Reminiscence and Recollection

Reminiscence and Recollection

Former Headquarters Church, Korea

Some among you may know of it, but a full twenty-three years ago the Teacher was seized and taken into the Daedong Security Bureau in Pyongyang by the Communist Party. At that time, Pyongyang, having met liberation, was newly setting out to rebuild its churches and to carry out a historic mission. It was while in such an environment that the Teacher went to Pyongyang and unfolded a new Principle movement.

The Providential Background through Bok Jung Gyo (복중교)

At that time, in the religious world, along with the joy of the liberation that had come to this people, a movement was underway to sweep away all the han of the sorrowful life of faith endured under oppression during the period of Japanese rule and, overflowing with new hope and expectation, to rebuild the churches and bring about a new movement of reform in faith. It was in such an environment, in a field where the fresh flames of rebuilding were spreading, that our Unification Church came to set out.

As the Teacher worked within such an environment, believers who were central to the established churches, or people who had received special grace, began, instead of attending the churches to which they belonged, to gather before the Teacher.

And so at that time it began to be regarded as a problem in Pyongyang. That was when the Teacher was witnessing in Gyeongchang-ri (景昌里), near the West Gate, and was laying the ground for the Unification Church’s departure.

By what cause did such a problem come to arise?

Some among you too will have heard of Bok Jung Gyo. The Bok Jung Gyo centered upon Heo Ho-bin set out bearing, on Heaven’s behalf, a grave responsibility that Heaven had to prepare without fail upon this earth in the course of the Restoration of that time. Before the Bok Jung Gyo centered upon Heo Ho-bin came to set out, it had passed through three generations.

The first of these generations was Kim Seong-do, the mother of Jeong Seok-on. Passing through the work of Heaven centered upon this person, Heaven began to work directly upon Heo Ho-bin of the Bok Jung Gyo.

What did this group prepare at that time?

They began an all-around preparation to receive the Lord when he should come to this earth. In preparing, it must not end merely with a preparation to receive him in a joyful place. The Providence of Restoration of Heaven cannot be prepared with the present position alone.

This is because the present is a prolongation of the past, so the present ought to be a present able to stand upon the foundation of victory of the past, yet such a present was not attained. Therefore, for the present to manifest its position and authority as the present, all the conditions by which Heaven was invaded in the course of history must be entirely removed.

In other words, without setting up the standard that failed in the past as a condition of victory in the present, there can be no preparation upon the foundation of victory of the present; Heaven was in a position where it could not but have such a mission prepared over and over again.

And so the Bok Jung Gyo was a group that prepared inwardly for the coming Lord. Because the Lord had passed away amid sorrow, it was a historic tale that, without resolving upon this earth all the sorrowful circumstances of that departed Lord, one could not receive the Lord who brings hope and joy. Because there was such a tale, Heaven apportions this tale as a responsibility to countless people and thereby broadens the scope of the Providence of Restoration.

If it is Korea, then centering upon Korea, before the central figure of responsibility is set up, Heaven prepares this work worldwide in the surroundings. As this outer preparation reaches a certain standard, Heaven sets up an inner center and prepares accordingly.

Of the inner standard and the outer standard, the outer standard must always be furnished from a relational position. Therefore, the center is, after all, Jesus, who came and went long ago.

For this reason, centering upon the Christianity that centers upon Jesus, Heaven has until now broadened the foundation of the Providence of Restoration and cultivated the worldwide outer standard.

Then at what time do these outer standards and the center become one?

This has not yet become one. Until now, Christianity has worked centering upon Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but because it broadened a foundation for cultivating the outer base rather than a foundation grounded upon the inner standard able to complete Heaven’s inner Providence of Restoration, Jesus did not stand upon the foundation of victory able to complete his original mission upon this earth. To stand upon the foundation of victory, the inner standard must be newly reorganized. That is, the outer history that Christianity has woven until today must without fail be inherited. To bear such a responsibility, when seen in the order of inheritance, it is women without fail who must center upon this work and carry out the work of inheritance.

The Thought of Bok Jung Gyo and Its Mission

Thus, although the history of the Providence of Restoration made its providential departure centering upon women both inwardly and outwardly, women do not know how the Will unfolds and how it will be brought to its conclusion. Therefore, the whole of the decisive responsibility is something women cannot bear.

Why can they not bear it?

It is because Eve, being a woman, fell. Because Adam failed to fulfill his responsibility, and thereby Eve brought about the result of the fall, the Lord who comes again comes in a position where he must set in order all the content in which Adam failed and determine a new center. To set in order all the content, inward and outward, and to cultivate the standard of victory, there must without fail be a decisive authority. This is a problem that only the Lord who comes again, that is, the Lord who comes in the position of the third Adam, can resolve.

Until now, countless women have tried to take on the historic mission before it, but that was, after all, a relational position; from the subjective position, they could not do it. For this reason, the decisive center cannot be a woman. It was Bok Jung Gyo who, from such a position, cultivated one foundation able to carry out the worldwide mission inwardly. Before this Bok Jung Gyo appeared, the work to receive the Lord had first arisen in Cheolsan, North Pyongan Province, centering upon Kim Seong-do.

We Unification members know well the course of restoration through indemnity. It is the view of the Principle, and the principled standard of the Providence of Restoration, that one cannot see the departure of God’s new providence upon the earth except from a place able to determine the starting point at which past, present, and future can become one. To set up such a standard, one must not do so within the limited bounds of the soil of Korea as merely the soil of Korea, but must, standing in a position like that of a single altar representing the world, present the content of indemnity by which past, present, and future can be connected.

One of the forerunners of the age who came forth bearing this mission was Heo Ho-bin, who was leading Bok Jung Gyo. The content and history by which this woman came to take over the Will are considerably long, so I shall omit them.

Whenever Heo Ho-bin was to receive a revelation, a sign always appeared upon her body. After there was such movement through an outer stimulus, there was without fail an instruction from the spiritual world. Because that revelation was conveyed through Heo Ho-bin’s belly, that group was called Bok Jung Gyo. The name Bok Jung Gyo was not one coined by the group itself, but a term made at that time by rumor.

Having received revelations, what had they prepared over that time?

They awaited the appearance of one central being in a new historic era. Because that time was a time of joy, to form a joyful history, one cannot see a joyful departure until the sorrowful history woven until then is completely settled at some time, and until the day comes on which they have won victory. In other words, if there is some general who was defeated in war with an enemy country, for that general to meet a day of joy, he must meet one day of victory able to settle the sorrowful past of defeat entirely. Before meeting one day of victory, he cannot bring a day of joy before that country and people. Because this is a natural principle, it is likewise the same for the One who is to come.

To meet one day of joy, one must be able to remove the sorrowful days of the course of history. This is a grave responsibility that a forerunner charged with the Providence of Restoration must fulfill before anything else.

For this reason, one must pass through a process of reproducing all the content in which Jesus, representing the people of Israel, failed to accomplish the Will, and indemnifying it within that generation.

Bok Jung Gyo’s Devotion for the Lord at the Second Advent

From his birth in a stable until he passed more than thirty years of his life, Jesus lived with a sorrowful inner heart that no one in the world knew.

Moreover, the loneliness, the injustice, and the misery that he felt alone when he was hung and died upon the cross were unknown to the people of Israel of that time and are unknown to the countless Christians throughout the course of history. Because God had the responsibility to reproduce the life of Jesus, who went carrying such a miserable tale, and to restore through indemnity entirely what he could not do within that generation, He prepared accordingly, centering upon such a providential position.

For this reason, from before Jesus was born, God had the members of Bok Jung Gyo prepare, centering upon all the sorrowful circumstances of Joseph’s family. They prepared clothing that the coming Lord could change into once every three days, from the age of one until the age of thirty.

In other words, from his childhood, Jesus ought to have received the attendance of the people of Israel in a place where God could rejoice, and the people of Israel, chosen before God, were in a position where they had to fulfill the way of loyalty and filial piety. But because the people of Israel failed in such a mission, God, centering entirely upon Bok Jung Gyo, revived the victorious position of Israel and pressed that work forward once more.

In that process, the degree of devotion they offered is something our Unification Church members today cannot even imagine. In offering devotion, they did so centering upon the whole range of rites, from Western-style to Korean-style. They carried out the work of indemnity from a position in which they had to resolve, through haewon seongsa (해원성사), all the han-laden content that Jesus had held within him over the more than thirty years and could not accomplish.

For this reason, they could not but undergo prison life under Japanese imperialism.

In prison, having received from the spiritual world even the very date on which Japan would fall, they cried out, “The Emperor of Japan will fall. Japan will surely fall,” and, though bound to the chains of prison, they bore the figure of those who fought, staking their lives. They were not people who were ruled under the sovereignty of any age. No matter that they became bodies held confined (영어) behind iron bars, they transcended all the circumstances of the age and, with one heart, offered devotion solely for the Will of Restoration that God had left behind. We must know that this was their responsibility.

They came preparing themselves by repeating such a fight from the time of Japanese rule. When liberation came, they were earnestly hoping that the Lord they longed for would appear upon this earth. But when the Soviet army occupied North Korea and Kim Il-sung set up a new Communist regime, from that time they came to be persecuted by the Communist Party.

The Communist Party, raising the fine-sounding name of religion, fastened upon them the charge that they had exploited countless masses for the purpose of filling their own private greed.

In June 1946, because the Communist Party began a suppression of new religious bodies throughout North Korea, it was in a position where, if there were any body resembling such, it could not but denounce it.

At that time the Teacher was carrying out witnessing activity in Gyeongchang-ri.

Why did the Teacher, having been in South Korea, go to the North?

It was because the center of faith in Korea at that time was Pyongyang, and because it was there that all the historic struggles of faith had been woven until then. Because there was a mission to make a new departure upon that foundation which Heaven had prepared, the Teacher went to the North. And so, while carrying out witnessing activity there, on August 11, the Teacher was seized and taken into the Daedong Security Bureau by the Communist Party.

There is one thing I wish to tell you: the person named Heo Ho-bin walked that path, offering all her devotion throughout her whole life.

If you look at the history behind it, she walked a path you cannot imagine. That they kept their faith even while receiving extreme torture under the oppression of a Communist Party that treated religious people like enemies is truly astonishing.

The content of that torture is beyond all telling. In the sweltering summer, I heard that they were beaten so much over the ramie summer jackets they wore that the garments were riddled all over with holes. They fainted dozens of times, and her younger sibling died, unable to endure the torture. The more than forty people who led the whole were also imprisoned and tortured in misery.

The Teacher, too, in such a position, was treated as part of the same body and imprisoned. Those the Teacher still cannot forget are a man named Hong, who was responsible for the investigation at that time, and a man named Park Chan-jeong, who bore responsibility for and directed the whole affair. These people too will all be met at some time.

When we think of such things, those who have newly entered our Unification Church today will not know such historic facts. You do not know that this is a Unification Church in which such deep resentment is bound up. Those who entered in the days of the early persecution know the Unification Church from that time, but they do not know the content before they entered.

The Providence of Restoration always proceeds in this way. Therefore, the Unification members who enter hereafter will not know the Unification Church of the past. For this reason, a historic problem must without fail be presented.

Reminiscence and Recollection in the True Sense

On the path the members of the Unification Church walk today, the reality they meet has without fail been cultivated in the past. Therefore, the problem is how to transform that cultivated ground upon the stage of reality.

Considering this problem, whether one is a person of responsibility standing in place of some historic whole or a person of responsibility walking the course of an individual in the present, the position is the same. To become a person who, from today, can resolve upon the joy of victory with the hope of tomorrow, one must know the historic facts of the path the Unification Church has walked until now.

Today, have you, in the true sense, reminisced upon and recollected the course of the history of the Providence of Restoration?

You have learned the Principle. From Adam’s family through Noah’s family, Abraham’s family, and passing through the eras of Moses and Jesus, in the Christian history that has come down to today, centering upon what did the countless martyrs who shed their blood become the sacrificial offerings of history? They became sacrificial offerings for the sake of the one day of final victory.

Therefore, we must know that how we are to gather in the one day of victory is the task and the mission given to us.

What will that past demand, centering upon ourselves today, or considering the vantage point of future history?

Of course it will demand victory and pursue victory. To pursue victory is to meet the one day of joy. To meet the one day of joy, one must entirely remove the injustice of the martyrs who were sacrificed in the past and must reach the result of the ideal that those martyrs hoped for as they bore their responsibility.

You must know that, without receiving in this one day on which they can fulfill their heart’s desire, we today cannot meet a single day as a day of joy.

Most people try to forget the sorrowful past. How good it would be if the past could be forgotten! But that the past cannot be forgotten is the sorrow of Heaven. As for facts that came about while human beings lived upon the earth, they can be forgotten with the passage of time. But the history of the Providence of Restoration is not a history that can be forgotten. Because it is the history of Restoration, one does not forget such sorrowful facts; rather, one must gather in the sorrowful tales that were scattered as tears amid those sorrowful facts. How does one gather them? Because it is a sorrowful history, it cannot be done without shedding tears.

For this reason, the Providence of Restoration is for the sake of reproducing those sorrowful facts and thereby meeting the one day of victory, that is, the one day of joy, on which one can tread upon the sorrow of the past and rise above it. Looking toward such a day, countless prophets and righteous forebears have been sacrificed throughout history.

In that sense, the reminiscence and recollection we must perform are not vague, nor is it a vague recollection. We must reproduce a substantial reminiscence and recollection in reality, and thereby determine, from within my single self today, the victory of the ideal that they hoped for. It is the responsibility of those who are bearing the destined path of Restoration to determine victory on this path, feeling it keenly from the body outwardly and from the heart inwardly, even if it should mean losing one’s life.

When we are charged with such a responsibility from Heaven, it is not a fight to take over as one’s own an environment that arises at a convenient time. That fight is not a fitting, moderate fight, but a fight to the death. It is not to inherit a time already furnished; rather, because one determines the inner problem of that time, one must carry out the work of furnishing it. Therefore, the reminiscence and recollection concerning them must be a realistic reminiscence and recollection.

Then the emotional problem, or the entangled circumstances, felt there must be an accord with the problem of the heart on the clan level, and on the horizontal level, all the content of sorrow, in which the people of Israel and Jesus of that time failed to become one and suffered a historic invasion by Satan, must be connected here again and reproduced.

Only when the clan-level standard becomes one can Heaven come upon this place, and can Jesus Christ, who came and went, be reproduced spiritually. And unless one secures here the outer standard, together with the determination of the inner standard, centering today upon a single person of responsibility, the realistic standard that Peter, James, and the other twelve apostles and all the scribes and priests of that time failed to take responsibility for, the work of indemnity cannot be carried out. From such a standard, one must without fail drag things back to the sorrowful place of the past.

If One Forgets the Past and the Present and Dreams of the Future

It is because the person of responsibility cannot meet the joyful moment without indemnifying the sorrowful facts of the past and winning victory, that Heaven drives him into a place more miserable than the past.

You must know that it was the position of the forerunners who came bearing the mission of the age to resolve the problem of how, standing at the crossroads of ruin or prosperity and longing for Heaven, to determine the one moment of victory.

You must know that this is not something done only by those who bore responsibility in the course of history, but that such a problem reappears today as well.

For this reason, even though you have now entered the Unification Church, you cannot become a person of the Unification Church centering only upon the realistic standard of the Unification Church.

In other words, the person who has entered the Unification Church must reproduce upon the stage of reality all the sorrow undergone in the course of history until now.

One must not end that sorrow as sorrow but change it into joy and praise the fruit of the labor and the noble spirit of the forebears until now. Because, by the price of the sacrifice the forebears labored for as they looked ahead in their age, we have gathered victory such as we have today, so that, if one hopes that through me the forebears may resolve their han and accomplish it, the problem one must consider, of connecting the ties of the spiritual world and bringing them into accord upon the stage of reality, is the path of Restoration you pioneer today, and you must know this clearly. Yet you do not know this.

Therefore, reminiscence must not be a reminiscence of mere recollection, but a realistic reminiscence. To bring about a realistic reminiscence, recollection must be a realistic recollection that can be realized from many angles.

From this viewpoint, the person who reproduces all providential problems as a realistic feeling and connects this with the position of his accord can inherit the worldwide foundation of Restoration left as a historic tradition today. But the person who cannot do this is merely a passing life.

For this reason, unless one has one day on which one’s present self can grasp through experience (체휼) the foundation of victory of the past and determine it, one cannot remain as one who is alive before God.

Then what is it that the Unification Church presents today?

Driving you along the pioneer’s path with things like forty-day witnessing is in order to bring you face to face with such a problem and thereby bring you into accord. Because the failure of the vertical standard and the horizontal standard of the history of Restoration, ending in a lonely place, became the deep resentment of God, to meet the one day of victory, one must be driven even into a standard beyond that lonely and miserable one of old.

When the era of the people passes, the era of the nation will come; when the era of the nation passes, the era of the world will come. As a larger stage that develops in this way draws near before us, Heaven without fail presents the content of trial and misery that can correspond to it, and thereby indemnifies the realistic problem.

For this reason, you must uphold and attend God with the heart in a lonely place where no one is. You must enter a place where all the people of the world reject you, believe in those who reject you, and indemnify for them the heavenly mission. Without passing through the lonely, forlorn, and sorrowful place of the trials of the forebears, one cannot connect the ties of Restoration. This is inevitable.

The longer it is since you entered the Unification Church, over ten years, and the older your years of faith grow, what happens?

You come to look reality in the face. But in looking reality in the face, one ought without fail to look at reality centering upon the past; yet there are many cases of looking at reality having forgotten the past. For this reason, if one asks what is most needed in a nation, it is national character.

In a nation, centering upon the national standard, how does the intent of that nation stand?

All the codes of etiquette and traditions made until now become the issue. That is, how one inherits the historic content that has become the foundation of life is what becomes the issue at the present point. Then, having inherited all the traditions left historically, what must one do?

One must set up all the conditions of victory. Only by first carrying out those conditions of victory oneself can one advance in society and fulfill one’s responsibility, as an individual if an individual of that society, or as a person of responsibility if the person of responsibility of some group.

If there is a person who disregards this, that person is a foolish person. Moreover, if one forgets the past and the present and dreams of the future, that is a delusion.

However hard one strives, the result ends in delusion.

The Purpose for Which Heaven Established the Unification Church

Today there are many people cultivating themselves in mountain temples or offering devotion in churches. They offer devotion, saying that the world of the Way (도) will come and that the time will come when the purpose of the Way is fulfilled; but it will not do to sit and offer only devotion in that way. Doing so, one may set up the vertical, inner foundation, but one cannot set up the horizontal foundation. For this reason, this problem, crossed inwardly and outwardly, must be settled in our single self today.

You must know that your past, that is, the past before you entered the Unification Church, has nothing to do with the Unification Church. That past of yours has no relation whatever to the Unification Church.

What sort of past was that past?

It was a past containing all the ties of resentment in which sin was carried down from one’s ancestors through the generations. It is not a past in which one can praise the glory of victory. That is to say, there has been until now not one single person able to receive the Blessing before God and to be praised in a place of glory. Because the ties of the True Parents have not appeared in the course of history, this is the same not only for the forebears but for you as well.

If it is so even when seen centering upon the historic providence of the Restoration today, what of all the historic providence that you as an individual have undergone? It is all the same.

Then what of you yourselves?

Until you were bound to the Unification Church, you had no strength to stand in the course of history where the han of sorrow was left behind. Therefore, that must be settled. That is not something done in a joyful place. You rejoice, having received grace from the very moment you entered the Unification Church.

Why do you rejoice so?

It is to settle the past, to have the future inherited, and further, in order, from a position of having the past inherited, to receive it, take dominion over it, and be able to set it in motion. In other words, it is to connect the past, present, and future into one.

Even though it ought to be made so, one ends with a joy of one’s own alone, supposing that this will bear fruit as a joy centering upon oneself; but it cannot become so. That joy is a joy of one time woven from the past, a joy for the sake of setting one up on the standard able to represent and bear responsibility for the realistic world, and a joy for the sake of bringing about the departure of the future. It is not a joy that has appeared to oneself individually. In this is a joy bearing a tale to which the three domains of past, present, and future are attached. Those who retreated forgot this and rejoiced, and so they all fell away.

Having all fallen away while yearning for tomorrow from a reality in which they set out to seek joy, one must walk the course of bringing the past back to life. This must be so for me as an individual, so for today’s family, so for the Unification denomination, and, since there is a new tie by which the Republic of Korea can hereafter receive Heaven’s blessing, to become a nation able to stand in place of the people of Israel, the Republic of Korea must bear such a responsibility.

For this reason, the Republic of Korea itself will hereafter be brought onto the stage of trial. The Republic of Korea itself will undergo trial, the churches of the Republic of Korea will undergo trial, and the Christian believers of the Republic of Korea will undergo trial. The sons and daughters of the Republic of Korea will enter within the bounds of the urgent crossroads of life and death in the course of trial. There, from the people below to the rulers above and the highest individuals of responsibility who lead the nation, all must become of one body and one heart and become inheritors of the past. To inherit the past, one must without fail settle the sorrow of the past entirely.

That there was sorrow in the past is for the sake of meeting the one day of victory. This victory is a victory that must be connected not only to the past but to the stage of reality.

How does one connect it?

Here one must present a new movement. This must become the foundation of a new hope for the future. The point at which things can be reproduced in this way will become the resurrection of the past, the departure of reality, and the origin of the future. It is the Will of God, who has come seeking this people, that you yourselves become grounded upon such a position. Therefore, you must know that the purpose for which He establishes and plans the Unification Church lies here.

What You Must Take Responsibility For

Today you will wonder why we must feel the responsibility for the three eras, recollect the past, and resolve upon the determination to win. It is because the spirit individuals who have gone to the spiritual world did not all attain victory in their earthly life but failed and so have not yet seen the completion of their purpose. These must without fail return to the earth and be released from the han condition of not having attained victory.

Then who must resolve this for them?

You must resolve it. Seen from the principled view of the Unification Church today, they are in the Cain position. The spirit individuals in this Cain position must submit to the Unification members who are in the Abel position. To submit, the inheritance procedure must first be completed.

For you to bring that Cain to submission, you must, without fail, be better than Cain. For this reason, you must be better than the standard through which the ancestors of the generations passed. You must know this clearly.

What must you take responsibility for?

First, you must take responsibility for the spiritual world; second, you must take responsibility for the world; and third, you must take responsibility for your descendants. This is the path of Restoration that the Unification members must bear and walk today, and the path of destiny that the Unification Church must bear and walk.

Then how much have you yourselves thought about the spiritual world?

You must take responsibility for the grieving souls of the spiritual world. They died without a country and without people. They died without kin and without family. They are all utterly and solitarily alone. In the place where they went, resolved upon death for the sake of God’s Will, when the husband went, the wife opposed him, and when the son went, the father opposed him; and again when the father went, the son opposed him. They could not walk this path of the Will with a family form or a relational tie centering upon the tie of lineage. Knowing this, you must, taking this one era as the standard, resolve on earth, on their behalf, the han of such grieving souls.

You must not think today that it is enough merely to escape by yourself upon the difficult stage shown to your realistic sight. You must know that, when your actions are seen from the viewpoint of the haewon seongsa of the countless spirit individuals of the spiritual world, if you act wrongly, you will leave behind han for a thousand ages and will go leaving upon the earth content of indemnity multiplied several times over.

For this reason, you must know that even in this age today, a path of persecution, trial, and suffering remains within Heaven’s Providence of Restoration.

Seen from the Principle, Cain must without fail go through Abel. Cain is the elder brother and Abel the younger, yet Cain must indemnify through his younger brother Abel.

Then where must one indemnify?

One must indemnify in the present. That indemnity is an indemnity for the sake of the past rather than the future. You must not forget this. One must stand before this path of destiny of the three eras. A person who has not grasped through the heart’s experience this grave place absolutely cannot walk the course of Restoration.

Today the members of the Unification Church must know the history the Teacher has walked. Because the Unification Church remains not in the present but through the past, for the present self to stand rightly here, one must inherit the ties of the heart of the Unification Church of the past. One must come forth, centering upon the content of the past.

Then for what reason did it come forth, centering upon such content?

It is because of the nation of Israel. Considered centering upon Jesus, it came forth so because of the nation of Israel even more than the people of Israel.

For what did God fight over the four thousand years until He sent Jesus?

He fought to make the nation of Israel. He came fighting, hanging out the signboard of a nation. Because deep resentment is bound up in centering upon this, today the Unification Church must without fail restore the Republic of Korea completely. Therefore, it is the company of unification that set out, centering upon the problem of how to restore this nation, bearing upon the stage of reality the content of indemnity of the past.

The Reason Reminiscence and Recollection Are Necessary

You yourselves must integrate, through this nation and this people, all the historic content of the countless forebears who came down vertically over the four thousand years up to Jesus’ era.

From the present position, centering upon yourself, you must integrate it and win victory there. If you do not win victory there, you cannot see a departure.

Seen from this viewpoint, even if it has not been ten years but several decades since you entered the Unification Church, you must clearly know that you are people who have not yet made such a departure.

However much you have cultivated the Way and offered much devotion, you must go in accord with such a principle. Those who do not conform to this cannot, by their strength, walk this path however they might try. Even if they go, they fall away midway. For this reason, without Heaven’s cooperation, one cannot walk this path.

Then why is the term reminiscence and recollection necessary today?

It is necessary so that, centering upon the feeling of daily life at the present point, one’s own self may enter a place graver than the past; it is by no means necessary to avoid such a place.

Because the work of indemnity begins centering upon that, you must in any case enter such a place. For this reason, the historic central figures who came and went until now entered prison as well. One cannot but pass through this path of being bound to such chains. This path is a path walked, staking one’s life, centering upon a new Will. The Teacher too has walked such a path until now. As he walked that path, the whole of the Republic of Korea opposed him, countless denominations opposed him, and even the heterodox ways (雜道) all opposed him. That they all opposed him has now become the content by which they can be brought to submission.

How does one here win victory and bring them to submission?

One must bring them to submission not by sword and gun but by natural submission. Only so is Restoration achieved. To do so, one must first bring the spiritual world completely to submission. And so, in the course of reality, one must form a relationship with the individual, form a relationship with the family, and form a relationship at the standard of the clan and the people. When the horizontal foundation is cultivated in this way, the expectation of national victory is set up automatically. You must know this.

Today I must pass through the three eras. Seen thus, the past is the type of Adam, the present the type of Jesus, and the future the type of the Lord at the Second Advent. God’s history of Restoration too continues from Adam to Jesus and then to the Lord at the Second Advent. These are the first Adam, the second Adam, the third Adam. Yet since it failed at the first and failed at the second, the third must succeed.

If it was not accomplished at the first and the second, the third must without fail be made to succeed.

Then why do such a past, present, and future arise here?

At what time and from where do they arise?

Such a past, present, and future do not arise from people like Jacob or Moses. Such a past came to arise because of parents. The future too arises because, through the fault of parents, one could not at that time have a foundation of future happiness.

For this reason, past, present, and future come to arise, centering upon the content of True Parents. From where did the term True Parents arise? That term arose because of parents. The term “present” too cannot be used except by one who bears the name of parents. It is the same with the future. Therefore, the present and the future begin with True Parents.

The Content the Unification Church Presents and Your Responsibility

Then what is the content the Unification Church presents today?

The Unification Church presents the family. This is a new family centering upon parents. The sons and daughters who set out anew in the new family system must first settle the past.

To do so, what must one do?

Even though the lineal content of each of you differs and your backgrounds differ, to resemble the parents, you must carry out the work of engrafting. Without being turned upside down and engrafted, it will not do. To be engrafted, you must settle entirely the course of indemnity remaining within yourself. Because it began with parents, it must be settled through parents. And so you must be engrafted onto the True Parents. Because Adam did not become the True Parent but became the false parent, God has until now come seeking the True Parents. The bridegroom and bride and the marriage of the Lamb in the era of the Second Advent are all for the sake of seeking the parents.

Then what sort of work has been carried out over the many courses of history?

Until now, the work of saving the nation, centering upon the nation, has not been carried out. Because everything came forth centering upon individual salvation, the salvation of the family could not even be spoken of.

Even the way of salvation in the course of history said that the individual must attain salvation; it did not say that husband and wife must attain salvation. It could not say that the family must attain salvation. This is because the standard of husband and wife was not passed through.

You who are in such a position have entered the Unification Church. But because the present Unification Church is not in this position, what is it that is needed here for you as tradition?

How must one indemnify?

Because sin was committed by going outside, to indemnify this one must go outside and indemnify one’s way back in. This is the witnessing period of the Unification Church.

Just as Jesus too left home and, centering upon his disciples, walked the three-year course of public ministry and carried out the work for the restoration of the people, you too must, for three years, leave home and indemnify your way back in. You must seek your way back even while being treated with contempt as you go out.

You must not take money as you go, nor take clothing. You must go forth centering upon God, bearing only a single staff. And thus you must set up sons and daughters through whom my past becomes a living past, and my present becomes one with God, and who can become the source of the Unification Church in the future. You must know this traditional content.

For this reason, you are not people of a single era. In the course of restoration through indemnity, you must not act freely as you please.

You must not do even the things you wish to eat and the things you wish to wear as you please. However hot it is, you cannot carelessly take off your clothes. You must live thus carefully, attending to the countless spirit people of the spiritual world.

Yet are you doing so now?

The spirit persons in the spiritual world are watching, from front and back, left and right, above and below, everything you are doing now. They are watching with open eyes what you are doing now and what you are thinking.

The countless ancestors of the generations who came and went in the course of the history of the Providence of Restoration are watching from the position of a second-level person of responsibility.

Seen thus, in the end, who is one’s ancestor?

It is Adam and also Jesus. And one’s own self is the type of the Second Advent. Seen in vertical history, it is so arranged. These three must become one. The type of the Second Advent must restore what Adam and Eve failed in and must restore what Jesus failed in. Without restoring this, the work of the Second Advent cannot be accomplished.

In your own single generation too, your ancestors are Adam and Eve. But if there is a person who, centering upon the Christian history until now, can inherit the lineage of the True Parents, he is a second-level ancestor, that is, an ancestor in the Abel position. Therefore, you are the type of the Second Advent.

Then, centering upon where you must indemnify?

You must bring things into accord and win victory centering upon the standard of tradition that Christian history until now has set up. Only so can you set up and go forth with one person of victory able to receive the Lord at the Second Advent.

For this reason, you stand in these three eras. The relationships of front and back, left and right, above and below are all so arranged. Here the relationships of front and back, left and right, above and below must neither tilt forward nor topple over.

You must, without fail, furnish, in a place brought into accord centering upon the past, present, and future, a tale that no one can invade. Only so can you here recover your new stage of activity. You must think upon these things.

To Become Sons and Daughters of God

When one looks at the Unification members today, they boast of their years, saying, “I have been in the church for ten years”; but does Heaven’s providential history end in ten years?

The person who does not grow graver as the days go by is a sick person. Such people are no more than a passing life.

If there is a person who thinks that, because this is a phenomenon of history’s development, it will not apply to us, that is far from the truth. You must become able to accord with principle and law. Those who consolidate this and inherit the tradition left by the seniors who passed through the history of the past become individuals able to be raised before the one who remained through the history of that time.

Those who have newly entered the Unification Church today are, frankly, doing nothing. What the Teacher thinks is this: because you must in any case walk the path of Restoration, the matter is how you connect to the stage of reality, the feeling of daily life, by which you can become substantial in the official content of the path that must be walked, setting aside any environment. Because you have taken up such a responsibility, you must clearly know that, according to the problem of whether you carry out that responsibility, the whole momentous problem is decided.

For this reason, you must, centering upon the Teacher, walk this path the Teacher has walked. You must stand in a place able to substitute the site where the Teacher stands for your site, and the future the Teacher desires for your future. I hope you know that without standing in such a place, you cannot become the sons and daughters of God.

Prayer
Father, we know that, even though the fortune of Heaven is stretching out today into the world, all those circumstances converge into one. Knowing that the relationships of front and back, left and right, above and below are the providential ties that must be untangled in me today, we earnestly desire that Thou grant us not to become those who forget the starting point from which they themselves have walked, whether in some difficult place or in a joyful place, before the remaining path of Restoration.

This morning bless the children scattered throughout the whole nation; and since there are throngs in every place of the world who, centering upon the Father’s Will, look toward this place and long for it, we earnestly ask and desire that Thou grant them to be able to form a tie of life with the Father.

When we recollect the reminiscence of the past today, we must think once more about how miserable the heart of the Father was, who had to drive us onto this path that no one knows. When we think of the Father, who has stood in the position of bearing the past and turning the present and the future upside down, we must be able to settle the shadowed past, furnish the qualification to meet a new joy in reality, and meet a bright future.

We earnestly ask and desire that Thou grant us, knowing the point at which past, present, and future can become one, to be without lack in our relation of facing the Father’s circumstances.

Today is a holy day; therefore, in every place where they gather bearing Thy name, let the hand of Thy mercy and love be ever together with them. Father, Thy three sons and daughters who came from Japan will return today; bless the path upon which they go.

Now these have stood in a position where, returning to Japan, they must bear responsibility for all the problems of sorrow that history has woven upon the remaining battlefield and pioneer every road of the fight to leave this to reality and to the future; therefore, we earnestly ask and desire that, in every place they go, Thou Thyself directly preside over the whole and guide them.

Grant that we do not appear in a shameful figure before the remaining days and the remaining world. Grant that we do not, presenting a shameful figure of ourselves before the Father, become those who through themselves reveal all the more the shame of the people.

We earnestly beseech Thee to grant that the Providence of Restoration of the people and the world not be diminished through us, and further, that we become sons and daughters able to comfort the Father.

We resolve that we will walk once more the remaining path of Restoration, so be Thou Thyself together with us. All these words we have offered up, bearing the holy name of the True Parents. Amen
