whole responsibility of God’s Providence of Restoration, has likewise walked the same road of destiny.

Moreover, the Teacher himself, who presented such a responsibility and took responsibility for the whole, was the same. Though he was born upon the one foundation called the Republic of Korea and born as one of the same Baedal people, he could not set out from a position of receiving the trust of this nation and this people. He truly carried out social activity from a lonely position, concealing all the circumstances of his inner heart.

If, in Heaven’s setting up and unfolding of its strategy, one cannot overcome the environment that becomes a distress and develop one’s own foothold, one cannot fulfill the immense responsibility of determining the destiny of the homeland. That is why, whenever one looks toward the immense mission for the homeland, the attitude and conduct of one’s own person, bearing the mission of a secret envoy, cannot but be grave.

To give an example, at present the North Korean puppet regime is sending spies down into South Korea. In order for these spies to be sent south, they must first receive training for living as spies. Then what must they first acquire when they receive training? They must acquire all the customs of South Korea. They must speak the language of South Korea, and in living there they must learn the way of life of South Korea. Their destiny hangs on this — that the matter of their own life and death is determined by how well they adapt to life in South Korea.

That is why how one makes oneself able to be absorbed, from the environment of living all the way to every specialized field, is the principle of spy training. In speech or in habits of living, there must not be even the slightest aspect that appears awkward or strange to people who have lived in South Korea until now. One must live expressing an ordinary and commonplace environment just as it is within one’s own living.

In the North there are the customs of the people of the North, and the living habits of the people of the North, and the social system of the North itself, and so such things may appear in some environment without one’s knowing it. Nevertheless, how difficult it must be to remove all these things and to act as a person of another country or a person of another region! One cannot but exercise doubled and tripled caution. We can infer and know that it is the position of spies that even in performing one action, or in speaking one word, they cannot but think and take care two or three times over.

If that conduct or way of speaking is a little different from others’, or if living habits are a little different, that becomes one clue by which their identity may be exposed. Thus it is the life of an agent that one must live in a place different from the living environment in which one has lived. If one is to live such a life, how great must the distress be on the inner plane? And how much training must one undergo to become steeped in such a life? We too are living such a life.

The persons in charge of our Unification Church in the provinces today are in a somewhat more open position now, but in the early days of old they could not but live in a position truly like that of an agent, like a secret envoy who has received a special command. Then what must one do to live such a life? One must not hold an attitude of setting forth one’s own assertions and seeking to apply them to the whole of that province.

Yet when we consider all the past affairs that the persons in charge of our Unification Church have walked until now, when we ask whether they lived such a life, they did not. As soon as they arrived in that province, they laid out entirely what was in their inner hearts according to their own convictions, and, regardless of how the people around them thought, they conveyed the words from a position of running ahead alone. We cannot but recall once again that such conduct brought great hindrance to our activity.

In such an environment, paying the price of every sacrifice, we have now come to stand upon a foundation on which we can be recognized even by the statesmen of the Republic of Korea. You must know that, until we came to stand upon such a foundation, you yourselves may have come forth from an irresponsible position, but for the Teacher, who took responsibility for the whole, there was infinite distress and there was also much anguish. You act freely in the provinces, but you must know the fact that the Teacher, who takes responsibility for the whole at the center, is even now unfolding a battle within a framework of living that cannot cross beyond the standard of the mission of a secret envoy.

The conviction one must hold for the liberation of the homeland

We have sent off the 1960s and met the new 1970s. Now we must set the Republic of Korea before God’s will, and we must liberate the homeland God desires. We must liberate the homeland of a new humankind. In this sense, when we set our carrying out of responsibility before us and criticize coolly, we cannot but reflect on what sort of attitude of living we have woven until now.

Did we shoulder the mission of a secret envoy of Heaven? Or did we shoulder the mission of a special envoy? Because until now we have acted as we pleased, forgetting that it is a world of enemies and as if taking responsibility for the task of a special envoy standing in place of that whole nation, we have paid an indescribable price of sacrifice here.

Then what must we do hereafter in order to develop the will of Providence, which can reach as far as Asia, centering on the whole territory of the Republic of Korea? This too cannot be done without passing through the road of responsibility, bearing the mission of a secret envoy, which cannot be revealed. We must know that such exceedingly difficult problems lie across the road ahead.

Then how shall we guard against this?

How shall we resolve this? When we set such questions before us, the question is how I myself furnish a character by which I can live in that society. Moreover, the question is not what sort of new mission one has shouldered, but how one attains the purpose of that mission. Here lies the point of resolution.

Accordingly, however great a mission and great a responsibility one has been entrusted with, when the carrying out of that responsibility does not reach front and back and left and right and bear an effective result, those who shouldered the mission too must be criticized.

Therefore, what you must resolve this morning, as you now meet the 1970s anew centering on the will, is this: “My body has received the special command of a secret envoy from God.” That is why you must know the fact that the influence exerted upon that environment through one wrongful act of your own is not confined to yourself alone but is connected to the vast and tremendous continent called the homeland.

Among the persons in charge of our Unification Church today — that is, the district leaders, regional leaders, subdistrict leaders, church leaders and so on, those who in the eyes of the world may be called the core personnel and the elite personnel of the Unification Church — how many indeed are there who can acknowledge themselves to be beings called for the mission of a special envoy of Heaven for the liberation of the homeland and bearing their shouldered responsibility in the field?

Seen from this viewpoint, we today, in the arena of passing through such an officers’ training session in the first year of the 1970s, must once again reflect on the past and pledge anew and make firm our own spirit. Only then can we pioneer a road for weaving without difficulty a foundation of happiness in the 1970s.

Nevertheless, if in our conduct or in every respect we cannot furnish such an attitude of living, you must know the fact that in the 1970s too a destiny may be placed before us in which we cannot but walk a road of suffering again.

That is why, if you are a person in charge of one district, you must hold the conviction that the district itself can hereafter become one matrix that can stand in place of the homeland. Also, you must hold the conviction that even if all our regions in the three-thousand-li peninsula were to disappear and only your one region remained, from here you would stand in place of the district and stand in place of the nation and prepare a framework for the liberation of the homeland.

You must go forward holding the conviction that, to accomplish an eternal world, you will establish a new framework from here and make an origin of glory that can reach the whole of the three thousand li.

The responsibility the secret envoy must bear and the attitude of living he must take

For that, it cannot be done without passing through the age of the mission of a secret envoy. Only when the mission of the secret envoy is concluded — in other words, when one receives testimony in that environment, and that environment trusts one and believes one and comes to stand in a position of being able to consult with one — can one at last carry out the mission of a special envoy standing in place of Heaven. But if, in a position where that environment does not believe one, one steps forth into that environment setting forth one’s own authority and the authority of one’s own nation, the more one steps forth, the more resistance is compounded and the arrows of rejection fly.

That is why, through this training session, with what heart must you go to your regions hereafter? You must know the fact that you have been called here in order to receive the command of a new mission of a secret envoy, and must pledge deeply in your inner hearts. And thus you must go to your own regions and conclude the mission of the secret envoy. When you have pioneered the environment and can achieve absolute authority, there at last, together with your fellow workers, you can carry out the mission of a special envoy of Heaven. Yet because the persons in charge of the Unification Church forgot the age of the mission of the secret envoy and sought to carry out the mission of a special envoy, our church has until now received much persecution in its development.

The Teacher too, who is guiding you, still holds the heart of a secret envoy even now. How does one lay a foundation on which one can be trusted before the power of the nation? Only when such a time comes can one carry out the mission of a special envoy.

If one acts without laying that foundation and without passing through the stage of the mission of the secret envoy, a breakdown will without fail break out. One must always act bearing in mind the fact that not only one’s own life but all one’s relationships before and behind and the destiny of the nation lie across this, so that a result of calamity before the whole cannot be avoided.

In the process of carrying out the mission of the secret envoy, one must be more solemn than in the mission of a special envoy and, pledging doubly and triply in one’s inner heart, strive so that one’s own identity is not exposed to that environment.

And thus one must, by presenting there a condition that can give benefit before them, make a foundation on which they can comply with one. One must unfold an indirect strategy rather than a direct one. That is, one must wage a battle of examining individual by individual and connecting them.

After unfolding such a strategy, one must raise them to a standard where they can share life and death with oneself. To express one’s conviction from such a position and bring the common purpose to fruition is the responsibility that must be carried out as a secret envoy.

Nevertheless, among our Unification Church family members today, there is no one who carries out such responsibility. Because you have not formed such relationships, your steps are always flimsy, and you have no foothold on which to tread and stand.

What we must consider through this training session is that we must not be satisfied with the standard on which these people, centering on the Republic of Korea, trust us, but must know that there are many circumstances of inner heart that God has not yet been able to unfold here, and must develop and unfold this.

We must not forget that we ourselves have not yet passed through this field of the mission of the secret envoy.

We must not become assimilated by even one word in that environment, as though living the life of an agent. In acting, too, we must not be assimilated. Setting the time before us, we must be able to be recognized in that environment as people who can leave something behind before the whole — before that village if a village, that region if a region, that district if a district — and who present many matters that can be of benefit. One must set up a standard beyond the field of the mission for which one must take responsibility as a secret envoy. From such a position one must give commands and resolve and promise and unfold a new movement. You must, from a position of knowing yet not being able to teach, send away all the people with whom you have formed relationships centering on yourself until now.

Then what is the attitude a secret envoy must take?

Whether one lives or dies is not the question. A secret envoy is always under the threat of life and death, and death always blocks his way. So he is one who stands in place of God, in a position of having trodden upon death at the borderline of life and death. Those who have crossed the thirty-eighth parallel may know that feeling, but the secret envoy must take a firm attitude of living by which he can tread down the foothold of death in a world of adventure like crossing a national border.

Likewise, in conveying new words today, we must not convey the words alone. First, one must be an example on the human plane, an example on the plane of living, an example in every plane of conduct. That is, in that village one must be an example before them in relations of high and low and in everything. In no respect must one be inferior to them. One must lay a foundation such that they can say, “That person is truly a necessary person in our village,” and such that, when one seeks to depart, the village will unite as one and wish one to go on living just as one is. Without laying such a foundation, it is exceedingly difficult for us to attain our purpose from our position.

Have you lived such a life?

Have you lived such a life before the people among whom you were born, for two years, three years, ten years, as though they were one day? Responsibility does not end with completing the mission of a secret envoy.

If there is such a person dispatched with a special command to attain the purpose of the homeland among that people or nation, he will not attain that mission in ten or twenty years.

Moreover, there will also be people who cannot fulfill that mission in their own generation and must set up a successor and hand down the mission and depart.

Therefore, centering on such a special command, one must always carry out one’s responsibility with an anxious heart, truly in a position like that of a living offering.

You must know that unless one becomes a person in charge who can unfold that responsibility and gather it up, it is impossible to accomplish one’s purpose as a secret envoy.

Seen from this viewpoint, one must be different in one’s attitude of living and in every other respect. One must know as a matter of course that what no one in that village can take responsibility for is one’s own responsibility, and be able to take responsibility for it.

If there is something for which one must be struck on behalf of that village, being struck is the quickest road by which a secret envoy can complete his responsibility. When one steps forth and is struck for the village’s sake and does not die, the whole village comes to submit.

Our bearing for meeting the liberation of the homeland

Those who go for Heaven’s sake today are secret envoys dispatched to the satanic world. There may be differences among individuals in great and small, wide and narrow, high and low, but the very living in which each is placed must not depart from the life of a secret envoy. Here the threat of life and death is always interposed. One slip and one is placed in such a position that the matter of eternal life is decided.

That is why, unless the notion of finding our homeland, which can sustain eternal life and can protect eternal life, is several hundred times stronger than that environment, one cannot live the life of a secret envoy.

Holding a heart that looks toward the glory of that homeland, one must be able to disregard one’s present position, thinking that when the grievance of the homeland is resolved all people will rejoice, and thinking that when a new history is founded and the one day of the liberation of the homeland is met, one’s own merit will be manifested.

Unless such a heart comes first, one cannot carry out the mission of a secret envoy. In other words, only when one’s heart can make the hope for the liberation of the homeland a thousand times and ten thousand times stronger than the hope of present reality can one overcome it and carry out the mission of a secret envoy, even at the cost of exchanging today’s life.

If, while taking such responsibility, one is sacrificed through an unforeseen accident, a new person in charge can be dispatched again to that place. Even though he has already died, there will arise people who can become his friends and can be on his side. Because he lived from a position of being an example, even though he was sacrificed, there remain people who can be on his side. As long as such people remain, God can send a substitute upon that foundation. But when one dies from a position where it is not so, however much he toiled there, it ends with that.

From such a position, what bearing must you furnish as you now meet the new age called the 1970s? The conviction for the liberation of the homeland must be burning in your breast higher than anything. In other words, you must feel the pride of having taken responsibility for this tremendous mission of becoming standard-bearers who build the homeland God has awaited for six thousand years, and of becoming pioneers as members of an elite corps standing at the vanguard.

You must hold the solemn sense of responsibility that you have shouldered a privileged mission which countless people who came and went desired to hold but could not hold even if they tried, a mission there is only one of and only this one time for.

Therefore the whole of your living — eating and sleeping and going and coming — must be for the founding of the homeland. How much must God be awaiting someone who steps forth saying that, as a secret envoy specially dispatched by God, he will carry out this mission with dignity and splendidly! Until now we have been driven wretchedly and chased wretchedly.

We must furnish a national foothold and present the content of the whole and establish that will of Heaven, which has never once been unfolded, that will by which the homeland can be established. Until now, that will has never once been established.

But now such a homeland can be established. That homeland has sovereignty, that homeland has territory, and that homeland has citizens. Also, the lineage of a single people is bound up there, and there is a history that no other people can have. For such a homeland we must carry out the mission of a secret envoy. The more quickly one completes such a mission oneself, the more the foundation of the liberation of the homeland draws near through oneself. Paying the price of toil today becomes the foundation on which the one day of the liberation of the homeland can be met sooner. Thinking of such facts, you must go forward with the resolve to live and complete the mission of a secret envoy. Otherwise, we cannot receive as our own the world-historical blessing and heavenly fortune that God can bring to us in the 1970s.

And so only by becoming a Unification Church that can be welcomed by the nation and by the citizens can we exert influence upon Asia from there. When our Unification Church laid a foothold and set out in Japan, the Japanese government at once made an issue of it, saying, “Where on earth did this come from?

If it came from Korea, how did it come?” They made an issue only of the content in which we had done wrong, without even considering the content in which we had done well. Then where did this content of wrongdoing come from? It is because we did not fulfill our responsibility. It is that, carrying out irresponsibly the fulfillment of responsibility we ought to have carried out, we brought about such a result.

The secret envoy must know how to wait for the time

What you must know this time is the conviction called “the secret envoy and the homeland.” You must go back holding this conviction called “the secret envoy and the homeland.”

If you have taken responsibility for one village, in order to restore that village quickly, you must go seeking the leading figures of that village. And then how will you exert influence? Unless you become a friend more precious to that person than any friend he has had until now, you cannot move him. Unless you stand in a position of being anxious for that village more than anyone, you cannot move the person in charge of that village.

In keeping with the customs of that village too, you must know them and keep them better than anyone in that village. Otherwise you cannot move that village. But when an opportunity comes by which one can cross one borderline, at that time one must carry out the mission of a special envoy. Truly one must then furnish authority and, reasoning things out, judge right and wrong and carry on the business of making them recognize what is right.

Because we today could not live such a life, there have been many side effects in the course we have passed through. You must know that, despite there having been many side effects, we could develop as we have today because God carried out the mission of the secret envoy on our behalf.

When one family member came, you did not treat that person well but rather sent him away with a wounded heart. You made him a person who all but vowed never to go to the Unification Church again. You must not forget the fact that when you did so, the spirit world carried out the mission of the secret envoy again in your place. When, because of one person’s fault, the spirit world is mobilized and cooperates, it absolutely cannot bring a good result. When God cooperates, the content of indemnity without fail remains in the satanic world. You must know that God’s cooperation is the history of grace that has appeared on the road of Providence today.

That is why you must not forget the fact that, when you cannot bear this grave responsibility, God sets up conditions of indemnity several times over in your place and is carrying out the work of the offering in order to have you conclude the mission of the secret envoy and gather up that environment.

When we look at you at present, the notion of self comes first. Even the district leaders are complaining while they work. Such a heart is sprouting. That is not the position a secret envoy must take. The secret envoy must be afraid lest he be revealed, and must take care lest he be revealed. Even though the environment has not yet become one in which my plan can be revealed one hundred percent, upon a person who does not fear his plan being revealed, the threat to life draws near.

Setting such matters before us, if you understand that what has been given to you is not the mission of a secret envoy for the homeland but a mission for your own success, you will perish. You must feel such a notion and engrave it in your blood, in your flesh. The Teacher dislikes appearing. Why? Because he knows that there still remain passes piled upon passes that must be crossed, and that there have been forebears in history who died without crossing the final pass.

Those who, facing a teacher who guides them holding such a heart, say this and that about personnel transfers are not laborers of Heaven. Silently, one must, of oneself, put down deep roots in the foundation of heart and wait for the day of spring. One must invest time and invest effort more than anything, for the sake of a deeply rooted value of life that can grow luxuriantly all at once when the day of spring comes, and in order to introduce one’s own capacity into the will. To wish to be revealed without doing so is like a tree without roots. A tree planted without roots simply withers away. Centering on such matters, you must once again analyze and criticize yourselves.

The road the secret envoy must walk

When you work as the person in charge of that province, if you use the authority of a person in charge and carelessly say “do this, do that,” you will receive the criticism of countless people.

How does one avoid such arrows of criticism?

This is the grave problem that must first of all be transcended by a person in charge holding any post whatsoever. Even in that moment one must carry out the mission of a secret envoy. In other words, at that time one must not reveal one’s identity but bury it.

That is why, even though one is displeased with the environment with which one is related and which one faces, one must not give the other party a displeasing impression. One never knows when that person may become an enemy. One must form affection with a person who may become an enemy. In forming affection, money is not the question. Can you exchange money for your life? Whatever one may be given, it cannot be exchanged for life. One must put up a fence to protect life.

For that, one must absolutely never sit comfortably and have others run errands while one is exalted. The mission of the secret envoy itself is what is important.

The question is whether, with an original attitude of living, one can adapt one hundred percent to that environment and furnish a form beyond one hundred percent and show a central bearing before them. For that, in eating too, one must not eat better than others. In clothing too, one must not dress better than others. In living too, one must not live better than others.

Even if you live so well that all the people of that village outwardly envy you, centering on that you cannot adapt to that environment. You may be connected with the privileged class, but the whole, from the very bottom, does not comply with you. Because enemies can appear anywhere, regardless of high and low, you must not be connected only with the privileged class. Because the whole is an enemy, one must hold an attitude of living by which one can stand in a position of adapting to the whole and furnish a posture of defense.

If you take responsibility for one region for two years, two-thirds of that period must be lived in such a way. Otherwise you cannot gather up that village, that environment. Dividing the carrying out of responsibility into the three stages of formation, growth and completion, in the formation and growth stages — that is, for two thirds — it cannot but be done from an unhappy position.

When we criticize centering on such matters, you must reflect on your attitude of living and your notions until now, having known the will and passed through the 1960s. Did you come forth centering on one mission of a secret envoy, as a laborer for the liberation of the homeland? Or did you come forth centering on the Unification Church, taking your own advancement as your goal and in order to manifest your own consciousness of authority? This is a great question.

Being for oneself seems good for the moment, but it perishes. Yet one who seems to be fulfilling the mission of a secret envoy cannot perish, because Heaven’s sovereignty is without fail together with him. The road the secret envoy walks is a road walked under the direct command of Heaven’s sovereignty, but when we depart from that realm of action, we come under Satan’s dominion. When one thus comes under Satan’s dominion, one cannot appear with the authority of the homeland God desires.

It is so in the world as well. It is the same even before an ordinary nation or its citizens. If, centering on a position of living well, one comes to stand in a position of setting forth one’s consciousness of authority and one’s own assertions, one will without fail be struck from round about. But if, without revealing oneself, one keeps step for their sake and, in a reasonable environment, leaves behind something that can bring benefit before them, then even if one tells them not to come, they will follow. The road the secret envoy must walk is precisely such a road.

Centering on the customs of that nation and that village, what benefit will I give there?

How shall I become one who can give benefit?

And with what can I give benefit before the person in charge of that village? One must appear before the person in charge who guides such a village, as the one closest to him, furnishing some form by which one can be of benefit.

Resolve anew according to the new command

The Unification Church today is laying such a road. The purpose for which the Teacher has guided until now is also that, though we are receiving opposition in the Republic of Korea, we should become ones who can give benefit before it in whatever way. Therefore, if only we come to stand in a position where we can, without fail, give benefit and where they can recognize that it is of benefit, we can take them.

And if we have truly done wrong, we must bow our heads, and even if we have done well, we must not lift our heads but remain quiet. When it becomes so, they naturally become our side. It is the same in a village. If there is a good person in that village, whatever anyone says, the villagers take that person’s side. The villagers recognize and discern him. Thus, the question of how we can gather up an environment in which all people can become our side depends on how we improve the environment centering on the position of a secret envoy. Therefore, you must know that such an attitude of living is absolutely necessary.

That unfavorable rumors have arisen concerning our Unification Church today is not because the Teacher did wrong. It all came about through betrayers.

Now you are new secret envoys. You are ones who, having received a new command from God, have stepped forth before a new world. Now you must become grave. You must not face the villagers with dignity. The matter of your life and death hangs upon it, and the matter of the world until now hangs upon it. Therefore, holding a grave heart, you must lay your foundation together with a new destiny and complete the charge of the secret envoy.

You must conduct yourselves well to lay a foundation that cannot collapse before the satanic world. Nevertheless, with a heart that keeps the old habits just as they were and says, “Whatever the new command may be, I do as I please,” God’s will cannot be accomplished.

New clothes and old clothes are different. A command and an old command are different. The new present point of time and the past point of time are different from each other. The past stage and the present stage are markedly different. This is a developmental stage. Without a new awakening and a new frame of mind and a new resolve, and without furnishing a foundation of a new environment, a new will cannot be accomplished.

The stages of Providence too ascend step by step: first stage, second stage, third stage. That is why you must have a heart that you can put things into practice yourselves in order to ascend to the next stage. And thus, when what has been put into practice comes to be adapted to the environment, the question becomes how one becomes an individual who can gather this as fruit. Setting such matters before us, you still do not know well. The heart with which you came in ten years ago and the heart at present are the same in facing the Teacher and facing God. If the heart at present becomes worse than the heart at that time, one is pushed out.

In the process by which God has been restoring until now, all such things as Heaven’s order and courtesy and etiquette have been compounded. Though you stand in such a compounded realm of the age, should you hold a heart worse than the heart you had in those ignorant days of old? The mission of a secret envoy in a village and the mission of a secret envoy in a province are different. The circumstances are different.

Also, it is different when one carries out the responsibility of a secret envoy centered on the sovereignty of a nation. It cannot be done with the same capacity as in the past. Therefore, when there is a new command and a new instruction, one must invest one’s life according to that command and set out again. It cannot be done with the foundation one had in the past. One must reinvest.

That is why the 1970s are different from the 1960s. Because they are different, we must reinvest for the people and the clan. That is why, centering on the 1970s, we cannot but furnish a new system strongly and give commands.

In the past, you were in a position of failing and being chased, but now you are in a position where you can be welcomed. If from now on you carry out the mission of a special envoy, from there one can see the horizontal advance of God’s will. Otherwise, the Unification Church cannot develop.

The inner life of the secret envoy

To go such a road of suffering, such a tedious road, toiling inwardly, is the life of a secret envoy. Not just anyone can live such a life. When the day is clear it is a worry, and when the day is cloudy it is a worry, and when it rains and snows and the seasons change it is a worry.

Even at the single sound of a dog barking in a village one passes through, one must think centering on the matter of one’s own life and death. If by any chance there is someone who comes seeking one’s own gate, one must live a life of staking one’s own life for that one person. One must live a life that demands sweat. Thus one must think of every matter from a position of tying it to the matter of one’s own life and death.

That is the inner life of those who have taken responsibility for the mission of a special envoy or a secret envoy. It is an inner life that no one else experiences. In a way it is the same as a condemned prisoner sentenced to death who, not knowing when the hour of death will come, sharpens all his senses keenly and lives feeling the threat of wondering whether a sound heard from outside might be a voice calling him to carry out the sentence.

You must know that, though one can merely move one’s body east and west and north and south, that itself is the same as a life in prison.

The Teacher cannot for a moment forget the days he has passed through until now, centered on such a mission. It has become a habit not to say the destination even when he goes somewhere. He reads the signs. Why is that? Because the enemy is always watching.

Through such a history of battle, the Unification Church has been raised to its present position, which the Republic of Korea can recognize. This did not come about of itself. It is because there were countless circumstances here, and there was a foundation of having fought while crossing the crises of life and death.

Everything was handed over and handed over again as Heaven’s, and that piled up and piled up and formed the present achievement. When you come to know such facts, your responsibility and mission are heavy.

In the six thousand years of the providential history of Restoration until now, countless prophets and righteous forebears were sacrificed along with countless circumstances. Can we, at this very moment, resolve the grievance and bring to fruition what has thus been linked as an altar of blood? Or shall we bind the han (한) still tighter? We are in a grave position of dealing with such matters. That is why you must know that we cannot but furnish an attitude of heart that can receive God’s sympathy, an attitude of living that can receive God’s sympathy, an attitude of public righteousness that can receive God’s sympathy.

The secret envoy is one who always lives for the homeland. Because the original sovereign is God, one must become a life and a self that says, “Father, may You alone be.” We are now in a position where we do not know what will happen, so the heart that says, “Even if I die, I die together with the Father; even if I am driven, I am driven together with the Father; even if I am chased, I am chased together with the Father; even if I fight, I fight together with the Father,” must not depart from within the sphere of the secret envoy’s life. A secret envoy bears the responsibility of gathering his heart and reporting to that sovereign whenever there is a secret.

That is why, in going forward with such a heart, if one has crossed ten crises of the road of death, one must bear more than ten crises’ worth of fruit. When one cannot bear it, one becomes a betrayer before God.

Why is it that communists who receive spy training and come down to the South cannot surrender even after beholding the actual state of South Korea? It is because behind that, within a life as a secret envoy unknown to others, there is the fact that they have overcome and crossed difficult crises several hundred times more intense than the life in South Korea in which they are now living, so that the environmental reality is no problem. That is why they do not surrender but cross over again to the North.

What kind of being is God? God is the great king of secret envoys. He is the great king of secret envoys who appears in the satanic world for the liberation of the homeland, and the supreme commander. Has God ever once in six thousand years asserted to this earth, “I am God, and this is the truth I can teach”? He has not. Yet God has toiled to instruct and form a bond through our clear conscience. What has broadened the ground of our minds and drawn us out toward a free world in which we can be united is the six thousand years of the providential history of Restoration.

Because the Son of God, who comes to this earth taking total responsibility for such things, has a mission to connect the mission of the secret envoy outwardly and inwardly, the difficulty of an enemy-like environment that he collides with outwardly becomes stimulating content by which he can be united with God inwardly.

The difficult environment does not separate but rather makes it possible to become one through intimate contact. That is why we cannot but acknowledge the fact that in such a place God without fail appears and blesses, and God can fight together with one.

Become a self who carries out the responsibility of the liberation of the homeland

When you feel such things keenly through this training session, and vow in order to carry out your responsibility, and step forth pledging to become new standard-bearers in the three-thousand-li peninsula, the Republic of Korea will come into our bosom. That is why, if you have radiant eyes, that light of the eyes must be transformed into a light that gazes straight at the glorious homeland.

If you have talent and strength, you must know how to go forward as warriors who can use this for the liberation of the homeland, feeling the conviction that you yourselves, in a dignified form, stand in place of sanctified persons in charge of the liberation of the homeland.

You must become selves who can establish the homeland, and make the homeland shine, and live together with the homeland, and die within the homeland. You must not neglect this solemn responsibility, which no one has been able to take before Heaven until now, and which can be done only once in one age. One must hear once and think ten things, and go forward comparing what one has heard once with more than ten.

In order to manifest Heaven’s fortune here, when you go forward with the conviction that you will go without minding it even if you yourself are disgraced a thousand times, or even though there be a road of death a hundred times over, God will guard the road you walk. This is because, since the Teacher has experienced in the life he has walked until now that God did not forsake him at every such time, God will certainly protect you too.

That is why, as a subject figure of mission for the liberation of the homeland, you must hold the conviction that in the one province or the one village you have been entrusted with, there is no one but you who will carry out this responsibility, and you must absolutely not retreat. You must not become a betrayer here. Nor must you fail to carry out the responsibility that accords with the heavenly mandate. Standing in the back alley of responsibility, one cannot cross over this road.

Even if one cannot sleep, one must do it, and even if one cannot eat, one must do it, and even while being chased, one must do it, and even if one dies, one must reach a decision and die. When you newly resolve and step forth saying you will carry out such a decisive mission, the road you walk will naturally open. But when it is not so, the world of hope, the world of light that the Teacher believed in and looked toward by setting you forth, will rather become a world of darkness. The Teacher is anxious about such a matter. That is why what I would leave with you at this hour is the matter called “the secret envoy and the homeland.”

When will that time be when the purpose for which God came seeking this nation is attained and the whole people, as one nation, praises Your name and can boast of one day of glory for ten thousand generations? When you become ones who can go forward pledging that not losing this mission, and finding it, is the purpose of my life, the day of hope of the liberation of the homeland will draw near before you. When it is not so, a road of suffering lies before you.

Also, you must know that, because you did not take responsibility, that result is handed over before the thirty million of this people.

A secret envoy is not made by having a fine appearance. Nor is he made by having much ability. The mission of the secret envoy is to stand in a position united in heart with God and, while rightly upholding the customs of that nation, to be absolutely loyal and gather up that environment. On the day he does only this, he can stand in the position of a proxy who has received the direct command of God, the sovereign of Heaven. When it becomes so, God cannot but take responsibility. The Teacher knows through many years of experience that if you take the responsibility of a secret envoy, that work will without fail come to fruition. Because I hope that you too will live such a life, I have spoken for a while today under the title “The Secret Envoy and the Homeland.”
