Former Headquarters Church
Today I will speak to you, taking up the theme “The Final Victor Who Can Stand Before the Will.”
If one is a human being, you all know well that everyone pursues something in their mind or wanders seeking something. People, even to live a single day, set up some purpose or will and so live. This is the daily attitude of the lives of human beings. It is the same in passing a month or a year.
The Reason the Will Is Needed
You well know the fact that you yourselves are precious beings born bearing life upon this earth. This is why, even in walking the course of a lifetime that goes beyond a single day, one must likewise set up a will and go.
Just as it is with one human being, so it is also with the destiny of a people or a nation formed by human beings joining. As a single nation, in laying out a hundred-year plan or a thousand-year plan as one nation, that nation’s destiny too can be considered swayed according to what kind of will it goes forward centered on.
Just as it is with the individual, so with the family, society, clan, people, and nation; and if we think on a somewhat larger scale, the world too must go forward centered on such a will.
Seeing this, if there is a God who created this heaven and earth, the conclusion follows that that God too moves the Cosmos forward, centered on some will.
Whether for one individual living out his life or for one nation living out each day, one must, without fail, go forward centered on some will. It is the same for the world. The fortune of the world, too, cannot go in any direction whatever if it departs from the Will.
And further, because God too drives the great fortune of this Cosmos toward some purpose and some summit of the providence, you must conjecture the fact that He cannot but lead this heaven and earth in a direction that can be made one with that providential Will.
Considering it from this standpoint, whether one becomes “a final victor who can stand before the Will” cannot but be said to be an exceedingly important problem for us who live in this age.
Had human beings not fallen—that is, had this world not become an evil world—we today would not need a will that we ourselves require or must ourselves pioneer.
If the individual stands in such a position, so would the family; and if such families gather and form a clan, that clan likewise; and if such clans gather and form a nation, that nation likewise.
In that case, the meaning is that, in moving the whole nation forward, one could go without centering on any will.
Had this world developed unfallen, on into the world of the homeland, the very moving of this world would be a moving toward the Will, and it could not move apart from the Will.
Therefore, had human beings not fallen, the very life of the human being would have been a life toward the Will. That we today set up some will and strive to live centered on that will is because we fell.
Had the original, unfallen world been realized, God too would not have needed to set up something separate called a will and so relate with human beings. Because the human being itself would have stood in a position of inseparable bond with God’s Will, and God too would have come forth from a position of being wholly united with the Will, the meaning is that there is no need to set up some will and relate before God.
But you must realize that today the Will is needed because we fell. Because we fell, this world became an evil world. This is why you must realize the fact that history has overturned and come down to this day to judge and clear away and remove such a world, and once again to set up a will that can be made one with God to realize the original individual and family and clan, people, nation, and world that ought to have been realized unfallen.
On this fallen earth, countless human beings live, but they still do not know the original Will God sought to set up at the time of creating heaven and earth. They are not living together with Will. Within that Will, all of heaven and earth is contained, and there is contained the content by which the world can be made one automatically. But because such a Will has not yet appeared, up to now humankind has wandered in countless regions, or in countless environments, seeking the individual will.
Therefore, we cannot help but consider the fact that the clan, people, nation, and world too are placed in a historical destiny of having no choice but to go seeking that Will. Because God seeks to establish the perfect individual—that is, the individual who can be made one with the original Will that ought to have been set up together with the human being at the time of creation—and the family, clan, people, nation, and world that can be made one with that Will, it is an inevitable fact that, on the providential course of going forward according to the Will, the person who upholds God must set up that Will.
That Will is a will that can gather the individual, a will that can gather the family, a will that can gather the original desire. And that Will cannot depart from history, cannot depart from the age, and cannot but be bound up with the future. One must be able to set up that Will.
Where Must the Will Appear?
Then where must that Will appear?
If it is a will bound up with human beings, that will must without fail appear in the human world. Then, when and where will that Will come to seek us out? This is an important problem.
If there is a God who has set up an unchanging Will, that God will, without fail, consummate this Will together with human beings. This Will is a will God must consummate, and at the same time, a will human beings must uphold and realize.
Up to now, in the course of the providence of salvation, history has been buffeted and broken and then raised again.
Even passing through such repeated history, if there is one thing that has remained, it is the Will that can be made one with God and can stand in God’s stead. This Will—this family-level Will and people-level Will, and national-level Will and worldwide Will that God requires—must without fail appear upon this earth.
God’s history is not a world of leaps. In liberating fallen human beings, one cannot establish a family while excluding the individual, and one cannot establish a clan while omitting the family. Nor can one establish a people while disregarding the clan. Nor can one establish a nation while disregarding the people, nor establish a world while disregarding the nation.
This is why you cannot deny the fact that history has developed according to how great a will one individual goes forward bearing—that is, according to how great a thought one individual holds and how strong a will of a content that can undergird history and the age he goes forward bearing.
The wills that the countless prophets and patriots who came upon this earth set up are not wills they themselves asserted. Because they regarded the responsibility of their age as the Will of Heaven and shouldered it, they could set up such wills.
We must realize that the prophets and patriots were people who came and went upon this earth equipped with such a bond behind them, though the human beings of that time did not know it.
Seen centered on one nation, there are loyal subjects. Behind every nation, there are many such people. By setting up a strong will, they carried out an individual mission, or a family mission, or a clan, people, and national responsibility, and, further, a worldwide mission. Or some people came shouldering, in one field of history, a responsibility opposed to the current of the age, and carried out that mission and went. We must realize that such people are the figures of history.
Even among these countless figures of history, there is a need for a figure of mission who, as an individual, can represent humankind; a representative of the family who can stand in the stead of the mission and will of Abel; or a representative of the clan, a representative of the people, a representative of the nation. God, too, awaits such a representative.
That human beings fell is a fact, and that this earth is evil is also a fact; and God, who cannot leave this evil earth just as it is, cannot but require one person to stand in this earth’s stead. Not many people, but one person, is needed. God requires one person who can represent all the people of the world—that is, if it be three billion, the three billion of the world’s humankind—or one person who can represent that world in history and in the age.
When we think from this standpoint, behind the historical process by which God set up the noun “providence” and has related with human beings, there must be some will.
That will, because it is a will set up by one person who represents that age—by one person who is a providential individual standing in the stead of the unique and eternally unchanging Will of God—transcend history. And it transcends the age, too.
From this standpoint, Abraham, the father of faith, whom you also know well, can be said to have been one representative who transcended his age.
The Historical Individual
When we examine the history of Christianity and further the history of Judaism, we can see that God, from the very beginning, has come down to this day, relating with human beings and relating with history over the long, long span of six thousand years.
Passing through so many ages of history, He formed, centered on one purpose and equipped with one ideal form, a history of peoples and a history of nations that raised a response in age after age of that history. But before there could be such a history of nations, there had first to be a history of clans; and before there could be a history of clans, there had to be a history of families; and before that, a history of individuals.
By linking that history of individuals, one could realize a world of the Will that could shine ceaselessly on the course of history.
God set up one individual to realize a world of the Will upon this fallen earth, and the being of righteousness who was that one is none other than Abraham.
Then, having set up Abraham, what did God require?
Did he say, “Live for yourself”? No. He said, “In the stead of the Jewish nation, render full loyalty for the sake of Heaven.” He did not say, “Sacrifice everything for yourself.” Nor did He say, “Bear sons and daughters upon this earth, attend your parents, and live well.” He did not say, “Go as you please where you wish to go,” nor did He say, “Eat what you wish to eat as you please, and when you wish to sleep, spread your bedding and sleep as you please.”
Because Abraham’s father was an idol-seller, he was in a position opposed to God. For the restoration of humankind upon the globe, God said to such an Abraham, “Get out of that environment and convey the Will of God to all people.”
You must realize that it was from such a standpoint that God set up Abraham.
Originally, God’s Will is not something to be set up amid sin-laden human beings who live not knowing it, nor amid human beings who live not knowing the Will of God.
Because that Will was originally the will Adam sought to set up over all things, Abraham, whom God set up to establish that Will, had to do everything from such a place. The meaning is that he had to be so in his mind.
Even while holding the ideal, he had to reconsider the content that ideal held, and if his environment was not an environment in which God could move, he had to get out of such an environment. He had to strip away entirely all the erring states of sin entangled historically. God required such things of Abraham.
The Nature of Satan, Different from God
By carrying out everything God commanded, Abraham came to stand in a position where God could say, “It begins from you.” It was to set him up in such a position that God sought Abraham.
And so He commanded Abraham,
“Forsake your beloved native hills and streams, pack your bundle, leave Ur of the Chaldeans, and go to a new land. Forsake your beloved parents and family and clan, and depart.”
Following such a command of God was, for Abraham, a venture.
If one is parted from one’s parents, anyone who is human cannot but grieve. Yet, however precious the foundation of that family in which one has until now lived happily, there is no choice.
However precious one’s own environment, or one’s clan-level base or people-level base, the meaning is that it must all be forsaken. And in departing, one must not think, “Oh! I go to live well.”
That God blessed Abraham, saying, “Your descendants will multiply like the stars of heaven and like the grains of sand on the seashore,” was not a blessing for the single family of Abraham.
The meaning is that it was not a blessing to make the one man, Abraham, live well, nor a blessing to give a blessing to the one individual, Abraham. The blessing God promised, lifting the one individual, Abraham, was world-historical.
Though it was a blessing bestowed upon the individual Abraham, because it was bestowed upon Abraham as the representative of the world, it was a blessing that could unfold an eternally unchanging Will. This is why within that blessing the family is contained, the clan is contained, and the people, or the nation, or the world, is all contained.
Abraham, when he received God’s blessing, did not know the meaning of that blessing. Even so, when God later commanded him to offer as a burnt offering (燔祭) Isaac, his one and only son begotten in his old age (晩得子), he took Isaac up Mount Moriah and was about to offer him as a burnt offering.
My friends, think about such a thing today from a realistic, commonsense standpoint. It would seem that God, too, had lost His mind. But God gave such a command to Abraham to judge history and the age. He could not but give such a command so that, even should the history of Abraham’s descendants perish, the living foundation and deeds Abraham set up might establish one absolute standard, a standard by which they could live blessedly forever and ever for all ages.
If, in setting up a strong will, God were to exclude the human being because the human being had fallen, Satan would attack the human being, taking that as a condition. This is why, to subdue Satan completely and prevent Satan from carrying on a work of attack, God could not but give such a command.
The nature of Satan, the attributes of Satan, and Satan's desire to center on himself. It is to drag everything in and say, “Be for me.”
How do Satan and God differ?
Satan centers everything on himself. He centers on his family, centers on his sons and daughters, and regards this whole world as a thing that ought to live centered on himself. This is the nature of Satan.
God, by contrast, even sacrificing Himself, is for the family, for the clan, for the people, and for the nation. The meaning is that He is for the greater. It is because the more one loves the whole, the more the value of that whole is felt within oneself. Good (善) is to be for the greater, beyond oneself; evil (惡) is to be for oneself more than for the world.
Abraham, who faced the providential Will, must never become a person who centers on himself. He must not become a person who centers on his family, nor a person who centers on his sons and daughters.
This is why, when about to offer Isaac as a burnt offering, he took up the knife, saying,
“Isaac, though you are my son, I do not center on you; I offer you as a burnt offering for the sake of a nation greater than you, for the sake of the world, and for the sake of Heaven, which is greater than the world.”
We must realize the fact that the altar he built, to bind his entire family to the Will of God within his life, was the burnt offering of Isaac.
In this way, the historical representatives who came forth in the stead of God’s Will shouldered not only the responsibility of representing their age but even the responsibility of setting up a historical standard; so we must realize that before them there were, without fail, trials and persecutions proportionally.
The Formula of the Providence of Restoration
The course of restoration is these seven stages: individual, family, clan, people, nation, world, and cosmos. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven—seven stages, is it not? (Writing on the board.)
In God’s carrying on the providence of restoration up to now, the greatest problem is setting up this unchanging Will. This will not change for all time. In setting up the individual before this Will, a heart corresponding to this height (the family) was required.
In setting up the family, only after applying a trial to the degree that it does not hinder the individual’s living—that is, to the degree of not dying—did He at last let the individual set out as a family.
Look closely at the providence of restoration. God, in giving a blessing, without fail, has one collide with an environment and gives the blessing only when one has won there. This is why Abraham, shouldering above him the responsibility of setting up God’s Will and at his side the responsibility of the environment, overturned through it all.
Seen centered on the Will, Abraham had to set up the will corresponding to her (the family). Abraham could be made one at any time with the Will God had set up. And there was no one but Abraham who could make a foundation of the individual and the family centered on the Will.
This is why Abraham, who faced the Will, came to receive the trial of the individual and, at the same time, even the trial of the family. Why? Because after winning individually, one must set out as a family, God had Abraham, the individual, receive even the family-level trial as he set out. In this way, the person who receives the blessing of Heaven, without fail, receives not only the individual trial but even the family trial.
For an individual to prepare an environmental foundation on which he can stand centered on the family, there must without fail be a family, grounded in the individual, to undergird it.
So Abraham, while holding the Will and living, had to live a life that leaned to neither side—neither to the family nor to the Will.
Next, he likewise had to take action that leaned to neither side. Action means the pointing of a direction. When the environment was disordered, and he could not stand before the Will, he had to set that environment in order.
When the enemy attacked, he had again to meet it. Abraham, in such an environment, held the Will and, on the stage of life, took the action of a pioneer.
And because he was in a position of going forward, shouldering the responsibility of a world-historical representative, he had to receive attacks from at least three peoples. Had he been subdued and fallen there, the meaning is that he could not have set up the Will.
Looking at our countless historical forefathers who went for the sake of the Will, what was the final responsibility and mission by which one could be settled as an eternal victor before God?
It is the Will, the Will. The eternally unchanging Will. This is why, though I die, this Will at least remain. So the life and action that can make this Will shine are absolute.
God places this Will in the environment. He has set up individuals at historical intervals and paved the foothold of the chosen people. That is the history of Jacob’s time. Centered on the individual Jacob, He equipped a family-level foundation of victory and then formed the Israelite people.
Jacob, entering the land of Haran, paved the foothold of a people while making the family-level foundation of blessing all the more firm. He always prepared one stage in advance. If one receives the blessing without preparation, one breaks apart at once.
In setting up a standard of blessing, if it is the individual, there is a trial as the individual, and if it is the family, there is a trial as the family.
If it is the clan, there is a trial as the clan, and if it is the people, there is a trial as the people. Therefore, to seek and establish one individual, one must, without fail, pass through a family-level trial, and to establish a family, one must pass through a clan-level trial.
For Jacob too, to set up a clan-level standard, one must pass through a people-level trial; to set up a people-level standard, one must pass through a national-level trial; and to set up a national-level standard, one must without fail pass through a worldwide trial. This is the formula in the providence of restoration.
When He Seeks to Unfold a New History
Then how will God, to set up one individual and one family in this satanic world and let them settle that foundation, act?
To bring on a fight, He does not make the whole of the families of this satanic world unite and consolidate into a bound-together position. He makes their tradition, custom, and attitude all grow thin and then brings on the fight.
Then, because everyone is uncomfortable, many people come to reexamine the environment they have lived in until now and come to seek something new.
Heaven has made such an environment and, setting up one individual here, has brought on the fight with the satanic world.
Then, because the satanic realm is in a disordered environment, when at that time a person appears who, strong and bold, holds a will that is for the whole, holds an attitude that thinks for the whole, and acts for the whole, the side of Satan, without their even knowing it, naturally comes in around that person and comes to defend that environment. It is because it is better than their will, better than their attitude to life, and better than their actions.
If it is a family, the family likewise, and if it is a clan, the clan likewise, passes through such an environment and develops toward the world of worldwide purpose. This is why, even looking at the history of the Israelite people, it is all fighting.
Up to now, the Israelite people, in facing the providential Will, were full of every kind of fighting. In Abraham’s time too, enemies appeared and blocked the path he went; and in Jacob’s time it was likewise.
When Jacob served as a hired hand in Laban’s house for twenty-one years, though Laban deceived him ten times over, he endured it and passed those twenty-one years, and so could establish a family-level foundation of victory.
At that time, because Laban and his daughters were not one, Rachel could steal and bring away her father’s idols. When Moses sought to set out a people, it was likewise.
When He seeks to unfold a new history, God without fail throws the satanic world into disorder. Only after that does He set up a new historical center. The reason is to make an environment in which the side of Satan can defend the side of God.
Seen from this standpoint, how will God carry on the providence today, at the close of the twentieth century, to set up a world-historical Will?
If it is democracy, the thought and tradition democracy boasts of, and if it is communism, the thought and tradition communism boasts of, collide with each other so that division arises. The nearer the closing age draws, the more He prepares, behind the side of Satan, an environment that can defend God’s Will, to set up the worldwide Will.
That Will is not a will for some individual, nor a will for some family. Nor is it a will for some clan alone, a will for some people alone, a will for some nation alone, or a will for the present world on the globe alone. That Will is a will for the greater whole of the Cosmos. This is why Will is broad and great, and that much the more valuable.
This is why people who hold such a will cannot move individually. They cannot move by the family and cannot move by any clan. Nor can they move centered on any people, any nation, or any worldwide ideology whatever.
They must move centered only on God’s Will. We must realize that there is a providence of God who seeks to set up that Will at the end of the world. Among our forefathers, the one who set up the individual-level Will as its representative was Abraham; the one who set up the family-level Will as its representative was Jacob; the one who set up the people-level Will as its representative was Moses; and the One whom God set up upon this earth as the representative of the worldwide Will was Jesus.
Jesus’ coming to this earth was not a coming for the Jewish nation alone. The Jewish people, because there was Moses’ testament, held, even in the pitiable position of being a vassal of Rome and oppressed for four thousand years, the conviction that “when the Messiah comes, all nations will surrender and be loyal before us.”
But Jesus came to save the world, using the Jewish people as a foothold; he did not come for the Jewish nation alone. He came for the Will of God, to realize the nation of God; the meaning is that he did not come for the Jewish people alone.
God’s Will, Which Transcends History
The nation of God is heaven and earth—that is, heaven and earth gathered.
The people of God mean the whole of the spirit people in the spiritual world and humankind living upon the earth.
On earth, in the case of a single nation, those who live within that nation’s territory are called its people, and the land within its borders is called its territory; but the nation of God, centered on God, takes the whole of heaven and earth—that is, the formless world and the formed world—as its territory.
And it takes as the people of the heavenly nation the countless spirit people who came to this earth as human beings and lived centered on God and passed on, and the people living today in the present age centered on God, and even the countless descendants who will exist in generations to come. Because this is an eternally unchanging cosmic Will, no one can deny it.
So you must become people-centered on such a will and such an ideal. And because it is the greatest point of purpose that all the beings of the Cosmos commonly desire, once that point alone appears, the universe can be unified.
It would be the same with you, but today, if you ask the countless people, “What is your desire?” fine or plain, they all answer that it is to become president. They say they would conquer the world, that they would do as they please with heaven and earth. The greed of human beings is great. That the minds of human beings became so is because they were born within the ideal and the realm of the relationship behind it.
That Will God set up is a will heaven and earth desire, a will that no one of humankind, generation after generation, would refuse. It is a will that the sages and noble ones who came and went in the past also love, a will that the countless statesmen who lead nations in this present age also love, a will that our descendants too will love.
Thus God’s Will transcends historicity. This is why, whether within such an age-realm or such an ideal-realm today, God comes seeking the human being who carries out responsibility for the sake of such a Will; He does not come seeking some individual human being or some individual family, some individual people, or some individual nation.
Jesus, too, came to save the world, using the Israelite people as a foothold; he did not come for the Israelite people alone. Then why has Christianity gathered the gentile religions? It is because there is a worldwide Will.
Seen from the providential standpoint, if Jesus came to this earth representing such a heavenly Will, he had to take life actions that could draw the enormous prototype corresponding to the whole Will. He had to carry out world-historical responsibility.
Yet he went without fully carrying out that responsibility. This is why, for two thousand years up to now, He has been fighting. Seen from this standpoint, the individual must carry out the family-level standard and responsibility, the family the responsibility of the clan-level standard, the clan the responsibility of the people-level standard, the people the responsibility of the national-level standard, and the nation the responsibility of the worldwide standard. The one who comes shouldering all such standards of responsibility is the Messiah.
Then what must the Messiah, who can gather this world, come to this earth and do, and how?
He must go forward, setting up a life standard that can complete the individual-level Will, a life standard that can complete the family-level Will, a life standard that can complete the clan-level Will, and a life standard that can uphold and set up the people-, national-, and worldwide-level Will.
It is because the Messiah is a personal synthesis who must unfold upon history a form that synthesizes all the standards of the providence as the representative of the vertical providence.
Therefore, Jesus was a representative who could bring to completion, as a worldwide standard, the individual Will that Abraham sought and set up, and a representative who could set up, as a worldwide family, the family-level Will that Jacob set up.
The trial and suffering that the clan, the people, or the nation underwent were, in that time, within that national boundary; but when crossing the national boundary into the worldwide realm, to prepare a world-historical foundation, Jesus had to set up an indemnity standard upon all the horizontal foundations the forefathers of the past had set up and then unfold it entirely.
So what did Jesus have to do during the thirty years of his private life?
He had to gather history. Centered on the family of Joseph, he had to gather history. The meaning is that he had to set out centered on the family of Joseph.
Centered on the family of Joseph, gathering his relatives, he had to become a model among the clan and so become the direct blood lineage—that is, the head heir—whom God could bless. And this heir was to set up a model standard and unfold Jesus’ ideal into a people-level thought and to digest not only Judaism but even the Jewish nation.
Yet Jesus could not carry out that responsibility. In the thirty-year course of his private life, Jesus had to gather the tradition of Judaism and of the Israelite people. But because he could not do so, there was no choice but to leave home.
Something New Must Come Forth
First, it is because Joseph’s family failed to fulfill its responsibility; second, it is because John the Baptist, the clan-level representative, failed to fulfill his responsibility.
The meaning is that Joseph did not fulfill the family-level responsibility, and John the Baptist did not fulfill the clan-level responsibility.
John the Baptist of that time, as the representative of the clan, ought to have rallied together all of Jesus’ relatives and set up one inner standard. And, centered on that, he ought to have made a model organization and so brought great disorder upon the thought of Judaism.
It was because of such a mission that John the Baptist came forth and said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
The Jewish society of that time, despised by Rome and in a state of ruin, could not but be divided in terms of age.
Since the priests of Judaism played the part of Rome’s lackeys, it could not be otherwise. In such a situation, to gather the people, the historical tradition the priests had set up until then was not enough.
The meaning is that something new, which could rally them all together, had to come forth. God carries on the providence after making a foundation of thought that can give rise to such an innovation.
So a special prophet like John the Baptist came forth and made a declaration unprecedented in the age. This is why, at that time, all the Jewish believers ought to have set up John the Baptist as the representative of the clan and, by making him a head heir who could move the people, set up a national-level standard.
That was the work that ought to have been accomplished during Jesus’ thirty-year course of private life, but it came to nothing.
We fallen human beings must become an individual-level resurrected being, a family-level resurrected being, a clan-level resurrected being, a people-level resurrected being, a national-level resurrected being, and a worldwide resurrected being.
This is why Jesus, only by standing in a life centered on God’s Will, in the position of the synthesized substance of the individual, family, clan, people, and nation horizontally—only by standing upon such a standard—could, as the substance of all resurrection, inherit everything historical and appear as the resurrected being of the age. But because the foundation of inheritance on which historical real authority could be set up collapsed, Jesus had to set out again. Such content is not in the Bible.
The Life of Trial and Indemnity Jesus Underwent
Then where must Jesus’ individual start begin from?
The family. In Judaism, had the priests, the scribes, or the teachers of the Law become a foundation for Jesus the individual, Jesus would have prepared a family-level foundation. And had splendid families become Jesus’ family-level foundation, Jesus would have rallied all those families together and prepared a clan-level foundation, and a people-level foundation, and even a national-level foundation, and then set up a historical tradition upon it. But because he could not, Jesus came to be placed in a wretched environment.
Christians today say, “Oh! Jesus’ three disciples; oh! Jesus’ twelve apostles—but where are there such failures?
It was so dire that the Son of God came to this earth and went about seeking fishermen. There was a historical distress in that.
Why was it that, although the leaders of the Jewish nation, established by thousands of years of toil, were awaiting the Messiah, there was not a single proper disciple when the Messiah came?
Was there a true disciple before Jesus?
At that time, a chief priest who had shouldered four thousand years of history—a chief priest like Caiaphas, greater than Abraham—and such people ought to have become Jesus’ disciples and set up an external standard.
But because that did not happen, Jesus had to go, shouldering all the trials of a representative of the people who stood in the stead of the whole four thousand years of history and all the suffering of a representative in life.
My friends, you must realize such content. Jesus’ life was not the kind of life of merely eating and living. It was a life of living, shouldering all historical burdens while undergoing distress inwardly and outwardly. But in the end, Jesus, by dying on the cross, did not fully realize the Will and realized the Will only spiritually, and that is precisely the history of spiritual salvation. Then what is Jesus doing up to today?
To set up the standard of living horizontally, centered on the whole Will—that is, the life standard of trial and indemnity—one must make a fence that can guarantee that life, so one must push forward on the practical side.
One must live a life for the sake of making a fence. Yet Christianity today has not become a religion of life.
Then what has Christianity done for these two thousand years up to now?
Inheriting Jesus’ Will, it took as its goal Jesus’ family-level ideal and his clan, people, national, and worldwide ideal, and pioneered, surrounding that boundary. That is the history of Christianity up to now.
Seen centered on the mission of restoration, what have Jesus and the Holy Spirit done for two thousand years, centered on God?
The history of Christianity up to now is a history of struggling spiritually, in the physical world, to realize God’s Will.
Had the Christians inherited, in the individual-level period, all the foundations Jesus historically paved, there would have been no need at all for an individual-level fight. There would have been no need at all for a family-level fight either.
They would only have needed to inherit the standard of Jesus already set up at the clan level, but because they killed Jesus, they had to fight again. This is why, up to now, Christianity has carried on a horizontal providence.
Centered on the great ideal of the vast universe that was the center of Jesus’ stage of life and on that unchanging Will, it has unfolded the living individual, family, clan, people, nation, and world.
Even so, this is not the ideal of a substance that joins spirit and body. It is an ideal centered only on the spiritual. It is the ideal of dying and going to the Kingdom of Heaven. That will not do.
One must realize the Will joining spirit and body. Our forefather Abraham, as an individual-level representative, received the trial of both spirit and body. Moses, the representative of the people, was likewise. Our countless forefathers fought Satan, joining spirit and body; they did not fight only spiritually.
But because the Israelite nation was set up in substance, and Judaism was set up in substance, all broke apart by reason of killing Jesus, Jesus realized the Will only spiritually.
The religion that took the place of Judaism at this spiritual standard is today’s Christianity. And because this closing age has reproduced spiritually the environment of the time when Jesus came, the work of Christianity scattered throughout the whole world today is to carry out, at the spiritual standard, the mission of Judaism before the Lord who is to come again.
Just as, when Jesus came, great disorder arose in the thought of Judaism and the environment became one in which the tradition was shaken, you must realize the fact that the Last Days, when the same phenomenon as then will arise in the thought of Christianity today, are drawing ever nearer.
The Victory of the Physical Standard That Remains
Then what must the Christians of the whole world, who up to now have gathered this spiritual standard, do hereafter?
They must set up the worldwide physical standard. Only then can the Lord, who comes joining spirit and body, win.
Now, hereafter, the countless religions too will enter the fortune of unification. Individually, they split apart, but the meaning is that they all enter the fortune of unification.
Buddhism, too, makes a worldwide fence called a headquarters and comes to say, “Let us unify,” and Christianity, too, though individually it splits apart beyond words, holds world conventions and the like, so that its boundary grows ever larger.
So one must break right through that fence and enter. Because God has made an environment in which, if one pulls but a single strand, the whole can be drawn out, one need only break through and enter. God has carried on such a history up to now.
The merit of the toil our prophets of every generation poured out before God’s Will has, even into this closing age, not yet had its final, decisive victory determined.
Had Jesus, upon this earth, indemnified and cleared away all historical sin, joining spirit and body, and inherited the historical legacy and paved a foothold of victory for the age, he would have set up a perfect standard of victory; but because he could not, and from a position where spirit and body were split apart, he carried out only the spiritual mission; the physical standard remains up to now.
Therefore, the merit of the historical forefathers, who toiled with spirit and body, has still not reached its conclusion. To put it again, the meaning is that, though the countless forefathers of the past won individually, won at the family level, and won at the clan and people level, they have still not prepared a foundation on which they can appear before the world centered on a national-level ideal. Do you understand what this means?
Therefore, the mission of the Christian is to pave the physical foundation. The foundation that Abraham, Jacob, and Moses paved, joining spirit and body—Jesus was to have linked it and prepared a foundation of victory joining spirit and body; but because he paved only the spiritual foundation of victory and did not prepare the physical foundation of restoration, the physical standard remains. This is why Christianity today must prepare a physical foundation of victory.
Upon this earth today, one nation and one world centered on Jesus have not been established. My friends, you must realize this.
Why does Jesus come again?
Do you say he comes to gather the people who believe well and ride up into the air on a cloud and hold a wedding feast? No. He comes to unify all under heaven.
Does he come to die and go to the Kingdom of Heaven?
Originally, had human beings not fallen, this earth would be the Kingdom of Heaven on earth just as it is.
So he comes to make a heavenly kingdom upon the earth, to make the people living upon the earth into people of the Kingdom of Heaven, and to set up the sovereignty of goodness upon the earth.
Do you say he comes riding a cloud to lift the people who believe well up into the air and hold a wedding feast? It is not so. It is not arranged that way.
Up to today, there is no final victor before the Will. Jesus also set up only the standard of spiritual victory; he did not set up a standard of victory joining spirit and body, so he could not become the final victor.
Because Jesus, having no choice, died on the cross, Abraham too could not become the true Abraham, Jacob too could not become the true Jacob, and Moses too could not become the true Moses. The forefathers of every generation all failed to become true forefathers.
The meaning is that there has still not come forth a person who, as the representative of the true Abraham, has set up an individual-level standard of victory joining spirit and body; a person who, as the representative of the true Jacob, has set up a family-level standard of victory joining spirit and body; a person who, as the representative of the true Moses, has set up a people-level standard of victory joining spirit and body; or a person who, representing the nation, has set up a standard of victory. Jesus was to have set up that standard, but did Jesus conquer the nation?
Did he subdue the Jewish nation and Judaism?
He could not. The meaning is that he was driven by the sovereignty of the Jewish nation and died; he did not rule the Jewish nation. So he did not set up a national-level standard of victory, joining spirit and body.
For this reason, Jesus comes again to this earth, and having come, what will he do? He comes to unfold the national-level standard of victory, joining spirit and body into a worldwide form, and in one stroke to make one nation, one world, one Cosmos centered on God. This is the thought of the Second Advent.
The Person Heaven Requires
Then why did the Unification Church come forth?
On the providential course, God requires a final victor joining spirit and body. He requires a victor representing the family and a victor representing the clan. This is why the Unification Church has come forth today to make such a band of victors.
Seen from this standpoint, what must we do today, and how?
We must keep Jesus’ place. What was it that Jesus gazed upon in that time? It was the Jewish nation and the Jewish church. He sought, using the Jewish nation and the Jewish church as a foothold, to carry on a worldwide providence. But because that collapsed, the Christians scattered throughout the whole world today must go forth to such a place.
In Jesus’ stead, they must stand in a position where they can judge the whole nation. Only then can the Lord, when he comes again, carry on a worldwide providence the moment he comes; otherwise, one must suffer all over.
Without a foothold, even God can do nothing.
Why has God toiled for six thousand years?
If no one has set up a standard by which he can escape the conditions of Satan’s accusation, even God can do nothing. In the same way, before Jesus set up an absolute standard in the satanic world by which he could escape all of Satan’s conditions of accusation and carry on the providence in the stead of the nation, he could not stand in a worldwide position.
Then what must we, who have come forth bearing the ideal of unification in the stead of Christianity today, do?
Jesus had the mission and responsibility of removing evil by action and setting up a national-level standard upon this earth, joining spirit and body. But he could not carry out that responsibility. It was so dire that he entered the Temple in Jerusalem and overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold doves.
This is why the Unification Church has come forth: to make people who, holding the conviction that they can fight inwardly and outwardly before God’s Will and clear away evil, pave a firm foundation in their lives and fight on steadily to prepare the foundation for building the Kingdom of Heaven, the hope of tomorrow.
Then how have all the historical providential stages been inherited and carried on? The greater the scope, the more, in life, one comes into contact with the enemy corresponding to that scope.
If one must carry out a people-level or national-level mission, one collides with the countless enemies corresponding to the people and the nation. Yet God requires a person who, just as David, undaunted in the least before that mighty force, struck the head of the captain Goliath with a sling and a stone, holds the conviction that “God is with me” and would expel Satan from this globe.
The meaning is that one must not believe in the manner of whether there will be a God or not, or whether one will go to the Kingdom of Heaven or not. God requires a person who can fight to build the Kingdom of Heaven. In this age, such a person is needed.
The person Jesus sought in Jesus’ time, too, was such a person. At that time, God had made every preparation so that one could become, not only spiritually but physically too, an individual-level victor who could stand in the stead of Abraham, a family-level victor who could stand in the stead of Jacob, a people-level victor who could stand in the stead of Moses, or a national-level victor.
The meaning is that He had made an environment in which one could confront the great enemy, Rome. So had the Israelite people united, centered on Jesus and become one body, one heart, the matter would have unfolded from there.
The things that, four hundred years later, Christianity received Rome’s public recognition, or that Rome collapsed, would have been accomplished in that time.
But because Jesus died on the cross and so set up only the standard of spiritual victory, the individual-level standard Abraham set up, the family-level standard Jacob set up, and the people-level standard Moses set up all came to remain at the standard of spiritual victory.
The Place That Will Shoulder the Final Responsibility of the Providence of Restoration
Then, where will the place be that shoulders the final responsibility of this providence of restoration hereafter?
It is not a nation that boasts of its renown before the world.
The meaning is that it is not a nation like America. God makes such a great nation and then, setting up within it a tiny nation, carries on the providence. Why? Because a great band is difficult to unite, and so hinders the providence of restoration.
So he makes an environment that can be united. Outwardly, he has ideological disorder arise, and inwardly, he creates a living environment that can be united.
He is one religiously disordered and made to suffer persecution in life, blocking entirely the path forward. In this respect, a nation like Korea fits exactly. So I think.
Just wait and see. Hereafter, a harsh time will come when it will be hard even to get a single meal. This is not a mistaken thought. The meaning is that a time will come when, by human strength, nothing can be done.
The meaning is that, however splendid the things splendid people set up, a time will come when they perish all the same.
So one must cast off the attitude of life that seeks to live well and to rise in the world and go down to a place of saying, “Though I perish, I will save this nation.” However fine one is, eventually, one is bound to step down with no choice. It is the same for anyone.
Then how must one act to save this nation?
Because the thought and the life up to now were all wrong, one must forsake them all and do a new work that exists nowhere in the world. Those who lived clutching their bellies, seeking to live well, must seal their mouths, and those who sought to dress well, fine bodies that loved fine dress, must put on rags.
One must live in reverse. Those who loved to be praised by others must take abuse. By this, a movement to save this nation and save this world must arise in Korea. Then there is hope. The Unification Church today has guided you so, in preparation for that time.
People who, if they miss even a single meal, get hollow eyes and say they are dying—and a week’s fast? Yet if one comes into the Unification Church, one must fast for a week. Because I did it, you too must do it. Because I lived in prison, you too must, even recklessly, live in prison. It is because our forefathers, centered on one Will, so fought, so lived, and so acted.
To set up again the historical tradition the forefathers established, one must go forth to a place where Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and Jesus can be moved and shed tears, saying, “Even in a forlorn place you uphold the nation and uphold Heaven with such dignity! I have never seen a person like you. I will invoke a blessing upon you.” The meaning is that one must stand in a place where the historical forefathers can say, “You have made me weep.”
God requires of you, of the Unification Church, that you become representatives of Abraham. Whether in the life one lives centered on the Will or in action, you must make Abraham take an example from you; you must not follow Abraham.
By this, you must make Abraham in the spiritual world, gazing upon you, shed tears. And when Jesus gazes upon you, you must make him able to testify to you, saying, “Even among my disciples there was no one like this.”
Had there been such disciples in Jesus’ time, Jesus would not have said,
“Though I have many things to say, I fear you cannot bear them.”
How forlorn and wretched a saying this is!
Jesus of Love, Jesus the Judge
The person speaking here, when he reads such a passage of scripture, does not simply pass over it.
Even if it takes ten years to turn a single page, he settles the matter and then passes on. Had the Christians of today come forth in such a posture, the world would already have been unified.
Communism entered into Christianity, and a part of Christianity, from a biased position, even came to accept that ideology—which is something not even to be conceived. For that reason, the Christians of today have come to suffer environmentally.
In this sense, although communism hinders the providence of the Will in many ways, Heaven set up communism because it is needed to make the providential Will firm from behind.
Hereafter, you must stand upon the historical tradition and become the final victors. To do so, you must receive historical trials. You must stand in a place where, when Abraham gazes upon it, he can shed tears.
Abraham brought the spiritual restoration to completion, but he did not bring to completion the physical side—that is, the substantial restoration joining spirit and body. Moses, too, was likewise.
That he forsook the palace of Egypt, which loved him and protected him, was for the sake of Heaven’s providence; it was not because he disliked glory. He thought to die gloriously for the sake of Israel. It was not because he disliked a dazzling, splendid life that he forsook Pharaoh’s court, but because he thought to lead out the Israelite people and make a nation finer than Egypt. Only one who has such a mind becomes a leader.
For the sake of the day when he could lead out the pitiable Israelite people oppressed by Egypt and, in reverse, rule over Egypt—for the liberation of his homeland—his heart burned.
Seen humanly, he was in an exceedingly wretched position, but Moses, ablaze with public indignation over the difficult past of his homeland, held an ambition and a sense of conquest to conquer Egypt.
Because he was so—because he had the temperament to fight Pharaoh—God set up Moses as the representative of the people. God loves such a temperament.
You cry out, “Jesus of love,” but Jesus is the Jesus of love before pitiable people, while before people who make a practice of injustice and evil, he is the Judge without forgiveness.
Before pitiable fishermen, tax collectors, or such people as harlots—that is, the band rejected and driven in that age—in the place where, prostrate, they pour out a plea that pierces the marrow, he is the Jesus of love; but before such bands as the Roman Empire and the Jewish officials, who took up the sword against the band that poured out devotion to walk the path of justice, he was the Judge.
Before beloved sons and daughters, he is the Jesus of love, but before the villains who do injustice and evil, he is the Judge of public righteousness.
If Jesus were only the Jesus of love, then the history of judgment in the closing age, of which Christianity today speaks, ought not to exist. The Jewish officials all went to hell.
If, on earth, you do not know whether this is so, go to the spiritual world, and you will know.
Jesus came as a fighter, as a revolutionary, but because he went without being able to carry out the revolution, it is a thing of han (한).
You must clearly realize the fact that, though he came holding the authority to judge the satanic world, he could not carry out the judgment in Jesus’ han.
The Final Victor Has Not Yet Come Forth
This person speaking here, though he has a mouth, does not speak. Though there is much han piercing him before these people, he endures. This is not because the Teacher is spineless.
The Teacher is not a man without bones. It is because, knowing that Jesus endured his some-thirty-year life and knowing that it is the path of restoration that God, for two thousand years after Jesus, has endured and labored anxiously to pave a firm foundation to prepare the foothold and the time for realizing the Will, that he endures. He endures, saying, “Blow, typhoon; blow, snowy winter wind; come, three months of deep winter (冬三朔).”
Such things are bound to pass in time. It is the same with those in society today who boast of their happiness. They are bound to pass.
Then what is the Teacher’s responsibility?
When driven and pursued, when going into prison, what must this Teacher do in that place?
He must be struck for the sake of the world’s humankind and draw in all the world’s suffering and annihilate it. He even took suffering as a matter of course, saying, “In pioneering the path of the world’s suffering, how could there not be at least this much hardship?” It is not because I am inadequate.
Because the history of the providence of restoration must, of necessity, settle the matter in such a place and turn one page—because that is the historical content of the providence of restoration—I sought to go such a path, and because such a person was required, I founded the Unification Church.
So the young men and women gathered here, even with their eyes closed, must be able to see through and discern this globe and the Cosmos. Though clad in shabby beggar’s rags so that the figure is forlorn, though life is wretched, one must live with even a heart that can't, treading over that life and rising, pressing down even the top of the White House where America’s President Johnson lives in dazzling splendor.
The time will surely come. God, too, gazes toward one time of judgment and comes to set up the law of public righteousness.
So you, too, today must resolve upon a self grounded in justice and, to pave a firm historical foothold, must yield your place to no one. You must not yield even to our forefathers, Abraham or Moses. It is the same with Jesus.
You must become a person with the conviction to say, “Let even Jesus and Moses stand behind me.”
Would God not plead earnestly before such a person? Such a person is needed. Only such a person can become the historical final victor, the final victor who will stand before the providence.
Because his disciples did not pave such a foundation, Jesus went, living out his some-thirty-year course of life distressed, bearing even their responsibility. You, who today stand in the same position as Jesus’ disciples, must not, when you gaze upon this people, gaze as upon another’s people.
The Republic of Korea is not another nation. This land is not another’s land. This world is yours; this land is yours.
So you must manage this land well and bequeath it well to the worldwide nation to be realized hereafter, become a people fit for that nation, and set up a sovereignty fit for that nation, which can stand in the stead of the Will God has set up, and unify the world. You must well realize that you must thereby offer it up before God.
Though it is the original responsibility of the countless nations to attend God from such a position, the individual sets up a different will as the individual, the family as the family, the people as the people, and the nation as the nation. But because God’s Will, rather than such an individual’s will, a family’s will, or a people’s or nation’s will, is the principle, all come to be judged before that Will.
At this time, when the one day of the resolution of han (해원) of heaven and earth, on which a public Will must be set up, draws near before us, is there a person who can become the vanguard of the consummation of the resolution of han (해원성사), feel God’s pain and sorrow, and enter into the heart of bitter resentment piercing God’s breast, and, when he says, “Is this not the circumstance over which Thou hast shed tears, and the heart of bitter resentment piled up within Thy breast?
I know it and comfort Thee, so resolve it,” God can say, “Yes, my son, my daughter, thank you for knowing it.” And has there come forth in history a final victor who has so comforted God? There has not. There has not.
So it is to do that work that Jesus comes. I understand it so. The Lord at the Second Advent comes to carry out such a mission, not to cry out only for what is glorious.
Only after carrying out such a mission fully—rendering full filial piety as a son, receiving God’s public recognition, and being equipped with the title of loyal subject—does he at last go forth to the place of glory.
What work have Jesus and the Holy Spirit done up to now?
They have done the kind of work of going to sinners and washing their soiled rags. Is it because Jesus and the Holy Spirit love sinners that they did so? To be left clearing up after sinners! How wretched it is!
Why have Jesus and the Holy Spirit, who have no bond and no concern with sin, formed a bond with sin and overturned it?
It is because they must become parents. Because the children living upon the earth have all formed a bond with sin, they do so with no choice.
What does Jesus have to do with sin?
The meaning is, why must Jesus—the Son of God, the great Sovereign who is to indemnify and forgive sin—do such work? It is a grievous and infuriating thing.
The Person God Needs
Is there a man who appears upon this earth today in the stead of God, in the stead of Jesus, in the stead of the Holy Spirit, and says, “I will take responsibility for the sin of this world, so God, rest”? There is not.
The meaning is that there has not appeared a person who can say, in the stead of this nation, “Father, do not worry,” or, “In the stead of this world and humankind, Father, do not worry.”
The One who comes bearing such responsibility is the Lord at the Second Advent.
What use is it to work miracles in the name of the Lord?
What use is a prophet? Is it the very noun “miracle” or “prophet” that God desires? Miracles are with God. God Himself is the prophet.
A filial son who will resolve the historical han piercing God’s breast is what is needed; is an errand-runner who merely works miracles the issue? My friends, you must realize this. A filial son is needed.
God’s providence is to seek a filial son. Because God has shed tears for six thousand years, a filial son is needed who can feel the pain of those six thousand years and shed tears. And a loyal subject who can do so is needed.
Just as it is the way of a loyal subject to remove the king’s worry, before God too such a loyal subject is needed.
What use is it to perform signs and wonders?
What use is it to show mercy?
Such things are all with God. The only thing not with God is one person who can resolve the bitter resentment piercing His breast. The meaning is that there is no one person to resolve the han of six thousand years.
The meaning is that there is no one to draw out that nail of sorrow driven into God’s breast by Adam’s fall. The meaning is that there is no one to take hold of God and shed tears, saying, “Father, how has it come to this?” So a person must come forth who can draw out that nail Adam could not draw.
It is to do that work that Jesus comes again. The meaning is gathering the individual, gathering the family, and gathering the clan, people, nation, and world; let us offer them up before the Father.
Yet when I look at the young people of our Unification Church today, their heads are rotten. Their thought is wrong.
So upon them the Son of God must appear and manifest upon this earth the holy ideal and holy Will Jesus held, manifest a holy attitude of life, and manifest holy action.
When Jesus was beaten and driven by the Roman soldiers, did he speak?
It was not because there was no thought in his breast. It is an infuriating and wrong thing. The person who can judge such historical han is the issue.
Where has the Will God sought to set up gone, where has the Will Jesus sought to set up gone, and where is the Will the Holy Spirit sought to set up by toiling for two thousand years?
That Will is a Will that can move the people and the world. And within that, the world is contained, the nation is contained, the people are contained, and the clan and family, even the individual, are all encompassed.
Can Christianity today encompass the whole world?
Can Christianity—which, pushed in from one corner of the world, driven and pursued and struggling, cannot even take its place and floats away adrift, and which became the center of democratic thought—encompass the world? Is that Jesus’ Will? My friends, take this to heart.
To Become the Final Victor
To become the final victor before the Will, one must be able to summon all the historical forefathers and say before them, “In bringing the consummation of the resolution of han (해원성사) to God’s han, I am the vanguard.”
Only then is there restoration. Because history fell and came down, one must climb back up. One must be restored. To do so, eventually, the heart becomes the issue.
You must know the reason God grieved most in history. Not the trifling kind of thing of having shed a tear in a single day, but for what reason He grieved when, in history, He sought and set up the individual, for what reason He grieved when He sought and set up the family, or for what reason He grieved when He sought and set up the clan, people, and nation—this you must know. And you must know for what reason the God who comes seeking this world in these Last Days today grieves.
Yet the human beings of today do not even know whether God exists or not. So how would they know what God’s heart is? That is the issue. One must know God’s heart.
This is why you today must charge forward before history. This world is the satanic world, so one must act entirely in reverse. In reverse of those who seek to eat well for themselves, one must not eat oneself but sacrifice.
If this world is left as it is, what will become of it? One must act in reverse.
So Jesus said,
“Sell all you possess and give relief to the poor!” “If you wish to eat, feed others.” “If you wish to be treated well, treat others well.”
But the minds of human beings seek to center on themselves and sacrifice others. Your minds, too, will be so. That must not be.
One must sacrifice for the family more than for oneself and sacrifice for the clan more than for the family. By this, when one family reaches a certain standard, that family must serve the whole of its relatives. Among relatives, there are all manner of people.
Some people quarrel and make a commotion. But one must set up a standard of having served the whole of them. And so, when the time comes, the one who served goes up to a high place. Glory is there at that time. The one who could not do so, in reverse, goes down to a place of perishing.
So Jesus, holding in his heart all the historical han, bore the cross at the center of the vertical and the horizontal. This is why all who follow Jesus must go the path of suffering to consummate the resolution of Jesus’ han. Here, the conclusion follows that Christianity must become a religion of historical sacrifice.
Otherwise, it cannot contribute to the world. It cannot lay a bridge on the path of Jesus, who comes again. The meaning is that it cannot lay even a bridge by which he can come again spiritually.
Therefore, Christianity comes to be struck from the individual up to the family, clan, and people. Even though Christianity has paved a worldwide foothold, when it enters a new nation, it suffers.
However, worldwide, wherever it has a foothold, when it enters a new nation, the individual of that nation persecutes it, the family persecutes it, the clan persecutes it, and the whole people persecute it. It comes to receive individual suffering, family suffering, clan suffering, and people suffering.
Christianity has, in the midst of such suffering, widened its worldwide foothold. To set up a people-level standard, one must fully carry out the clan-level mission and responsibility and bear even the family-level cross and the individual-level cross.
The conclusion follows that the greater the will one holds and the nearer the time draws, the more Christianity’s trials and persecutions are intensified. This is why it is said that in the Last Days, the one who endures to the end attains salvation.
Hereafter, from a religious-body position, an ism that can carry out such responsibility must come forth, and the person who holds that ism must take abuse and be trampled and driven and undergo all manner of things. That ism must be disliked both by democracy and by communism. Both established democracies and established communism must dislike it.
Such an ism is God-ism. The Unification Church has walked such a path up to now. Who asks us to witness to them? Tell them, if they would hear, hear; if they would not, let them not.
The Ism That Must Come Forth and the Ancestor of Heart
In giving, one must give from a place of shedding tears and blood and sweat. Even in giving a single gift, one must give with full devotion. The meaning is, give even while starving oneself, give even while shedding blood.
After giving well, one must receive well—this is the principle. This is why, if one has given well to the people and the people do not give, God is bound to give. This is an iron rule. Because Jesus too gave well, today the democracy of the world is centered on Jesus, within Jesus’ realm. The meaning is to give and receive.
There may be a difference in whether the period of receiving after giving is fast or slow, but the fact that if one has given, one will receive is an unfailing iron rule. So, give.
The person speaking here, when he went into the place of being beaten, thought thus. When beaten by the Communists, he thought he must not be servile and said, “You chief of Satan, who commands all under heaven, let us have at it”; and when beaten by the Jap brutes, he said, “I am a Korean who has appeared as the national-level Adam-type. Come, let us have at it.” He never once surrendered. Justice must not be servile. One must fight justly.
That I have not until now commanded you from such a position is because there has been no such person among you. But that I speak such words before you today is because I wish you to become final victors on the historical providential course.
You must become one who can summon Abraham and judge him. You must be able to summon even Moses and Jesus and press them, saying, “Why did you, at that time, fail to carry out this responsibility?”
And you must be able to receive from them the answer, “Yes, at that time I failed to carry out that responsibility.” My friends, have you pressed those people and received such an answer?
If you say you will only receive blessings and just sit still, can you receive blessings?
Among the people of this nation, too many have money, but do you think they made money just sitting still, by rough reckoning? Whether they amassed it unjustly or not, you must realize that, not sleeping at night, they toiled several times more than ordinary people.
As for this—all of you, having become idlers, do not toil, and all, mouths open, are saying, “Ah, give me blessing”; so what blessing would there be to enter? Such people all have the heart of a thief. They are utterly useless people. Such people are all people who must disappear.
This nation, this people, must make a bedrock at the very bottom of the world.
Among the bedrock, it must be the strongest bedrock. By this, using it as a foothold, it must make a band that can develop and consolidate even amid harsh trials.
This is the path our Unification Church must walk. Up to now, while receiving persecution, we have paved a worldwide foothold. It is the same now, too.
The Teacher is good at adventuring. That does not mean he ventures in a worldly way. He ventures to set up this Will in the spiritual world and the physical world. It is to give you a blessing. It is to add even my blessing to you that I make such a venture.
You must summon Abraham and make him shed tears and summon our historical forefathers and make them shed tears. And you must be able to resolve the han of the Jesus who came two thousand years ago, resolve the han of the God who sent Jesus, and resolve the han of Jesus’ disciples.
When you come to stand in a position where you can resolve the han of those three generations, the historical forefathers will bow their heads before you. When that happens, you become the ancestor of all of them.
Within God’s Will, who will be the ancestor of the heart?
Who will be the ancestor of the heart?
It is Jesus and the Unification Church members. Look. The Unification Church members, in the world of the heart, know the sorrow piercing God to the marrow.
They know God’s wrongness and indignation, and they know the God who holds the boldness to judge this enemy world in one stroke. In that sense, the meaning is that we, Unification Church members, are the ancestors of the heart.
Then, if Will and life and action are the final issues on the providential course, what have Jesus and the Holy Spirit done up to now?
On the practical side, they have toiled to make a worldwide fence.
So the Lord who comes too will, on the active side, say, “Satan, get back,” assert, and put into practice a new thought to do away with communism, which says there is no God. And God comes first, setting up a democracy that recognizes freedom of religion, of speech, of the press, and of assembly, and makes the path so that, upon that foundation of the Lord who comes, a new religion can be made and communism done away with. Only then can the Satanic forces not stir and be unable to oppose.
Do You Have the Confidence to Withstand the Heresies That Will Appear in the Last Days?
So in these Last Days, you must set yourselves before this worldwide mission and know in what position you yourselves are to stand.
You must become Jesus’ younger siblings. In the world, there is an uproar that the Unification Church’s Teacher Moon refers to the holy Jesus as “Jesus.”
It is because he has something with which he can say such a thing that he does so. Would that they heard only that. Hereafter, such people will come forth in abundance throughout heaven and earth. Heaven teaches if only one sets up the conditions.
In the end, there will even come forth people who say, “I am God myself,” people who say, “I am Jehovah,” people who say, “Even Jesus must worship me.”
My friends, do you have the confidence to withstand the heresies that will appear in the Last Days?
The meaning is, can you withstand people who say, “Unless you eat the milk and honey before me, you cannot become my sons and daughters,” or, “I am the mother of the Holy Spirit”?
Do you have the confidence to withstand the saying, “I am the bridegroom, so attend me”?
Do you have the confidence to withstand the saying, “I am Jehovah, so you must believe in me”? If you have no confidence, you are judged. God is seeking splendid sons and daughters. And He is seeking a Holy Spirit who can invoke joy and happiness before all people.
My friends, have you met such a Holy Spirit?
And God is seeking a prince who can ascend the throne as the victorious prince before Korea and all under heaven and command all people; have you attended such a prince?
Have you attended the God who, not seeing the fall of human beings, has realized the purpose according to the ideal of the creation of heaven and earth and abides on such a throne overflowing with glory and happiness and joy that will shine brilliantly forever and ever, for all ages?
God is seeking sons and daughters who can say before such a God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit, standing in such a position, “Is this not what You desire?”
A teacher originally wishes his disciple to do better than himself. However fine that disciple, no teacher says, “Hey, why are you finer than I? That must not be.”
If there is such a teacher, he perishes. A parent, too, wishes his sons and daughters to be better than himself. There would be no parent who, seeing a son who has done better than himself, says, “You must be less than I.”
If there were, he would perish. In one nation too, if the sovereign dislikes the people he rules doing well and cuts off their heads, that sovereign perishes. It is the same in the world of the heavenly principle. Such things are precisely the heart of a parent.
God is seeking. He is seeking sons and daughters who, going beyond the position of bearing the cross and lamenting for the people, can praise God’s glory and comfort God. Yet you say you will just believe and go to heaven? That is nonsense. Such people perish.
If that were so, the person standing here speaking would already have gone to the Kingdom of Heaven. How well I believed! I believed better than anyone. For I have believed for more than forty years of my life. But it is not so. That is nonsense.
Up to now, the Teacher has taken countless abuses. Even when going into prison, he went bearing every kind of curse.
If I have an enemy, this whole thirty million people are my enemy.
Our Unification Church members, when they go to the provinces, undergo all manner of things. Tell them to do as they please. The meaning is that we will be struck. Hereafter, in reverse, a time will come when, though our Unification Church tears and tramples them, they cannot stir. Because they have a condition of indemnity, they cannot stir. That does not mean we will tear and trample them. The meaning is that the path we must go is still this wretched and driven path.
Then what is the Unification Church, a place that does?
It is a place that teaches God’s Will. It is a place that teaches that the individual’s will is thus, the family’s will is thus, and the clan, people, national, and worldwide will is thus; and that, in saving the world, neither the will of democracy nor the will of communism will do—a will to which even the crippled and the maimed-armed can all come running and say, “That’s right,” a will all people love, that is, God’s Will.
Cosmos-ism
Then what kind of will is that, Will?
It is a will that can give infinitely and receive infinitely. It is a will that can give perfectly and receive perfectly, a worldwide will that can give well and receive well, a will by which one can always give and receive with the infinitely great and high and precious God. It is such a will that, when I shed tears, God can say, “Yes,” and comfort me.
The Unification Church is a place that seeks to make an active Christianity, a living Christianity. This is why it uses the noun “family members.” One must set up an active Christianity.
One must set up a Christianity that, fighting spiritually, pioneers the earth. By this, the earth and the spiritual world join their strength; one must build the Kingdom of Heaven upon the earth.
One must build the Kingdom of Heaven upon the earth, not build the Kingdom of Heaven in the spiritual world. The Unification Church is a place that seeks, on the active side and the living side, to cross over the trial of the cross and the path of death.
That does not mean it denies the spiritual world. The meaning is, let us inherit the spiritual world and set up an achievement.
By this, let us realize the desire of Jesus, who says,
“Speak in my stead the word I could not speak upon this earth,” and the desire of God, who says, “Teach in my stead what I could not teach upon the earth,”
and the desire of the Holy Spirit, who says,
“Carry out in my stead the mission I could not fully carry out.”
How good it would be if we could do so! Unlike the established churches, let us, on the active side, set up a spiritual standard upon the cross and build a living climate.
By this, let us make a living Christianity in which life itself can take the place of faith. Let us, on the living side, become sons and daughters of God of value.
Do you understand what this means?
What is it that all people must seek today?
It is one Will. That Will is a will that has existed together with God from before eternity, a will that existed before heaven and earth and all things were created, a will that existed before human beings existed upon this globe. And that Will is God’s supreme desire.
That Will cannot be forsaken even if one sacrifices the family, one that cannot be forsaken even if one loses one’s nation. Jesus, even while losing entirely the Israelite nation God had set up, died to set up that Will.
In what environment is this world today?
It is saying, “Is democracy the way to live, or is communism the way to live?” But neither of the two can be the way to live. Then what ism is our way to live? It is Cosmos-ism. Cosmos-ism alone is our way to live.
The Unification Church must set up this Cosmos-ism. So hereafter, in our Unification Church, we will gather such-and-such university professors and the presidents of this place and that and teach them. Just wait and see.
If the Unification Church, born in Korea, is trampled by history, history is finished. This is why one must tread over history and rise. And if one is trampled by thought, that thought is finished. This is why one must tread over thought and rise. One must tread over even the family by oneself and rise.
One must be able to drag along entirely the founders of religions who say they will not go and be able to drag along all the people who believe in Buddhism and the people who believe in Jesus.
If the Unification Church is to build the Kingdom of Heaven, it must do so. Because I knew such things, I have come down to this day, even while taking abuse.
What I Wish to Emphasize to the Family Members
History develops. What I now wish to set forth and emphasize before you is, “Become the final victor before the Will.” As it turns out, Jesus did not fully carry out his responsibility.
You must lament that Jesus could not comfort God from a glorious place. By this, unbinding the bundle of sin of the human beings who have lived upon this earth up to now and clearing it all away, you must become ones who can comfort God, saying, “Is this not the purpose for which the Father sent me? How greatly didst Thou await the greeting of a day such as this today?”
To do so, one must know God’s Will. Jesus could not speak of that Will. So in the Unification Church, we say, please let us know the Will. The Principle! The Principle! The Principle! The meaning is, please let us know the Principle.
What is the Principle?
It is not a principle of science. It is the principle of becoming Jesus’ younger sibling, the principle of becoming Jesus’ elder sister. That is, it is the principle of becoming sons and daughters of God. It is also the principle of becoming God’s loyal subjects and faithful wives, God’s filial sons and filial daughters.
Every human being who has an original mind must become Jesus’ elder sister and younger sibling and must become a loyal man and loyal woman, a filial son and filial daughter before God.
Such a Principle of the Unification Church is the only Principle that existed neither in the past nor will exist in the future. In this respect, it is worth having boldness about.
It is a Principle that, fighting with the countless founders of religions in history, received God’s public recognition. My friends, you must realize this. Hereafter, in the not-distant future, a time will come when the Unification Church moves the world.
The Republic of Korea is not the issue. Our Principle, as a higher truth, a higher thought, a higher will, a higher view of life, and a higher view of action, is the resultant fruit of history and the age and the future that all people must follow.
When the Teacher first said, “Let us go on a three-year course,” my friends, you thought it was like a dream, did you not?
In that time, the Unification Church paid much sacrifice. Hereafter, too, much sacrifice will be required. If one does not remain here to the end, it is of no use at all. The number is not the issue. Value is the issue. One fragment of diamond is more valuable than thousands of glass bottles. This is why the Teacher whips you and drives you into hard places.
The Teacher still has a path remaining on which he must lead you. Together with you, he must fight, facing the whole world, and resolve the historical han and the bitter resentment engraved on God’s breast.
Ablaze with such public righteousness and public indignation, one must carry out the judgment of public righteousness, but how many will there be who can stand in such a place? This is the issue. This person speaking here may seem to be a person who has nothing, but he is a person who has something different from others.
The Teacher, when he prays, does not pray any other prayer. When he says “Father,” heaven and earth turn over. Within that word “Father,” there is a hidden tangle of grief. There is much of a tangle you do not know.
When one says one will take responsibility for this world as a loyal subject, as a filial son, before the Father, can one pray without tears? It is because the path of restoration, so full of han, remains that he is so.
Will, Life, and Action Backed by Heart
You must set up a Will and live together with that Will. You must live a life by which God can be moved, a life by which history can be moved, a life humankind must take an example from, a life descendants must follow.
And action must be strong and bold. Just as it was said to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous. Please keep in mind the historical God,” God counsels the central figure in advance to realize the providential Will.
When Heaven commands the fight with the enemy, it is bound to be won. If one sets up a worldly will and lives according to that will and acts according to that will, Satan invades there. This is why the kind of will one has set up is the issue.
A will publicly recognized in the world will not do. A life the world publicly recognizes will not do. One must set up a will that can be publicly recognized in terms of the heart.
The life of the Unification Church will be unknowable when the people of the world look upon it. They say it is strange. Seeing that one goes that path even while taking abuse, there is—though they do not know it—surely something there. When it is so, Satan cannot occupy it.
You must seek such a will. To set up that will, one must turn one’s back on the nation, turn one’s back on the ism one presently follows, and turn one’s back on the world. My friends, can you do so?
What kind of will is that, Will?
It is the Will of the heart hidden in God. All people must live together with this Will and take action that protects and defends this Will. Do you understand how you must set up your view of the Will, your view of life, and your view of action?
This will, and action must be backed by the heart. Centered on a historical heart, a heart of restoration, a heart of creation, a heart for all humankind—centered on such hearts—the will and life and action must be accomplished.
For Adam and Eve, the issue of the heart would have emerged only after they had passed through the stages of formation, growth, and completion and reached completion.
The meaning is that the issue of the heart comes forth only after completion. The central issue in the new age hereafter is the heart.
One must live centered on God’s heart. God’s heart is a heart of restoration, a heart of creation. Had there been no fall, there would have been no heart of restoration.
There would have been only a heart of glory. There would have been only a heart of creation that is good merely to behold. But because of the fall, the heart of restoration arose.
So one must realize that Will.
This is why you must, centered on God’s Will and centered on God’s ideal, resolve the heart of God, who has grieved on the course of restoration up to now.
Because Adam and Eve, failing to realize for God one day of glory, fell, you must realize it for Him. Backing the heart of restoration and the heart of creation, you must realize one day of glory before God.
Unity of Action, Unity of Life, Unity of Ideal, Unity of Heart
Up to now, because it has been a process of realizing the Will to be restored, one had to live according to the law of indemnity. The meaning is that we carried on a life of restoration to set up the law of indemnity, an action of restoration to set up the law of indemnity.
What is the life and action of restoration to set up this law of indemnity?
It is to strike one’s own body. It is to overcome oneself. It is to sacrifice and to serve.
Such things become more necessary the nearer one stands to the restored original world of the heart hereafter. That is the heart of creation.
Only one who can, from such a place, say, “Take an example from this heart,” can stand in a position to command. The One who comes to make it so that one can stand in such a position is the Messiah.
Only when that Will, together with a new ideal, spreads from the individual to the family, clan, people, nation, and worldwide, and, passing through a stage of new action of a new dimension, is integrated with all the existing beings upon this whole globe—only then is the Kingdom of Heaven on earth completed.
So our Unification Church asserts: let us make the countless human beings one. The meaning is, let us set up one Will, one view of life, and one view of action by which one can kick off the heart of restoration and enter the heart of creation.
This is why we assert “unity of action,” assert “unity of life,” assert “unity of ideal,” and assert “unity of heart.”
Centered on these four great principles, you must take the responsibility of unfolding the foundation of the Kingdom of Heaven from you, the individual, to the family, clan, people, and nation.
And further, you must take the responsibility of linking this world today to God from an intermediary position that can represent the people, represent the worldwide whole of humankind, or represent heaven and earth.
Then who will carry out the indemnity of the heart of restoration?
Have you ever been pierced by the heart of, I must indemnify?
Only after one has completely indemnified this heart of restoration can one know the heart of creation; otherwise, one can absolutely never know it. This is why you must set up one Will with the heart of restoration and live and act together with that Will.
You must realize that, gazing toward the heart of the creation of desire, there is the hidden effort of countless forefathers who overturn within the realm of the heart of restoration.
Since there is Heaven, you must become the foremost disciple of Jesus, who, even amid the overturning of countless peoples and countless nations, is not swept away, and before the storm is not broken, and can valiantly cross over even the cross of Golgotha. Only then can you become the historical final victor before the Will.
Were our hands torn into a thousand strands and ten thousand strands, if we could but take hold of the Father, how good it would be!
If our bodies grew greater and greater so that we could embrace the Father in our bosom, how happy that would be! If, when we bow our heads before the Father with an earnest mind, heaven and earth could bow their heads together, and if all of us could become Thy sons and daughters in such a position, how happy that would be!
If we could become sons and daughters who can live in a free heaven and earth, with no barrier between heaven and earth, so that we may go if we wish to go, stay if we wish to stay, come if we wish to come, how happy that would be!
Humankind does not know what tangle of grief unfolded in the world of the purpose of creation that the Father so desired, so we are full of bitterness, bitterness, bitterness.
Together with those gathered here, for three years we have shed tears, and shed sweat, and wept aloud. From deep in our breasts, we have appealed before the Father.
Did that result return to the Father’s bosom?
Or did it return to the breasts of these? We have come to know that it must not lie buried in the Father’s breast, nor lie buried in the breasts of these, but must return to this people and the world’s humankind and this earth and the whole of heaven.
Is there a true son or daughter who can fully carry out such a Will and mission and set it upon the worldwide stage?
If we say there is not, where is there a sorrow greater than this?
Father, at this hour we have gathered Thy sons and daughters and appeal before Thee, so guard the path they are to go. Up to now, they are unpracticed in the life of living for others’ sake. So grant that they may once more set their lives in order.
Grant that these may know how holy a life it is to live truly attending the Father, and grant that they may live together with the Father. And grant that these may know how holy a thing it is to live for the sake of others, and grant—we earnestly beseech and desire, Father—that these may know how holy a place it is to be able to pray for this people, shedding tears of blood and beating the ground.
And grant that these may know how holy an hour was that hour when, before the Father’s Will, together with tears of blood, dipping blood from their fingertips, they wrote the word “vow” on the wallpaper and vowed before the Father; and grant that, even while fighting, they may cry out “the unification of the people” and “the unification of the world” and appeal before Thee.
If, becoming covered in blood for the sake of Thy Will, and even in a place of collapsing in exhaustion in tattered, shabby clothes, we could hear the Father’s word saying, “I will be with you,” how happy that would be! Grant that we may know that that place is truly the holy Most Holy Place.
The course of restoration is so full of han—we have come to know it.
Coming to know the heart of restoration, we come to feel the bitterness of the Father, who up to now has held down the heart of creation and carried on the fight of restoration.
We desire to become true filial sons and filial daughters who take hold of such a Thee and truly comfort Thee. We desire to become true loyal subjects and loyal women.
Yet we must trample and strike ourselves who are not so. We must treat ourselves with contempt. We must conquer our minds and beat to pieces all the attributes of Satan; so, Father, be with us.
Hear, Father, the sorrowful appeal of this people, and resolve and lead, since the Father knows it, the han of all humankind, who, on a course of death throes, cannot grasp the path they are to go. We earnestly beseech and desire it.
We know that in raising us amid such a fortune there is the Father’s special Will, so we are a band who have set out to receive that Will in terms of heart, and, making that heart one, to set up a fitting Will before the Father, and, on the living side and the active side, to make a holy nesting place where the Father can rest; so grant that these may not grow weary midway, but go to the end.
Until the day when that Will, which will remain in the history of all things as love and joy, can be realized, guard us, Father, and counsel us—we earnestly beseech and desire. Grant that, tracing the heart of restoration so full of han that Thou hast left us, we may feel thanks upon thanks at each step of ours as we draw one step at a time nearer before Thee, and guard us through the remaining period—we earnestly beseech.
Father, who hast guarded this people and shed tears for these, we desire that hereafter too Thou wouldst be personally with us. Wherever we go, protect us personally and guard us.
Grant that, through the remaining one week, we may not become ones who lament by any chance, and grant that we may become figures who, strong and bold, pledge the morrow and can comfort the Father. We earnestly beseech and desire it.
Grant that all those gathered here today may live intoxicated with the Word and, enduring to the end and remaining, be led to become final victors before the Will, and grant that they may become true sons and daughters who can grasp through experience Thy heart of restoration and heart of creation.
As we earnestly entreat, we have spoken all these words, upholding the holy name of the Lord. Amen. The Final Victor Who Can Stand Before the Will
Grant that all those gathered here today may live intoxicated with the Word and, enduring to the end and remaining, be led to become final victors before the Will, and grant that they may become true sons and daughters who can grasp through experience Thy heart of restoration and heart of creation.
As we earnestly entreat, we have spoken all these words, upholding the holy name of the Lord. Amen. Spoken all these words, upholding the holy name of the Lord. Amen.
