Daegu Church
I hope that Unification Church members will not be deceived by the talk that attending their church will make them prosperous. All who say such things are people with the mindset of thieves.
Even for a single household that has collapsed and is rebuilding itself, it takes at least five years before any standard is established.
So how can anyone claim to revive a whole nation in a few months—and a nation as ruined as Korea at that, a wretched nation, a nation so far gone that it can scarcely be set right? It absolutely cannot be done.
The Salvation of the Nation and Its Duration
Even when a single family has fallen into ruin, it takes more than five years to set it right; how much more, then, would it take more than ten years to set right a nation that has collapsed?
Moreover, we hold an enormous ideal—that of saving the nation, saving the world, and saving the Cosmos. That being so, do you think three years would be enough for us to raise the household affairs of this fallen universe and to turn this world back into its original world?
If you think it can be done in three years, then you truly are people with the mindset of thieves. It absolutely cannot be done.
Then will seven years be enough?
Not even seven years will do. Even the almighty, all-knowing God, who has toiled and made countless sacrifices for six thousand years to set this right, has not yet been able to set it right; so how could we feeble human beings set it right in seven years and establish the original ideal standard? It cannot be done.
Then, setting God aside and looking only at the Republic of Korea: to make the Republic of Korea into a nation that yields to none of the world’s advanced nations, a nation that can stand at the forefront in every respect, would take at least forty years even if all thirty million of our people united. Think about it. How long does it take just to put up one large building? So it would take at least forty years.
On the way here by car today, I spoke about the pyramids of Egypt. You know the pyramids, don’t you? They are about a hundred and fifty meters high, and it is said that about two million enormous stones went into them—stones so great that dozens of men together could not move them. They say that about one hundred thousand people were mobilized to build one, and that these people labored for forty years to make a single pyramid. Then how long must it take to set the one nation called the Republic of Korea in its complete place—to establish it as a single sovereign nation that can shine forever in the annals of history and remain in history eternally? Do you think forty years would be enough? Only by working hard for more than forty years can it be done.
Then what kind of person can lead this nation?
It is a person who, facing thirty million people with a club in hand, says, “Endure your hardships. Even in the place of starvation, of poverty, of death, bear it and press on,” can make them all answer, “Yes.”
Only when such a leader appears can these people be saved. The Teacher knows this fact. Do you understand what I mean? Those who have sense will understand.
That is why the purpose of the Teacher, who leads the Unification Church, differs from the purpose of the people of the world. We have already begun our march toward that destination. And because the Teacher stands in the position of leading that march, the road is full of twists and trials. When the storm rages, the one at the head is struck first.
Every twist and every obstacle must be passed through and resolved by him. This is the principle. So it is an undeniable fact that the position of the Teacher, who leads, is harder than that of you who follow the Unification Church.
Then what is the purpose for which we have set out today?
The signboard reading “Unification Church” is not the issue. A day may come when that signboard is torn down overnight.
What we aim for is to establish, upon the three-thousand-li peninsula and before all the nations of the world, a single sovereign nation that can shed its light abroad, to make this people into a good people and a historic people, and to make the three-thousand-li land into a historic three-thousand-li land.
To achieve that, what must Unification Church members do?
They must stand at the head and take responsibility, and to achieve that, what must they do? As I said earlier, the one who stands at the head plays the role of the leader, and the leader must meet every obstacle first.
So you must be the first to meet all the hardships and storms of these people. Only then can you fulfill a leader’s mission before these people. This is the heavenly principle.
The Purpose for Which We Have Suffered
It is not the Teacher’s purpose to make you suffer.
What is the point of making you walk such a road of hardship?
Where lies the reason for making you kick off the comfortable nest and set out—at a time when others live at ease in comfortable places—to seek a road that is wretched, lonely, sorrowful, and lashed by storms?
It lies in this: that we walk the road of the pioneer, the road of the leader, so that the whole people may follow that example of courage and spirit and walk the same way. Someone must do it.
First one person, then two, then three—and in this way the whole thirty million must be led to go in that direction. Such a resolve must be held by everyone, from parents to little children.
We must bring it to the point where even a mother nursing her baby at her breast can forget her hardship and pray, looking toward the day of this people’s victory. We have set out bearing such an enormous mission.
We have come this far, having passed through a three-year period, but it does not end with these three years. Neither does the Teacher, who leads you, finish with three years. The Teacher intends to keep standing at the head and to run still farther.
If in the past he ran riding a bicycle, now he is resolved to stand at the head and run using the finest instruments of civilization. He is resolved that regardless of what enemy blocks his path, he will crush it and go on.
To restore the world into God’s bosom and to turn the evil world back into a good world, we must without fail pass through a history of struggle.
If you take hold of people and ask them, “What is your wish?” most of them will answer, “I was born into a poor household, so I wish I had a lot of money. I was born into a family with no power, so I wish I had power. I was born poor and could not study like others, so I wish I had been able to study.”
I am meeting you now for the first time in several months, and among you there may be some who wonder whether the Teacher has not carried in a load of something to eat. There may even be some who, being hungry, think they would rather be given bread than the Word. I apologize for such people, but the Teacher has not brought a bundle of bread. He did not come to give bread. Nor did he come to make you drowsy.
Then what did he come to give?
Just as the Teacher has a purpose in coming here, you too have a purpose in coming here. When these two purposes are joined, what must be done? There is a mission and a responsibility that absolutely must be carried out. Is that so, or not? Both the Teacher and you came here with a purpose. Do you understand?
Currently, several hundred people are gathered here around me, this one person, and you and I are engaged in a kind of struggle. When the Teacher steps into this place, he disregards you.
Even in such a place, the Teacher means to create an environment in which you can acknowledge, “He is right,” and so to lift you. Otherwise, he cannot lift you. Do you understand what I mean?
To make you better, something must be added to you, and how must it be added?
Only after pulling out all the roots and cutting off the branches can something new be added. To achieve that, the Teacher must disregard your character. The Teacher must make you into people who can be better than you are. That responsibility rests with the Teacher.
You may think, “This is the first time I am seeing the Teacher, so why does he speak so harshly the moment he arrives? Surely there is no end to the things he could say, yet he says only things that disregard our character.” But think quietly about it. Was what I said earlier a lie? It is indeed so. Therefore, I hope you will gather your wits and listen well for one hour. Either I pack my bundle and leave, or you bow your heads.
What People Have Pursued and What Is Now Needed
Now, let us go back and return to what I was saying earlier. I asked that young woman what she would like to become, didn’t I? These days, if you take hold of a young person and ask what they would like to do, some answer that they would like to become the richest person in Korea.
Next, some say that, if it were possible, they would like to be able to do as they please with Korea—that is, to become president, to hold the power of this nation in the grip of one hand, and lead the thirty million people. And next, what else do they want? To become an all-knowing, omnicompetent scholar whom no one in the world can match and whom all heaven and earth look up to. Most people make these three things their goal. Human desire is money, power, and learning. In sum, that is how it is. Is that so, or not?
Then, when we ask what is most necessary and urgent for saving this nation and these people, people say it is money. There must be an economic foundation, they say. Next, they say it is power. So they say, “Ah, we must seize sovereignty.”
Next, they say the level of culture must be raised; the cultural level of the people must be raised. These all have their reason.
But can a nation be saved forever with money? No. Can a nation be saved forever with power? No. Can a nation be saved forever with knowledge? That is not so either.
However lofty the learning may be, unless it can bind the hearts of countless people and become a cornerstone for forging the spirit of a people, that knowledge may be of help at some particular moment, may be of help in some one field in creating a world of culture. Still, it cannot become the eternal foundation of a new world.
What all humanity desires is money, power, and knowledge. What has been built with such things is the civilization of the twentieth century.
Then let us think about America today. America has an economic foundation that all nations envy; it rests upon a democracy that all nations admire, and it stands in the position of a civilized nation, an advanced nation that no nation can match. But is America truly in a position to save the democratic camp? It is not. And is it in a position to save the world? It is not.
It is the same with communism.
So, although democracy and communism are now shaping the ideological currents of the world, when we ask whether these two ideologies can once more set human history in order, gather the scattered conscience of humankind, equip it with a single worldview, and lay an unchanging foundation upon heaven and earth—they cannot. It cannot be done.
Currently, the Soviet Union is casting off the prestige of the international communist party and degenerating into a nationalistic communist party.
Then, at this time, what desire should young men and women who think rightly hold? Not money. No power. No knowledge. However much one bites and tears at such things, they are passing things. With such things, it cannot be done. What is needed? What is needed is a person who can put to shame those who have money; a person who can think, in the face of one who holds power and will not submit, “In this age you command me, but ten years, several decades from now, I will surely make you surrender.”
If there should appear a band of people who, though they possess neither knowledge nor power, can be said to possess the greatest and most historic truth—the supreme truth that cannot be exchanged even for heaven and earth—that band will without fail bring about a worldwide event.
Any force in the world can push out such people. No one can move them from the place where they stand. No one has the authority to do so.
If there is a person who can say with full confidence that, centered on a truth that stands in for all under heaven, he has grasped the source of the conscientious world that others do not know, and that he holds a fundamental truth able to embrace and bind together the conscientious life and circumstances of all—then surely all human beings throughout history will revere him.
The sages and wise men who have come and gone upon this earth will have to bow their heads before him, and all the people of this age will, before him, automatically set up the word “submission” and follow him without a word. So it will be.
Wealth, Power, and Knowledge Will Pass Away in the End
Then what road must we, Unification Church members, travel?
And what road must the Teacher who leads you travel?
If a human life is to be truly worthy of the name, what road must it take?
We must not become people who sell their character to gain material things, nor people who sell their knowledge to gain material things, nor people who, for the sake of power, sell their character or sell the truth they once held precious.
We must become people who can say: there is nothing that can buy or move my character or my knowledge; there is only one thing—the great Way of heaven and earth—and I move only according to the movement of the great Way of heaven and earth.
If there is such a person, that person can turn the wheel of history, which is rolling into the dominion of death, in a new direction, can set in order all the systems of this chaotic society, and can gather the traditions of society and lead them in one direction.
Then, against what standard did our ideal of unification set out at its start? It did not set out to be measured against the worldly desires that human beings crave. It set out having trodden these underfoot and risen above them. The Teacher does not envy the world’s possessors. He does not envy the person who sits in the seat of the millionaire and boasts of what he has, nor does he envy those who command with power. He does not envy those who boast that they have created a new culture with some worldwide ideology and knowledge.
You, too, must learn to disregard such things, to rise above them, and to reckon with the destiny of a history that is bound to be liquidated. Such things will surely pass away.
One cannot place upon them any lingering attachment, any longing, any sentiment, or any heart. This is an inevitable fact. Therefore, we must disregard such things and set out from above them.
Then what kind of knowledge is the knowledge we need?
Not visible, worldly knowledge. Not the knowledge needed to secure a place of ease centered on the flesh. And what kind of authority is the authority we seek? Not worldly authority. It is an authority whose conscience and character all created things can revere.
And what kind of material wealth is the wealth we desire?
It is wealth that remains just as it was made by God—pure, without ugliness, grounded in righteousness. Unless there arise people, or groups, or some ideology or thought that moves based on such things, this world will perish. It will be destroyed and will collapse.
What was the purpose for which the Teacher has fought, staking his life through forty years?
The Teacher did not desire money. What did he desire? He desired true people. What kind of true people? People who can cut away momentary desire with one stroke and rebuild with the right arm. He desired such people. That is why our Unification Church has walked a miserable road. Yet this Teacher who leads the Unification Church has not thought it miserable.
Even in the place where all the people gaze on, mock, curse, and revile, the Teacher has not despaired. He has not envied any worldly circumstance. For all of that is bound to pass away.
Even if the American people boast of their economic power before all the nations of the world, that too is not really theirs. It is not America’s. However much America may command the world centered on the sovereignty of democracy, that power is not America’s own.
Even if there are cultured people who can command heaven and earth and set heaven and earth in order, the foundation of that culture and knowledge is not that of people.
The economic power that can remain at the end of history, the power that can remain at the end of history, the knowledge that can remain at the end of history—that is, not the kind that is buried in history but the economic power that can endure long with history, the authority that can remain long with history, the knowledge that can remain long with history—these have an owner. That owner is God. So all of them are not human beings but God’s.
That is why people call upon God in their hearts. And they require of themselves a standard that resonates with Heaven. That is why the conscience ceaselessly refuses the direction in which the body is heading whenever it is not good and has accused it all along. It is because that road is the road that must be taken by people who long for Heaven and live centered on Heaven.
Therefore, the more money you have, the more you should wish to give it to others; the more power you have, the more you should wish to turn it over to all the people; and if you have come to know the source of a true knowledge that cannot be repaid even with all under heaven, you should wish to turn it over to all under heaven. This is the desire human beings should originally hold. But the world has not become so, and so it all collapses. This is an iron rule.
Righteousness Remains and Unrighteousness Falls
The words that Mr. Moon, the teacher of the Unification Church, speaks before you today are not Mr. Moon’s words. I know that there remains, solemnly, a heavenly order that has remained together with history that can set in order the present and lead history onward. That is why I am always thinking: how can I drive the band of unification onto the road of the heavenly order that can remain; how can I raise them into beings of character that can remain; how can I let them settle into a resting nest upon an eternal foundation; how can I leave them the supreme truth—the truth that conscience longs for and the world of heart longs for, the truth before which all people could become servants ten million times over and still be grateful?
Looking at it this way, where must we drive our Unification Church members?
We must drive them onto this road. Knowing this, the Teacher has set this task before himself and fought all along. As long as the blood in my body has not run dry and my nerves are not severed, what I see and what I feel are different from others’.
I do not know God and seek Him in the way that today’s world knows God and seeks Him. I do not desire the kind of place that they boast of as an environment of ease. I do not desire the seat of command with power either. I set out from a position whose direction is different and whose standard is different. And so there is conflict. But let us try, I say.
Righteousness remains; unrighteousness falls. The leaf on the branch that has life in it remains. But the leaf on the branch whose life has been severed falls.
The fortune of heaven and earth turns and turns forever and ever. This present time is a time of driving forward in the direction of creating a new history. But once one has only equipped one’s own character so that it can conform to that direction, then even if history passes away and all the culture, power, and economic power of the world disappear, the standard he longs for and seeks to establish will surely remain. This is the Principle, and it is the heavenly order.
What is to be done by gathering the band of the Unification Church?
It is to drive them onto such a road. The view of the economy and the standard of authority that heaven and earth desire are different from those of the world. The supreme standard of knowledge and the supreme standard of truth that heaven and earth seek to establish are also different from those of the world. We, too, must advance from such a position.
If we do so, there is nothing to envy. That is why I am leading you on. Then, in what place can true people be met? In this collapsing society, this collapsing current of thought, in the midst of this disintegrating chaos—can they be met in a place of merry-making? No.
Then what kind of person is a true person?
It is a person who looks at this world and weeps, who looks at this world and harbors indignation, who holds the conviction that this age must perish—and if it does not perish, then I will make it perish even with my hand—a person who keeps a heart grounded in righteousness. Such a person is a true person.
To meet such a person, in what place must one stand?
One must stand in the most wretched place on this earth. People who have money, people who have power, and people who have knowledge have, until now, tried to establish their position with what they possess. But do those people truly know the value of money?
Do they truly know the value of power?
Do they truly know the value of knowledge? They do not. Yet when one comes to stand in the opposite position, one can protect that value one hundred percent and guard it one hundred percent.
Does goodness come from the world? No. Then does it come toward me from in front? That is not so either. Goodness gathers and comes up from behind. That is why I tell you to do good deeds.
If, when the wheel of history turns, one fails to grasp its center—the fortune of Heaven—and find the direction in which to turn with it, then when it has turned past one hundred and eighty degrees, having no relation to that axis (the center), one will be flung off and destroy oneself.
The advanced nations have much money—but whose money is it? It is God’s. Whose power is it? It is God’s. Whose knowledge is it? It is God’s. Then who is God? He is the Father of all people. Therefore, Father’s character, economy, power, and truth all belong to all the people. That is why, in recent times, democracy has appeared.
In democracy, sovereignty belongs to the people—that is, to all the people. So it is said that the people must control sovereignty. Yet today, although it is said that sovereignty rests with the people, in reality, that sovereignty is held by the financial conglomerates. America is full now, but it is not set up to live well alone. It must be shared with all. Because the heavenly principle is so, America must give aid to foreign countries. Without doing so, it cannot survive. Everything America has is not America’s alone but the world’s. No learning belongs to the advanced nations alone. It belongs to the world.
Even When Giving, Give with a Parent’s Heart and with Tears
Now, what must America do?
It must release its own economic power, seek the poorest nation, and give with the heart of a parent. Otherwise, it will perish. It must be given with the heart of a parent, from the position of a servant, sincerely, while shedding tears.
Toward those who shed tears, one must give while standing in the position of one who sheds tears. And in giving, one must not give from the seat of power one has held until now. If one does, resistance arises.
Who must shed tears first?
It is not the one who receives who should shed tears first, but the one who gives who should shed tears first. That is the position of a parent. So the one who gives must give while shedding tears. That is how it is set up.
When a child is in a wretched and dreadful place, a parent sheds tears at the very thought of going to seek that child. If the great Way of heaven and earth is so, then to go in such a direction is the principle. The one who has is the elder brother, the keeper of the storehouse. So it must all be shared.
Then how must one give?
One must give with tears. To give while sneering is to perish. You must know this. America sometimes gives aid, but if it does so with power, it will perish. That is the principle. It is the same with the Republic of Korea. It must not say to America, “You boast that you gave us aid; well, let us see you receive a handout sometime.” In giving, one must give with tears. Unless one can become a person who gives with tears, the two are not brothers but enemies.
Money is the enemy, I say. Because the Teacher has realized this again and again, he is trying to make people who can well up with tears from the wish to give and who can give in earnest while shedding tears. Heaven is seeking such people. To be equipped with such character is more necessary than worldly money, more necessary than worldly power.
It is from such a place that Heaven turns the fortune of heaven and earth in astonishing ways. Therefore, unless a people becomes such a people, that people will before long be absorbed by another people.
When we think of this, we resolve to give even though we ourselves are unfortunate. And in giving, let us give with tears. If that is not enough, let us give with blood. Let us give with tears and sweat and blood.
If God exists, then among the human beings of the world, whom would He come to seek, and for whom would He plead?
If I were God, I would come to seek such a person. But when I look at the world now, some have, those who command with power, those who claim to know something; yet no one truly wishes to share with tears, to embrace with tears, to help with tears, to teach with tears. So this world must perish.
Then, where does the Unification Church mean to go?
Where does it mean to go? What is it that makes Heaven grieve, that makes history grieve, that makes the age grieve? It is not grief over having no money; it is not grief over having no people; it is not grief over having no power. It is not grief over culture being undeveloped or over having no knowledge.
It is grief that those who have money do not know how to truly share, that those who hold authority do not know how to truly protect, and that those who know do not truly teach. Therefore, we must know that the world is corrupt and is perishing.
Then what must we do to hold back such a world?
We must, beyond the ideal of democracy, hold the ideal of worldism, with the mind that says, If there is a people to whom America has not given, then I will be the first to give. And in giving, even if it be a single piece of bread, let us give it from a place where we pour out our whole heart and spirit until our very bones melt.
Then, when those people come to know the circumstances behind that one piece of bread, they will receive it and weep aloud.
When they come to know that one bearing such a heart came a thousand li, counting no distance too far, that one came to them on heartfelt steps transcending region and distance—then even if the bread one carried was lost along the way, even if one came to be exhausted and collapsed and wailing on the road, history will raise that one high, and that place will become the foundation of a traditional national character and a new ideal for later generations. You must know that this is the law of heaven and earth.
The One Who Gives Is Greater Than the One Who Receives
Until now, I have prayed, “Father, do not give me money.” If I were to make money, I could make it second to none. Money, too, is necessary, but a person who conquers money is more necessary.
We need a person who can make those who have money come and say, “Please, use this too in the same way.” Therefore, the members of the Unification family must become people who give. The one who gives is greater than the one who receives.
When the Teacher goes out on pastoral rounds to the provinces, he sees how wretched the lives of our family members are.
The Teacher knows that everywhere there are family members who cannot eat what they should eat, cannot wear what they should wear, and suffer. The Teacher has the largeness of heart to take hold of such family members and weep aloud.
The Teacher has a heart that can feel their circumstances until his very bones cry out. Yet what grieves me is that they are waiting for the world’s aid. Many people stop at such a livelihood-bound character.
One must wish to give. If one yearns and aches to give, then even if the women and the men do not respond, surely there will appear people who do respond—and who are they? They are the children. Children who grow up innocent, following the heavenly order, are bound to come seeking such people.
While leading you until now, I have not been able to feed you as others are fed, nor clothe you as others are clothed, nor lay you down in comfortable places as others are. It is all my responsibility. Yet there are circumstances in which, try as I might to take responsibility, I cannot.
My heart aches to take hold of each one of you, to comfort you, and to give you everything I have, but there are circumstances in which I cannot. It is because you must pass through a process of refinement and trial. You must realize that there remains a historic destiny requiring you to pass through such a process.
When Peter appeared before Jesus, who was about to walk the road to the cross, and said, “Lord, may it never be so,” Jesus said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan.” He treated him as an enemy. We must know that this was the final gift Jesus gave to Peter, who was anxious over him and his will.
Why did he do so?
Jesus was trying to make his disciples—even in a place like this today—into disciples who could remain through the ages, and he hoped they would become individuals of character whom, beyond the cross, all people could look up to; so was the one who told him here to fall, here to retreat, a disciple?
Jesus, who gazed upon history and gazed upon the future, forcibly restrained the trembling of his breast and the bursting of his nerves. And so, as he walked that final road, the words he opened his mouth to say to Peter were, “Get behind me, Satan.”
From the mouth of Jesus, who walked gazing toward the road of the cross—what kind of words are “Satan”? It was so as not to make Peter into one who would remain in that place.
Jesus hoped Peter would become a person who could work for Israel, for all the people of the world, for his descendants, and for the heavenly order; yet Peter stood in the position of blocking the road of his master who was going to give—so what was he but Satan?
Over all the eight directions of the three-thousand-li peninsula, our drops of sweat have soaked in, and our tears have soaked in. Upon the three-thousand-li peninsula, Heaven’s pent-up han (한) has piled up. Heaven longs for a person who can cry, “Ah, you mountains, and you waters, resolve our han for us.
Understand this heart that longs to give to all the people, and quickly let us give in a free environment—a ”person of character before whom all the people bow their heads, praising the sublimity of the price of his blood, praising the sublimity of his true intent, praising the sublimity of his heart, a person so awesome to receive from that all the people cannot lift their heads before him. Heaven longs for such a person.
When I think of this, my heart aches to make you stop your steps and say, “Hey, rest a while,” but I must press that heart down and whip you all the more. We must never forget that there are such circumstances in Heaven.
We must know that this is the present position of the Unification Church and the mission for which we must now resolve anew.
Even if we live in hunger, we must remember that there are people hungrier than ourselves among the thirty million people, and, short of dying, we must bite our tongues and pray and learn to plead their sorrow before Heaven.
We must not become those who, finding the going hard, collapse and despair, but those who seek the road of goodness to the very end.
The Wealth, Power, and Learning We Hold Belong to the Cosmos
You must know that there is a band of people who, walking the confused course of life that Satan has thrown into disarray, grow exhausted and collapse and despair, and you must pray for them.
You must know that such a responsibility rests with you. However great my hardship may be, if I do not go, ten million, twenty million will be sacrificed; you must become people who, anxious over this, shed tears for them and lament their hardship. If you become such people, you will not perish.
The road we must travel is truly the road we wish to travel, and the nation we must seek and build is a nation we wish to live in forever and ever. The wealth we must hold must be such that we can guarantee it to be the Cosmos’s and, at the same time, my own, this age’s and, at the same time, the past’s, and at the same time the future’s. And we must hold an authority and a knowledge such that, when we weep, heaven and earth can weep with us, and when we rejoice, heaven and earth can rejoice with us. This is the supreme desire and hope that fallen human beings today must seek in this present world.
Thinking of these things, all of you, consider the Providence of Restoration of God quietly. Because Unification Church members have learned the Principle, they know that God is pitiable. But do you truly know to what degree God is pitiable?
How pitiable is God?
When you opened your mouths and said “pitiable God,” those were words spoken within the limits of your minds and your spirits. You know God’s sorrow only as much as you yourselves have sorrowed. You know God only within your limits. How far have you ever stood in the position of comforting the sorrowing Father? Think about it. “Pitiable Father”—against what standard were those words set? This is not someone else’s affair.
The road of the Providence of Restoration is a road of grievance, a road of han, a pitiable road. Moreover, for the one who goes seeking goodness, it is a road of sacrifice.
To lead us onto such a road, how much labor must Heaven first have borne?
Now you must know this and form a direct relationship with God. And when you reckon up God, you must come to know how pitiable a God He is. The pitiable God—to what degree is that God’s pitifulness?
And how great was the sorrow of Jesus, who came upon this earth bearing God’s will to save all the people? He was a wronged Jesus, a pitiable Jesus.
Do you know how wronged and how pitiable he was?
The saints who followed Jesus also walked a pitiable road. So how pitiable it is! You must call this to mind.
You must go forward thinking not of the relationship between God and the Unification Church, but of the relationship between God and you yourselves.
When we look at the six thousand years of history, we can see that there was a two-thousand-year Age of the Providence to lay the Foundation for Restoration. Before the sorrow of having lost Adam had even faded, God set out to raise Noah and to raise Abraham to resolve the han of restoration—what indeed must those steps of God have been like?
Were they full of spirit and high in zeal?
In place of the shattered Adam and Eve, the Father steps in, seeking and raising Noah through a long history—what must they have been like? Did he wish to go? He did not wish to go; He was sick of it.
So how could He have met them in their first encounter?
He could not speak directly. That is why God called out through symbols and parables, hiding His body and veiling His face. Have you ever even imagined that He has done such work?
God set up Noah and watched over him for one hundred and twenty years.
Did He wait one hundred and twenty years because He was glad to?
It was because of the sorrowful turn of events that had arisen through Adam and Eve that they must not arise again. Through Adam’s error, a heart of han was left to descendants for thousands of generations; and if, before the pitiful steps that went forth to set this in order, Noah too were to leave behind han, then human beings would have no choice but to shoulder an even greater bundle of han.
Because human beings are full of the potential for betrayal and failure, He had to conduct His providence while watching and waiting.
In this way, He conducted the Providence of Restoration for two thousand years, from Abraham down to Jacob—so what must His heart have been like? It was through such an Age of the Providence of Restoration through indemnity that Jesus was set up.
When this Jesus came to walk the course of setting in order, on a worldwide scale, a history thrown into disarray, what must God’s heart have been like?
The Heart of God
God hoped that Jesus would fulfill his responsibility and resolve that han upon the earth. But Jesus could not fulfill his mission and was killed again. And so God had to advance once more toward a two-thousand-year Age of the Prolongation of Restoration through indemnity—so could His steps have been comfortable?
Why were our forebears sacrificed in Satan’s grip?
Although God indemnified for six thousand years to resolve the deep-seated han in His heart, He has not yet met the one day of complete indemnity; and so He sets up once more the word “Second Advent” and comes forth, looking toward the one day of complete indemnity.
When you think of such a heart of God, you must feel the sorrow of God, who watched Adam dying, and the sorrow of God, who watched the death of Jesus upon the cross.
When we behold that there remains a mission requiring the coming Lord to walk the road of the cross, to build an altar before all the people, to put on red garments like a sinner, and to offer a sacrifice of atonement before Heaven—the child who must walk that road is pitiful, but the heart of the Father who must drive the child onto such a road is pitiful too. The position of the Teacher who leads the Unification Church today and of you who follow is just like that.
Through the Principle, we have come to know the Father’s heart to a certain degree. Now you must know that there remains a worldwide road of Golgotha that you must walk.
The road of Golgotha remaining in Korea is not the issue. You must know that you are people who must walk beyond that road to the worldwide road of Golgotha, and beyond the worldwide road of Golgotha must march toward the cosmic road of Golgotha.
A great responsibility has been entrusted to you. It is hard for your bodies even to sustain it, even to bear it. Unless God is with you, you are people with nowhere to go and nothing to lean on. God’s heart wishes to indulge every individual circumstance a thousand, no, ten thousand times over.
When Jesus prayed three times in the Garden of Gethsemane, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me” (Matt. 26:39), how much must God have wished to grant it?
It is a father’s heart to wish to grant a child’s request even before the child prays it; yet the Father turned His face away.
And when Jesus, just before he breathed his last, cried out in a loud voice, in a voice steeped in han, “Abba, Father, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” — What must the heart of the Father who heard those words have been like?
We cannot know the heart of God. However sorrowful a life one has lived, however one may lament on a road of tribulation in which one’s very life is being trampled, it cannot be compared with God’s.
If God had been a human being, He would have annihilated humankind, burned even their bones entirely, and scattered even the ashes. And still His han would not have been resolved. Yet He has suppressed this heart of grievous circumstances and dealt with human beings until now.
Human beings have passed through paths of a thousand kinds and ten thousand differences, but God, looking toward the one day of restoration, has conducted His history of toil through the individual age, the family age, the clan age, the national age, the age of the state, and the worldwide age. You must not forget this.
You are Unification Church members. But are you truly the sons and daughters before the Father who has come bearing a historic relationship?
The Teacher, gazing toward Jerusalem and shedding tears, retracing the heart of Jesus who went to the Garden of Gethsemane and the Mount of Olives, and coming to know his sorrowful heart, was filled with han at himself for having failed to comfort so pitiable a Lord. He even thought about how he wished he had lived in that time, attending him.
Just as God, dreaming of that world of glory, gazed upon Adam and Eve and hoped they would quickly grow—have you ever thought how good it would be if you became one who could become the substantial object of the Father’s beauty, who, amid heaven and earth looking up and the whole universe praising, could be embraced in that Father’s bosom of love and be loved, and who could shed tears for joy at that Father’s bosom of love?
Indemnity Is Established in the Place of Suffering
The Teacher knows that the place where you now stand is far from where God has walked. Because it is impossible to go on until all this is filled in, what God set up as a law for forgiving ignorant human beings is indemnity. That is why conditions must be set up within one’s own generation to indemnify.
Then, in what place is the condition of indemnity set up?
It cannot be set up in a comfortable place. There is no such thing as an indemnity set up in a comfortable place.
That is the conclusion. In a comfortable place where one rejoices and laughs with a wide-open mouth, where one is drunk with satisfaction and dances—in such a place, the word “indemnity” does not exist. Then, in what place must it be set up? In a place where tears flow, where mucus flows, where sweat and blood flow.
The word “indemnity” can first be set up only in a sorrowful place where mind and body are tumbled over into one, where the mind is the body and the body is the mind, a place so steeped in anguish that it cannot be expressed even by wailing, cannot be expressed even by death.
Therefore, viewed in terms of livelihood, Unification Church members are pitiful. I dislike it when people come out to welcome the Teacher because the leader is coming.
Our Unification Church members are wretchedness itself and pitifulness itself. No explanation is needed. They are painful tears themselves. Jesus, who stood before Heaven, needs no explanation. The very sight of him is tears, the very sight of him is wailing, the very sight of him is grievance.
Yet even while in such a place, the Teacher eagerly awaits the appearance of a band that, in place of the thirty million people, vows from every corner of the three-thousand-li peninsula to render full loyalty and filial piety for the Father.
When you were not even in the womb, the Teacher made such a vow; when you did not so much as dream of walking this road, the Teacher had already walked it. If it comes to tears, the Teacher has as many tears as anyone among the thirty million people.
If someone were to appear before me and say but one word, an uncontrollable wailing would break out. Viewed in worldly terms, the Teacher is truly a pitiful person. How pitiful? He has nowhere to set his heart.
However vast heaven and earth may be, he has nowhere to set his heart. Jesus said that foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head; I understand that heart.
The Teacher hastens his steps toward the ideal of cosmic restoration, the restoration of the Cosmos. My heart is rushing, yet when I look at the band of the Unification Church set in present reality, some go along saying, “I do not care about the circumstances of individual restoration, I do not care about the circumstances of family restoration, I do not care what becomes of the people or the world,” and then, gazing at the distant mountains, fall into despair.
Is that the figure of the Unification Church members whom Heaven has been trying to raise on the foundation it has laid until now? You must awaken.
Just as Jesus said that foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head, I too have nowhere to set my head.
To what degree is that heart?
Whether at home or outdoors, the Teacher has nowhere to place himself. So when he kneels, nothing comes out but wailing. This is the walk that the present Unification Church members, who are said to be carrying out the mission of the age, must walk and the life they must live.
It is not for the Teacher’s sake. The Teacher and you have a common responsibility. Over what? It is not a common responsibility over glory, nor a common responsibility over the one day of victory for heaven and earth. The one day of victory poses no problem whenever it comes. It is precisely in setting up the condition of indemnity that there is a common responsibility. The condition of indemnity cannot be set up in a comfortable place.
Why are the thirty million people today floundering, and why are they unable to find their direction and caught in a chaotic environment?
It is because the number of indemnities is not yet complete. It is because the number of indemnities by which the sins committed by your forebears and the sins committed by the people of this age can be forgiven before Heaven is not yet full.
This was originally the responsibility that the established churchgoers should have shouldered, but they failed in that responsibility. So the one who has come to teach this and to urge on this mission is Mr. Moon, the teacher of the Unification Church.
Therefore, the members of the Unification family who follow me must suffer. Until when? They must suffer until these people become at ease.
Only by Becoming One Can Indemnity Be Fulfilled
God is hoping that these people will set up the individual condition of indemnity, set up the family, clan, national, state, and worldwide conditions of indemnity, and go on further to set up even the cosmic condition of indemnity.
God has given these people the responsibility of saving the world. Then, if these people have been given such a responsibility by God and possess the strength to fulfill that responsibility, what must they do?
They must hang their heart before God and shed tears. Thereby, they must lay the foundation of indemnity that can bring about the turning point of cosmic history.
Upon the cross, the heart of Jesus and the heart of the robber on the right were the same. Jesus did not treat as a robber that robber who recognized his pitiful self and comforted him in his suffering as a robber. He treated him as a friend with whom he could share his heart. Jesus treated that robber as though he were one with himself. That is why you can walk the road of salvation.
The one who, while still in the body, received the promise that he could enter Paradise before Peter and enter the Kingdom of Heaven before Peter — who was it?
It was the robber on the right. That is why the Teacher thinks the robber on the right was greater than Peter.
Then, from what position can the condition of indemnity be set up?
It can be set up from a place where one shares in sorrow, shares in joy, and meets hardship together. It cannot be set up from a position where one grieves and the other rejoices.
So the Teacher who leads you must not live a life cut off from you. If you have sorrow, that sorrow is the Teacher’s sorrow; if there is hardship in your life, that hardship is the Teacher’s hardship.
If you told the people of the world to go to such a hard environment, they would all rush at you and try to kill you. But it is from the place where one, rather, yearns with tears for the master who commanded one to go to such a place, and holds the mind that one must go however great the hardship — it is from this, where the two are bound in a heartfelt relationship made one, that the condition of indemnity is established as upon a foundation.
In the age of individual indemnity, we have fought to make my body and mind one; but in the age of family indemnity, husband and wife must strive so that his heart is my heart and my heart is his heart. So their hearts must commune. A family that cannot do so is a family that has already lost the qualification to set up the condition of indemnity.
Now is a transitional period in which the Unification Church must pass through the course of individual indemnity, the course of family indemnity, and the course of national indemnity, and advance onto the worldwide stage. At such a time, the Unification Church members scattered across Korea and the world must become one.
In this very moment of crossing over toward the worldwide stage of indemnity, when the Teacher in Korea sheds tears, the family members in America must also shed tears; when the Teacher in Korea goes hungry, they too must go hungry.
Otherwise, they must at least offer a prayer of repentance for not being able to go to such a place.
When the family members in Korea suffer, they too must suffer; when the family members in Korea grieve, they too must grieve. When the Unification Church members in Korea grieve, they too must grieve; and when the family members in Korea stand in the place of fighting for the nation, they too must stand in a place where they can fight with the same heart. Only then can the unified altar bear the burden of worldwide indemnity. Do you understand what I mean?
Because you do not know such things, it is the Teacher’s responsibility to pave this road. This three-year period is the period in which the Teacher carries out this responsibility. This three-year period is a period of discerning Satan.
The numbers three and four are numbers for discerning Satan. That the number seven was violated is the han of heaven and earth. Through the fall of the human ancestors, God lost His sons and daughters.
So the number three is the number of indemnity for seeking the sons and daughters, and the number four is the number of indemnity for seeking all things.
That is why this three-year period is a period in which the Teacher, staking his life, contends with the Satanic forces scattered throughout the world, with the countless evil spirits scattered throughout heaven and earth, and with the humanity of the world.
To pass from the course of individual indemnity through the course of family indemnity, one must, without fail, indemnify one’s individual historic relationships. Otherwise, the road to family indemnity will not open.
The Kingdom of Heaven is a place one enters having formed a family. It is a place one enters having equipped front and back, left and right, above and below. It is not set up so that the parents go to hell and the sons and daughters go to the Kingdom of Heaven.
The Kingdom of Heaven is the place that parents and sons and daughters enter together. The reason Jesus could not enter the Kingdom of Heaven and pray in Paradise is that he could not form a family. That is why the one day of the Second Advent at the Last Days is set up, and the marriage of the Lamb is held.
What is the marriage of the Lamb?
It is the feast for a true bridegroom and bride to meet and build a heavenly family. To enter the Kingdom of Heaven as one qualified by having formed a family in this way is the heavenly principle.
The Unification Church Has Laid the Foundation for World Restoration
The Teacher has personally won victory in the spiritual world. To do so, even while being swept by harsh winds upon this earth, he resolved tens of millions of times that he must not die. At every crisis where he met the enemy, how many times within his heart did he resolve, “I must not fall. I must not die.
If I die, who will establish this will?
However much I suffer, even if I become a cripple with my limbs cut off, lying down to live, I must not die.” In this way, he has walked the hard road until now.
The Teacher fears becoming famous while there is no foundation. He fears that his name might spread before the foundation is laid. Why? Because in such a case there is, by principle, an attack from Satan.
Therefore, the Teacher silently longed for the days to pass quickly, eagerly awaiting the day he would cross over the ridge of forty without dying. Knowing that the four-thousand-year history since Abraham established the standard of restoration must be crossed over at the Last Days by setting up the number forty, he counted the days, awaiting the swift crossing of the ridge of forty. “Youth, hurry and pass. Time, hurry, and pass.
Even if it means having all the treasures I possess stripped from me, at the ridge of forty that must come, I will not be a loser but a victor”—so saying, he has come this far. And this was the Teacher’s long-cherished wish. He has come thus far, struggling to set one body before the Cosmos and to fulfill his responsibility without dying—until he reached this ridge of forty….
You who have entered the Unification Church must wage a fierce battle. You must all be mobilized.
In walking such a road, the Teacher had not a single friend. There, not even God could be a friend. Having fought this overturning battle, staking his life, he held the Holy Wedding ceremony in 1960, and from then began the three-year period. That period is the period of restoring the children.
For a single center to be established, the three-dimensional relationships of above and below, front and back, and left and right must be completed.
So, having established the family foundation, I have walked the course of restoration for fully three years to carry out the historic indemnity.
The time for that to end has come; so what will happen from here on?
The fortune of indemnity that should have extended from the individual to the family, the nation, the world, and the Cosmos had failed to extend even from the individual, and Mr. Moon, the teacher of the Unification Church, took responsibility and made it extend.
In the end, that individual grace was made to cross over the family, cross over the clan, cross over the people, cross over the nation, and cross over even the world, and a road was paved by which it could circle back and come in.
Now, even if I die, I have no han. Even if I should die, the spiritual world will take charge of this will. Because in the past I fought Satan in the spiritual world and made Satan surrender, now it only remains for the human beings of this world to be restored.
In the fortune that extends outward, if the spiritual world cooperates, it is a loss; but in the fortune that comes back, if it cooperates, it is a gain. If it cooperates ten times, then all ten times become Heaven’s.
Now, having set up the standard of restoration to Canaan and laid a foundation upon which a reciprocal ideal can be established throughout heaven and earth, I have set up a representative spirit (代表靈) in each nation and opened the gate of that nation, so all the people of the world will perish unless they enter within the sphere of fortune of the Unification Church. Such a time has come.
When that happens, a time will come when, even without your witnessing, witnessing happens automatically. At that time, the moment we move, the family members increase.
Until now, Unification Church members have been very few. How we have longed for people! It is hard for the pastors and elders who believed well in the established churches to enter.
But the sons and daughters of the established-church pastors and elders who opposed the Unification Church and regarded the Teacher as an enemy will all become Unification Church members. And when those sons and daughters come to know the history of their parents’ opposition, they will dig up their parents’ graves.
A time will come when the earth groans. Even the earth rejects such corpses. A time will come when the living and the dead are judged. One is judged even after death.
You must walk the course of indemnity only after becoming completely one, having set up a reciprocal standard centered on the Teacher.
How much have you witnessed for the people over these three years?
Witnessing is not the issue. When I look, centered on the standard of having walked for the sake of heaven and earth, shedding tears and scattering sweat, I see that now, with the three-year period passed, the tangled history has been liquidated to a certain degree.
The Position of the Korean People
Then what now becomes of the Korean people?
At what age do the Korean people enter?
Looking at the history of the Providence of Restoration, from Noah through Abraham and onward, countless prophets and righteous forebears toiled to fashion the history of Israel; but because the people of Israel failed to complete their mission, today the Korean people have inherited that mission and crossed over with it.
Then, centered on the Unification Church, within what sphere does Korea stand?
If the Christianity of the whole world stands in the position of the Second Israel, then Korea stands in the position of a chosen heavenly people (天民) who can lead the Second Israel. That is why the time has come when even the non-believers of these people can receive the benefit of the Second Israel. Do you understand what I mean?
Because we have entered such a sphere of the age’s benefit, the principle is that only spirits with merit can return to this earth and cooperate with descendants—but Korea is an exception. Because the people of Korea on the earth today stand in the same position as the Second Israel, just as within such a sphere of benefit the ancestors of the Second Israel descend to this earth and cooperate, so for the Korean people the ancestors can descend and cooperate.
In Korea, a time has come when ancestors can directly cooperate with descendants who move for God’s will.
In the old days, Jesus and the Holy Spirit cooperated, but now good ancestors will cooperate with their descendants. At such a time, just watch what happens to those who do not go to the Unification Church. A time will come, I say, when the ancestors will drive them on, telling them to go to the Unification Church. It will be difficult for you, but I hope you will endure and bear it for just four years. The four years are a period of indemnity, so Unification Church members must suffer.
This time, we divided into a southern corps and a northern corps and held special revival meetings throughout the country, and in this presidential election as well, such a pattern appeared.
When will this nation settle into place?
Only after the ideal that Heaven seeks to establish has settled into place. Before then, it cannot settle. The heavenly principle is set up so. Before God settles into place, this nation, too, cannot settle into place. Because God’s will lies before this people, if the many religions that guide the spirit of this people cannot settle into place before God’s will, then this people too cannot settle into place. They will bite and tear at one another.
Once this year passes, there will not be so many lean harvests. On the contrary, there will be bountiful harvests.
Currently, both the teachers of the Unification Church and the family members of the Unification Church are suffering. When we suffer, God suffers too.
To set up the standard of national indemnity and crossover, what must we do?
Only when a reciprocal standard is formed between the hearts of the Unification Church members who suffer and the hearts of the thirty million people who suffer can the standard of national indemnity be set up and crossed over.
What was the purpose for which we have fought these three years?
It was to set up the standard of church-level indemnity. Because the established churches could not become one with the Teacher, we cut off the established churches, set up the Unification Church to take their place, and have fought.
Then why did it have to be so?
In Jesus’ day, the nation of Judea was a subject state of Rome. Centered on the nation of Israel, the people of Israel were the chosen people, and the spiritual source that moved that chosen people was Judaism. The situation in Korea today resembles that time.
In the Last Days, what corresponds to the Roman Empire is America. America is the stronghold of democracy. And the one that, though by a different name, stands in a position like a colony in economic and ideological terms is Korea.
The group that must now bear a responsibility like that of the people of Israel in this world is Christianity. The spirit of Christianity gave birth to today’s democracy. That is why, if one moves Christianity, one can move democracy as well.
History Reaps As It Has Sown
What aspect does the democratic world present today?
Just as in Jesus’ day, it is reproducing the aspect of the worldwide Last Days.
Therefore, viewed in world-historical terms, the present democratic world stands in the position of having to carry out the mission of Israel of that time, and present-day Christianity stands in the position of having to carry out the mission of Judaism of that time.
Then, with what mission did Jesus come?
He came with the mission of the Messiah. What was the purpose for which he came with the mission of the Messiah? It was to take the people of Israel into his hands and, using Judaism as a stepping-stone, to unify the whole world. That was Jesus’ mission.
And what became of that Jesus?
Where did the people of Israel go—the stage on which he was to stand, the foundation Heaven had prepared? They opposed him and fell away. Where did the Jewish religious body that God had so carefully nurtured for four thousand years go? It became the vanguard in selling out Jesus. Is that not so? Thus, Jesus lost all his stages of activity. Where did the people of Israel who had been raised go, and where did the Jewish religious body that had been raised go? Driven by them, Jesus vanished like the dew. He was a Jesus who, bearing the placard of “traitor to the nation,” walked to Golgotha like an orphan.
History reaps as it has sown. Therefore, the Lord who went to the cross must come again to the cross. It is because a historic crisis of tribulation has arisen. The scope alone is wider; the people and the environment are the same as that time.
If there is a leader who appears bearing a new ideal upon this earth and laying its foundation, then he must set the Christians of the whole world, who stand in the position of the Second Israel, in the position of the Jews and, using this as a foundation, unify the democratic world and complete one world. This is the mission of the Lord of the Second Advent. Because Jesus could not do it, he must come again and do it. Do you understand what I mean?
How did Jesus die?
He died driven out as a traitor to the nation and the ringleader of heresy. If the Unification Church has come forth bearing a new will to inherit history today and to set the generational succession (繼代) of history before the heavenly order, then what must the Unification Church do?
Even though driven by the people and driven by countless religious bodies, let us not end up in the same plight as Jesus, who bore the cross and walked the road of death. This is the gist of what the Teacher has led until now. Jesus was chased and died, but let us, Unification Church members, even when chased, not die.
It was the responsibility of the Jewish religious body to fulfill the way of a filial child attending the Parent before Heaven, and it was the mission of the people of Israel to set up the way of a loyal subject before Jesus, who came as the leader in Heaven’s stead. In other words, the Jews were to become filial sons and daughters before the coming Lord, and the people of Israel were to become loyal subjects.
But the history of God’s four thousand years of toil to make them filial sons and daughters vanished without a trace. God’s will, having toiled four thousand years to seek the chosen Israel and to set up Israel to leave behind the fidelity of loyal subjects, vanished without a trace. When the filial children and loyal subjects betrayed him, where was he to flee? There was nowhere. There was nothing but a place to die.
Do you think the enemy would leave him in peace to rest?
So there was no choice but to die. At that time, having lost the people and lost the religious body, with the loyal subjects gone and the filial sons and daughters all vanished, when the enemy set upon him and tried to kill him, he had no choice but to die on the cross. Christians believe in such a Jesus. In a pitiful Jesus, that is.
Today, viewed from a world-historical standpoint, the ideological currents of left and right are confronting each other curiously, centered on Korea. Think about Panmunjom (板門店). It is a truly curious term. There is only one such place in the world.
Have you ever thought about such things?
Those of you with sense, think about it a little. It is not there for no reason. Panmunjom came about not because of a problem of our people alone, but because of a worldwide current of thought.
There was a time when Khrushchev took off his shoe and made a fuss on the podium at the United Nations. That signifies that Satan rose to the highest seat. But from then on, it descends. From 1957, it descends. It is the same with Communist China. They are all keeping step with our history. So it is set up. It is because you know nothing that I tell you these things. If you knew, there would be no need for me to tell you such things.
To Become a True Disciple
Now, when the Teacher says it must be so, you must simply obey.
If you do not heed the Teacher’s word, you get struck. This is not a time to explain to you why it must be done. Yet I must explain until you say, “That is so. Of course it is—and that is killing me.
Do you know what time this is?
Now is the time when we must cross over into the age of national restoration. Do you understand what I mean? But even if you answer confidently, “Now I understand,” if Satan comes and commands you, you will be unable to budge.
Because you do not know well, when Satan comes and commands in a louder voice than the Teacher, you will go over to him. Understand?
There may be some who have come here for the first time today. To one who has come for the first time, it will seem strange that the moment the Teacher greets him, he speaks informally to everyone, old and young alike. It is because they are all the Teacher’s disciples that he does so.
The Teacher wishes to tell you the real thing and to teach you the real thing. Even after I have crushed your bones and broken your teeth, you must be able to go and sleep soundly, snoring at ease. The one who can put my mind at such ease is a true disciple.
If, over so much as a single finger, someone says something unpleasant, the people of the world walk out. But Unification Church members are different. They take it well even when scolded. Is that really so? In fact, when have I ever scolded? I have not, have I? So today, let us try scolding a little.
The band gathered here should all be given a good thrashing. They are in their twenties. The grandmothers will be leaving a little later. They will pack their bundles and go out the door. The household must be run by these young people. Still, the grandmothers and grandfathers should not feel hurt.
Did you not all run a household in your day?
It goes round and round. So there is nothing to feel hurt about. That is how it turns.
What the Teacher needs is young people. And when I look at your eyes, I can see that you are all lively rascals [살살이]. The average age of Unification Church members is twenty-three. It is probably not even that. It is truly maintaining the Principle. These are people who will not listen even when their parents beg them to please work hard.
It is because they were born with a heart of a different dimension. Their road, I say, is different from the road their mothers and fathers walk.
When the Teacher speaks like this, you will probably think, “Ah, so going this way must be the principle.” Although the Teacher spoke as if praising you with pleasure, you must not take it as a matter of course. It is because the road you are walking is important and urgent that it is so, but once the road has been paved, you must again form a bond with your parents.
After you have survived the satanic world, you must cast a rope and save your parents. You must not cut that rope off entirely. You know that, don’t you?
Since I must speak to young people, the Teacher must become young. Properly, since this is the first time I have come to Daegu, I ought to greet you with dignity even in a single word: “Family members of Daegu, how much trouble you took to come from far away. I hear some of you even came on foot—what hardship! It is nearly four o’clock now; have you eaten lunch?” But that sort of thing does not suit the Teacher’s temperament. My mind wants to say three things at once.
So I am busy. You cannot imagine how busy the Teacher is. The Teacher is here today, but when morning comes, he may have to leave again at once.
To you older people who have come here for the first time today: even though the Teacher stands in a position of leading many people, please do not regard him as such a Teacher, but think that, since he is about the age of your sons, he will be your friend, and do not take it amiss even if he speaks informally. Understand?
Since there is no reply, it seems there are no older people present. Then good.
When one bears the responsibility of leading many people, one must become a friend to anyone, so one even speaks informally to older people.
And do not doze off. Will you promise not to doze? If you do not promise, I will not speak.
The Teacher Has Laid the Foundation to Unify the World
Korea is the cutting-edge region where the cultures of East and West intermingle, the region where ideologies make contact, the starting point from which a new ideal world can be created.
The age that cries out for reconstruction has passed, and a new age has come in which Unification believers cry out for founding anew. But the word “founding anew” cannot be set up without an offering. Is that so, or not?
Let the one who lectures on the Principle answer. To set up the word “founding anew,” is it possible without an offering, or impossible? It is impossible, isn’t it? That is why, having no choice, I drive you on without mercy.
Reconstruction means gathering again what already exists; founding anew means bringing into being what did not exist. To achieve that, my hand must be the motive force and my flesh and bones the driving power. Otherwise, one cannot create existence out of nothing.
Then, will it do for us members of the Unification family, who bear the mission of founding anew, to sit and merely shout, “Founding anew! Holy! Hallelujah! Amen!”? It will not. We must shed blood and sweat and tears. There is no other way. Yet even so, we must not die. Even while shedding tears and blood and sweat, we must take hold of the land and move, take hold of the people and move, take hold of the world and move.
Then what of the Teacher, who leads the members of the Unification family bearing such a mission?
He has not been able to sit in a comfortable place for a single day. There has not been a single comfortable day. It is so even now. The moment I close my eyes, many thoughts arise. That is why I try not to sleep. As far as possible, I try to work and then sleep for just a moment. It is because the Teacher has lived a disciplined life of spiritual concentration, the life of the Way, that he lives so. If one only sits and thinks, all is lost.
In truth, the Teacher is more pitiable than you. That does not mean I am asking you to look at the Teacher as pitiful. You are now in your twenties, are you not? When the Teacher was in his twenties, he was very pitiful indeed.
Just as there was the Age of the Providence to lay the Foundation for the restoration of Heaven to find the road of restoration, the Teacher had a preparatory period to lay the foundation of the Unification Church. To achieve that, what must one do? One must match the cosmic measure of heaven and earth and lay a foothold upon the earth based on Heaven’s principle. Is that not so?
Likewise, you must know that in the Teacher’s life course too there was an age for paving such a road—that is, an age of preparation for the Unification Church. What happened in that age, no one knows well.
The people of this world will never know. This is known only to God and the Teacher. Do you know how the Teacher lived? Think for a moment about what agonies the Teacher went through to find this road and what battles he fought with the spiritual world.
Before unifying the spiritual world, the unification of the earth is impossible. Then do you know how he entered the boundless, vast spiritual world, cut away all the hat-cords of those beings and received their surrender, and came forth holding this ideal of unification? Unless the spiritual world is unified, the unification of the earth is absolutely impossible.
All of you, go and ask the people who communicate with the spirit world, or the monks who sit with their legs crossed, beating a wooden gong and cultivating the Way, who I am. They will testify at once. Do you know such things? It is set up so that they testify.
The spirits in the spiritual world all recognize Mr. Moon, the teacher of the Unification Church. But the people of this world do not. When I look into your eyes, you are all absent-minded.
Even so, in the place of death, do you have hope?
When you go to the spiritual world, there are many people who recognize the Teacher. Can you believe that? “What a fraud. He does not even know whether the spiritual world exists, yet he says some people recognize him! What a phony fellow…!” Is that what you say? But it is fine if what was called “a fraud (엉터리)” turns out to be “the genuine thing (진터리).” The countless spirits of the spiritual world are all listening to the Teacher’s words. No one can snatch this away. In that I have confidence.
One must go before God and receive the seal of righteousness (義印). One must go before God, receive the seal of righteousness, and come back, I say. Without coming forth holding the authority of victory, can one unify world Christianity?
Anyone can attach the word “unification.” But when it comes to whether one can truly do such a thing, that is not so.
If you cannot believe it, then resolve to die and fast for forty days, I say. Stake your life and pray, “God, it is rumored that Mr. Moon, the teacher of the Unification Church, is a heretic—is that really so?”
The Unification Church, Opposed Yet Victorious
This road is a road you cannot walk even if all the forebears who, through six thousand years of generational succession, brought you into being were resurrected all at once and offered up as sacrifices. It is a road that grows harder the farther one goes. There are no telling how many millions of pits in which God suffered for six thousand years and in which Jesus and the Holy Spirit were caught and could not free themselves.
Then how did the Teacher cross over such pits?
The Teacher has a secret art. He knows the secret. He has had it from the time he was born. At a glance, he knows. I mean, he knows right from wrong. He knows whether one must stand at the back or stand at the front. That is why, even while fighting that battle until now, he has not become a loser.
The Teacher won victory in the spiritual world. Who could do this? The countless seekers of the Way scattered throughout the world must, in the future, come to the Teacher and learn. It will surely be so. That is why, even if thirty million people oppose and the three billion people of humanity oppose, there is no problem. The hundreds of billions of spirits in the spiritual world all heed the Teacher’s words, I say. But he does not force.
In teaching the children, he does not use the secret art he used when making the enemy surrender. If the Teacher used such secret art as he used in the old days, not one person could enter and sit here. When the Teacher prays, he can see that all sorts of people are gathered here. A ragtag bunch is all gathered here. In the old days, he sometimes used such secret arts, but now he does not. In educating the children, one must not use secret arts. One must educate from a normal position. Is that not so? The Teacher, who even outwitted Satan, would he not know such secret arts?
You do not qualify for whatever. It is only because you were born in Korea that you can all sit here. Why was the Teacher born in Korea? Was he born to meet you?
Once one has won victory in the spiritual world and built a foothold there, then the next one must win victory on the earth.
Do you know how much the Teacher has won?
The Teacher’s first plan has been victoriously completed. Staking everything on six thousand years of history, the first mission the Teacher had to carry out in his lifetime has been victoriously completed in this three-year period.
What is that? Going back to what I said a moment ago—the only place in the world where there is a Panmunjom is Korea. It is the place where all the historic fortunes meet, the place that becomes the focal point. That is why everything is set up to revolve around Korea. To revolve without a center is to be shattered. Heaven set up Korea as the center. That is why one must take hold of that center and revolve. The more one turns it, the more only what can harmonize with the center remains, and everything else is flung off.
Throughout his life, the Teacher has confronted, within Korea, the Liberal Party, the Democratic Party, and the Republican Party; and worldwide, he is struggling against Japanese imperialism, communism, and democracy. From them, he has suffered unspeakable persecution.
And so, within the Teacher’s lifetime, he has built the foundations of individual indemnity restoration, family indemnity restoration, clan indemnity restoration, and national indemnity restoration.
Furthermore, only when the foundation of state-level indemnity restoration is built does the worldwide fortune turn and come in toward Korea.
Look quietly at Korea’s position today. Korea is in the position of the people of Israel. The established churches are placed in the position of Judaism, centered on the people of Israel. If there is a group here that has come forth bearing a new truth, it is bound to be driven out.
Jesus, who came forth with Rome, the people of Israel, and Judaism as his background, was driven out. In the end, he received their opposition and died. But we have laid a foundation that will not die even though thirty million people oppose and the established churches oppose it. We have come thus far, laying the foundation and maintaining the program of the Principle.
If Jesus had been able to use Judaism as a stepping stone, he would not have perished. He would not have died. Our Unification Church receives the opposition of the established churches, which stand in a position like Judaism.
Yet even within such circumstances, just as Jesus’ disciples gathered, you are now gathered in this pitiful place. You are all Gentiles. There are only a few who entered after having believed in Jesus. You are all Gentiles.
Did Peter, who was Jesus’ disciple, believe in Judaism?
Did you know that?
He was a fisherman of the lowest status even among the people of Israel.
What Judaism would such a man have believed in?
Gathering such people and trying to set up the gospel of the New Testament to confront Judaism and fulfill his responsibility, Jesus died. But the Unification Church today, though doing such a work, has not perished and has laid a foundation by which it can guide the established churches. Understand?
Humanity, the Sinners Who Killed Their Parent
Then, in what position is the Unification Church?
It has been restored to the position of Judaism, which received the blessing of being the Third Israel and could inherit the way of loyalty and filial piety. That is why the certificate of registration came out the other day. It has been registered in America, which is like the Roman Empire, and registered in Korea, which is like the nation of Judea. Having thus laid a worldwide stage centered on religion, from now on, no one can expel us, and we cannot be killed however much one tries.
Judaism had the mission to take charge of the ideological aspect of the people of Israel and to teach the direction in which to go toward a new heaven and earth. But in Korea today, the established churches, which stand in a position like Judaism, are failing to teach the Korean people the direction by which they can go to the land of Canaan.
Now our Unification Church must bear the responsibility of teaching that direction. And the time when one had to carry out only a denominational mission has passed. Now we are entering the age in which we must carry out a national mission.
Then why is there a blessing for those who, within three years, knew Heaven and were loyal? It is because the three-year period is a period in which one can receive the benefit of being recognized as a filial son or daughter and a period in which one can inherit the content of the Blessing.
So if one is loyal during the three-year period, the condition of being recognized as a son or daughter of Heaven remains.
It is the mission of the Unification Church to set up, without yielding within the satanic world, the way of keeping one’s fidelity, of being loyal toward Heaven, and of rendering filial devotion toward the Parent. It is not set up in a place of singing and dancing. It must be set up on the road of the cross. Because Jesus went to the cross, he comes again to the cross. Understand?
Jesus turned his back on his hometown, turned his back on his parents, turned his back on his brothers, and went to Golgotha. So we, too, must walk the same road.
Then what kind of people are not only the members of the Unification family today, but also the three billion of humanity and the forebears who have come and gone until now? They are sinners.
What sin did they commit?
The sin of murder and robbery. Not murderers and robbers who killed a stepchild or a servant. They are murderous robbers who committed the greatest sin of all, the one sin that cannot be forgiven—they killed the Father.
Think, all of you, how great a sin it is. Did you kill the Father, or did you not? Since you have learned the Principle, you will know that you are sinners who killed the Father.
What kind of people are these?
Jesus, whom God sent as the ancestor of humankind, was our Father. Yet they seized and killed that Father. They are such sinners. What is the point of putting something into such a mouth to eat and pampering such a body?
What good is it to become the foremost in this world where only such sinners live?
However dreadful a word one uses, it cannot be called dreadful enough. Judged by the price of the sin they have committed, they are villains so wicked that it would not be enough to tear open their bellies and kill them and make them all at once the food of eagles and wipe them out. Those who wish to leave, leave. Those who do not wish to hear such talk and wish to leave, leave, I say.
Having learned the Principle, we see that we are children who killed the True Father. Is that not so? We are sinners who killed the Parent. A murderous robber is nothing. We are sinners worse than that—sinners who killed the Parent, I say.
Such sinners, yet you would build a house and live at ease?
In the period of Japanese rule, though he had committed no crime, the Teacher endured much imprisonment. In those days, even in the dog days heat of midsummer, he was made to kneel.
If he slept even a little, they jabbed him with a bamboo spike and doused him with cold water. Yet this was nothing.
If one were to govern Unification Church members on principle, one could govern them so and not run afoul of Heaven’s law. It does not run afoul of the Principle. It can all be vindicated. I have the confidence not to be caught by the condition.
The Teacher received such training. “Even if this body is torn to shreds and beaten again and again until it vanishes as the atoning sacrifice for all the people, I have no ‘han’—holding such a thought, the Teacher has lived his life until now.
The Way to Be Forgiven and Saved
When you are cold, you try to put on another layer, don’t you?
You must feel that you are sinners who deserve to freeze to death in the bitter north wind and snow and to be struck dead by lightning.
We are people who must feel that we are such sinners. Not knowing even this, you bear children and carry them about? In the old days, even for killing the king of one nation, eight degrees of kin were wiped out, and nine degrees of kin were wiped out.
So we are naturally bound to receive punishment. You stand in such a position. You must feel that you yourselves are sinners who killed the Father. From such a place, you must repent.
To save these children who deserve to die, Heaven sent a special envoy. Therefore, merely to hear the word “salvation” or the word “pardon,” we have no han even if we die. Even if we only hear it and die, we have no han.
Does the dead Father come again?
Does he come back to life and come again? Are you telling him to come again? The pastors of the established churches say, “Oh, Lord, come quickly.” When he comes, what will they do then? Do they say, “Oh, Lord!” even knowing such circumstances? That does not mean I am reviling the pastors individually. You will understand the Teacher’s words. It is so when seen from the heart of the Father, I say.
And yet, the steps of God, who comes to seek and forgive and save such people, the circumstances of the Parent who stands in the position of having to come and seek them again—how pitiable they are!
You are sinners who killed the Parent. Therefore, to have that sin forgiven and to be saved, you must come to think that, if such blood flows in me, I ought to tear it open with a knife and draw out all that blood. You must feel that it is loathsome. You must suffer and suffer. The thought must come first that, if you were to cut off even one leg and become a cripple and go before God bearing that flaw, you might at least be able to save face.
This road is the road of being saved, and this road is the road of seeking God. Yet when you look at how established churchgoers pray, they say, “Oh, Lord! Even if all other households’ sons and daughters die, let our household’s sons and daughters not die. Even if the world perishes, let our nation prosper.” Their words flow like a clear stream. Just as a rice cake greased with oil slips out smoothly, their prayers come pouring out.
What road must our Unification Church walk?
We must walk the road to resolve the han of the sin of killing the Parent. Because the Parent died walking the road of the cross, to resolve that, we too must walk the road of the cross. Otherwise, there is no way to resolve the han. Do you understand what I mean?
When, after killing him, one comes to realize that he was the Parent, then even if one digs up that grave, takes hold of the corpse, and weeps and weeps, there is no resolving the han; even if one spends one’s whole life hung upside down on the rack of the cross, one cannot resolve the han of the sin one has committed. We must go to the grave of the Parent. Therefore, before the human beings of the Last Days, there remains a worldwide road of Golgotha. You must know this fact. We, Unification Church members, mean to spend such a life.
In what position did Jesus, who came in the position of the Parent, die?
Bearing the heart of a parent and wearing the body of a servant, he died. And Jesus, having the yoke of a sinner placed on him to forgive the very children who had killed the Parent, gave his tears and blood and sweat and all that he had and walked the road of the cross. Thus, he laid the ground for forgiving the children.
The road the believers of the Unification Church walk is the road of following the road of Golgotha that Jesus, the Parent, walked. Jesus, bearing the heart of a parent and standing in the position of a sinner, shed blood and sweat and tears on the thorny road of Golgotha and went, having piled up a foundation of repentance.
Originally, there was no such law of forgiveness. Even in the heavenly way, no law forgives the sin of killing the Parent. Jesus, upon the cross, saying, “Abba, Father, forgive them,” exchanged his death and opened the gate of such a way. That is why humankind has been able to walk the road of salvation.
What must the people of the Unification Church live with as the goal of their life of faith?
They must live with the goal of bearing the heart of a parent, wearing the body of a servant, and walking the road of the cross. Even “the body of a servant” is too generous a word. It is “the body of the murderer who killed the Father.” Therefore, we must walk the road to indemnify this.
Jesus walked that road though he was without sin; how much more must we, who are sinners that killed the Father, walk this road a hundred times, a thousand times. Otherwise, we perish.
The Four-Year Course for Completing the Denominational and National Mission
Because the Father walked the road of the grave to bring me, who was dead, back to life, we must walk it bearing the heart of a parent and shedding tears and blood and sweat. This road is a road of destiny for the descendants of the Fall.
For whose sake did Jesus, coming to this earth, shed tears and blood and sweat?
The tears were for humankind, the blood for Heaven, the sweat for the earth. He prepared all at once a substantial standard of heart, staking the past and the present. To carry out the indemnity of the heart, in place of humanity, which stood in the position of unfilial children, he set up a standard of forgiveness and departed.
That is why even we today, like ringleaders of murder, can be forgiven by believing in Jesus. This is the truth of Christianity. The marrow of the Christian doctrine that the Teacher knows is this.
Today’s believers must recognize their sin and repent. They must recognize and repent that Jesus, who came to save the universe, was my Father, the only one in heaven and on earth, and that I killed that Father. Those who do are not fit to be saved.
Have you ever repented?
Those who have not even repented must suffer terribly. That is the conclusion. Do you have grounds to protest, “Teacher, why do you say such things?” You are all caught, without exception. The heavenly principle is so.
Therefore, we walk the road of restoration. Whom must we follow as our model? We must follow the example of Jesus, the Father. Understand? So during these three years, let us, from the position of sons, suffer together with the Teacher. In Jesus’ day, they were divided by betrayal, but let us stand in the same position and cross over this crisis together.
Jesus was sold by the Jews — that is, by the priests of Israel — and walked the road of the cross; but let us go to Golgotha embracing the people, embracing the world.
Let us go without dying. Let us go without dying to Golgotha and then come back down again.
Just as the resurrection of Jesus opened the gate of the worldwide gospel, when the Unification Church, without dying, crosses over the people, goes to the Rome of the present age, returns, and makes a new start, then the worldwide foundation will be laid in earnest. That is the conclusion that comes out. Understand?
From now on, for four years, we must complete the denominational mission and complete the national mission.
If you wanted to be at ease, why did you come here? You should have stayed home. Originally, when the Teacher came to this earth to carry out his mission, he meant to complete everything in seven years. In seven years.
At that time, if I had become one with the established churches and joined hands with Dr. Rhee, communism would already have vanished entirely. The Teacher would have wiped it all out.
Originally, I meant to strike down the enemies, ride upon the enemies’ backs, and bring blessing to Korea. I meant to have servants carry the blessing in, but the masters, these Korean people, blocked it. I came to Korea bearing the blessing, but there was no one to receive that blessing.
So through the Korean War, the Korean people became wretched, and Japan, our enemy, prospered. That is how it turned out.
If Korea had accepted the ideal of the Unification Church, the fighting would all have ended on the plains of Manchuria. And the blessing would all have come to Korea.
Because what was to be done in seven years could not be done, it was extended to twenty-one years. You must know that these four years now are the last to come to an end. Do you know this? You blockheads. Why are four years needed?
Why must one go?
If you do not wish to go, then quit. What is so far about twenty-one years? Even if it were two hundred and ten years, one must go. Not to go will not do. Even if you do not go, the Teacher goes.
From now on, the Teacher is a nationalist. The Teacher is not a Teacher who is only for you. The Teacher may soon go to America. Even now, the American family members are clamoring for the Teacher to come. The Japanese family members, too, say, “Teacher, please come even briefly next month.” Such a time has come.
The American family members have been asking for three years, and the passport has come out, so I need only go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and report. Yet the reason I have postponed it until now is for the sake of pitying you. It was for the sake of pitiful Korea.
The Time to Resolve Anew for the Restoration of the Nation
Looking at the Korean government, the Liberal Party government is the Adam type, and the Democratic Party government is the Eve type. That is why Madam Park Sooncheon of the Democratic Party spoke out so loudly. When you know such things, it is fascinating.
Do you know why, when Dr. Rhee was elected, the two candidates fell?
The Teacher has thought about it more than anyone. A time will come when I explain such things in detail. This time, the Republican Party government is the archangel type. Because Adam and Eve failed to become one, the Republican Party government, in the position of the archangel, has come forth. Then what will happen from now on? The Teacher is now thinking much about this.
Now I tell you to tighten your belts for four years, just as the Teacher directs. A time when ideological armament is needed is bound to come. It cannot but be so.
Because communism is watching this nation from close by, we must urgently arm ourselves ideologically, arm ourselves with thought. At such a time, we must quickly create an environment in which the whole of society can publicly acknowledge Unification Church members.
The basic unit of the nation is the family. So I tell the Blessed Families to go out and die at this time. This time, because there was no time, it could not be done, but originally I meant to make a full circuit. I meant to seek the Blessed Families who had been quietly idle all this while and make them work. I tell you to suffer. I tell you to walk the individual course of offering. And I tell you to walk the family course of offering as well.
Today, you must set up the standard of family restoration. Only by restoring the family can your parents be saved. If you are driven out to toil, they will shed tears. In that way, you must bring them to the Unification Church.
Now, the family standard is important for the Unification Church, but it must also set up the clan standard and the national standard.
So, centered on the Unification Church, we must cross over the ridge of the Fall. Therefore, we must resolve anew. Do you understand how precious our responsibility and mission are?
Now we must witness with all our strength. We must give our all for the restoration of Canaan. God did not have a single people of His own. God had no people, no land on which He could be present, no sovereignty over which He could rule. This land is not God’s land now.
Do not, because I say this, think that Mr. Moon is trying to become president in Korea. I am trying to bring about the remaking of human beings. For the Teacher, bringing the inner person to life is the primary work. Bringing the outer person to life is the secondary work.
Unification Church members represent the inner person, and the people of the world represent the outer person. These two must become one. Yet now they have not become one but have become enemies. To make what stands in the position of enemies become one, I teach you: do this, do that, follow me, you will perish unless you do so. Just for three years, do as I tell you, I say. If you do so and then perish, plunge a knife into the Teacher’s neck, I say.
The Teacher is trying to lay the foundation of a second victory and lay the foundation of a third victory. Then the worldwide foundation is laid automatically. With that, laying a foothold throughout the whole world, I mean to carry out a movement of world restoration. Can you do it, all of you? Can you truly do it?
Once the foundation of worldwide victory is laid, the Teacher intends to entrust everything to you and step back. All sorts of rumors have spread about Mr. Moon, the teacher of the Unification Church — this and that, have they not? But now, if the Teacher were to put up a signboard and hold a revival meeting in a place like the sand flats of Daegu, all sorts of people would flock to it.
It has come that far, I say. The time has already passed. Knowing this, will you tighten your belts and follow behind the Teacher again?
Once these four years pass, I may no longer command you to witness. I may tell you to do it if you wish, and not do it if you do not. I will not interfere, I say.
Three Children of Faith to Establish the Family Foundation
In the future, when all the people of the world come to know this Principle, they will all say they want to come to Korea and work. And in the future, all Korean people will want to attend the Unification Church. At that time, there will be no need for the Unification Church to witness.
We need only choose them all as sons and daughters of faith. Understand? In just a little while, one will not be able to witness even if one tries. The territory is small, yet a time will come when everyone fights to go first. Just watch whether it is so or not. The Teacher is not lying to make you work. He is absolutely not such a Teacher.
If you do not witness, foreigners will come to witness for all they are worth. They may come and offer to buy even a single straw mat that you slept under, for tens of millions of won. The Teacher drives you on because he loves you. This time too, I intend to assign everyone to fixed posts. The district leaders wish I would not, but the more they wish so, the more I will extend it.
The Teacher is thinking such thoughts. Those who fail in their responsibility will all be replaced. It is set up to be so. In the future, the countless clans—the Kim clan of Gimhae, the Park clan of Miryang, and so on—there are many, aren’t there? In our country, there are countless clans, and they will all say they want to go out witnessing, but in the future, there will be no land left to go out witnessing in. Even if one wishes to go out witnessing, there will be no land to go to. Then they will want to dig a tunnel through the Pacific, even making a tunnel all the way to American soil, to get into America. Later, when there is no work, they will even do that. But before that, for seven years, they must suffer. This is the formula.
In the Last Days, there will be a seven-year Great Tribulation; and if it cannot become a seven-year Great Tribulation in which one can be loyal to the Parent of Heaven, but becomes a seven-year Great Tribulation in which one is loyal toward the earth, how grievous that would be! Do you understand what I mean? That is why, in the future, do you know where the pastors and elders—those who have become enemies of Heaven—will go during the seven-year Great Tribulation? Even when told not to, they will of their own accord shed sweat and try to undergo sickening hardship.
Every person upon this earth has a seven-year Great Tribulation. One must cross over the individual seven-year Great Tribulation, the family seven-year Great Tribulation, the national seven-year Great Tribulation, the worldwide seven-year Great Tribulation, and the cosmic seven-year Great Tribulation.
The Teacher has been carrying out the work that can indemnify the whole. You must cross over the individual seven-year Great Tribulation. That is unavoidable.
To cross over this, you must witness to at least three people. The first family was not Noah’s family but Adam’s family. And to find the family again, there must be three sons and daughters. So I tell you to witness to at least three.
Originally, one must witness twelve suns. Only then can one stand in the position of having restored Noah’s family. So you must at least seek and set up three sons. There remain twelve sons, seventy disciples, and one hundred twenty disciples to be restored, and the Teacher has carried out the work of restoring these through indemnity over three years.
Do you think you have given the Blessing by fully carrying out your responsibility?
Believe in the Unification faith if you will, and do not if you will not. It makes no difference. The person is not the issue. The position is the issue.
Taking the government of the Republic of Korea as an example, the position is what matters. Such-and-such a minister is not the issue. If one fails in one’s responsibility, one can all be pushed aside. A thousand people, ten thousand people can be replaced.
That is why, when the Blessing is given, the very first thing asked is whether you will take responsibility if you make a mistake. That is why it is a conditional Blessing.
Why a conditional Blessing?
Because if you were told to have dominion over all things, Satan would still accuse. The Blessing is not given to such people. The Blessing is given to those who have made Satan surrender. That is the principle. But because you have not advanced even to that standard, there is no choice but to give a conditional Blessing. Therefore, you must receive the Blessing once more in the future.
Become a Substantial Being Who Takes Responsibility for Gyeongsang Province and for the Nation
That is what I mean to put you through hard discipline. Is it all right to put you through it? How should I do it? Shall I do it by force? Is that all right too?
The Teacher does not, by nature, use dictatorship, but toward Satan, he uses absolute dictatorship. Toward the children, however, he does not use dictatorship. If he uses dictatorship toward children, it is only when Satan is clinging to them. What is democracy? There is no need to talk about that.
There are all young people here, aren’t there?
Hold out your hands once. Let me see your fists. Make a fist. In the old days, when the Teacher prayed, he clenched so hard that afterward, when he opened his hand, it hurt. How much strength he must have put in! Even as the sweat ran, he clenched tight and made his vows. Clench hard once. Let us tighten one more belt like this and go on. To where? To Golgotha, I say. Which Golgotha? To the worldwide Golgotha, the cosmic Golgotha, I say. So we are people who must restore even the spiritual world.
While you live, you must liberate at least three of your ancestors. Do you understand what I mean? Why so? It is to resolve the han of three generations—Adam, Jesus, and the coming Lord. When you die, you will know whether the words of the Unification Church Teacher were a lie or not.
Before the Blessed Families, the gate of the Kingdom of Heaven is all open, but when one cannot carry out the responsibility on the principle that I am now speaking of, one cannot pass through that gate. Unless one sets up the condition of indemnity, one cannot pass. That is why one must seek three sons and daughters and enter through that gate.
The Teacher has the mission of completing the responsibility of the First Israel, the Second Israel, and the Third Israel. For you to become descendants of the Third Israel, you must seek and set up three sons and daughters, twelve sons and daughters, seventy, and up to one hundred twenty.
To become a member of that nation, you must first have a family. To have a family, you must first restore Adam’s family and Noah’s family. Otherwise, you cannot become a people. That is why the Blessed Families must all suffer.
If it does not work the first time, you must do it a second time. You must go back again. Blessed Families, understand? That is what matters. School is not the issue. Such trifling things are not the issue. Knowing this, let us all tighten our belts and go to the cosmic Golgotha.
All of you, what does the word “Gyeongsang” in North Gyeongsang Province mean?
Is it bad, or is it good? Is Gyeongsang a good place or a bad place? When you go out witnessing, and someone asks, “Is the Unification Church good?” you say, “Yes, it is good,” but you don't understand why it is good. People of Gyeongsang, answer.
What is “gyeong”?
It is the “gyeong” of “joyous (慶),” isn’t it? And the “sang”? It is the “sang” of “rather, still (尙),” isn’t it? What else does it mean? It carries the meaning of “to exalt.” It means to rise. I learned one thing coming to Gyeongsang today—that the character “sang” for “rather” also carries the meaning of “to exalt,” that is, of ascending to heaven.
Gyeongsang! The name is good. The name is good, but will it do for the substance to be bad? Will it do for the substance to be a swindler or a troublemaker? The name is good. The name is good, but what about the people? Good, you say? Then I tell you to show that goodness.
Then to whom will you show it? To the people of Daegu?
Before your parents and brothers? If you are to show it, I tell you to show it before God, who commands all the nations amid glory. You must show it before the commanding God, not the sorrowing God, I say. That is our standard.
Gyeongsang is perfect. This is not flattery; I speak for fear of getting a group beating here. It is simply the truth. The name is a good name, but I tell you not to be good in name only. Understand?
Now is not the time for praying “in the name of Jesus.” That time has passed. Now is not the age of salvation by name. It is the age of salvation by substance. Now all Christians pray in the name of Jesus. But the Teacher does not pray that way. It is Jesus who is needed, not the name of Jesus.
The word “Father” exists by the thousands and tens of thousands. But the substance is one alone. Is that not so? So, to go to the heavenly kingdom, must one ride on the substance of Jesus or ride on his name?
Therefore, I hope that you, even alone, will become a substantial being who can take responsibility for everything bad about Gyeongsang and vindicate it as a good Gyeongsang. I hope you will become a substantial being who can take responsibility beyond Gyeongsang for the whole three-thousand-li peninsula.
Whatever You Do, Do It with Your Life on the Line
Now, in the future, the Teacher intends to put you aboard clandestine boats and send you even into Communist China.
Who could not go by openly obtaining a travel permit?
Even the most despised beggar in the village could do that. But we must board clandestine boats and go even into the communist bloc to evangelize. The Teacher is now negotiating such matters. How far must one go? One must go to Golgotha. One goes to the worldwide Golgotha, the cosmic Golgotha.
If God had commanded Jesus, would he have said he could not go?
It is the Teacher’s han that he never got to fight in the army. Having been born a man, how good it would be to fight just once—against the enemy, I mean. That does not mean it will be so with you. Do not think such a thing. Having been born a man, it is necessary to experience army life once.
Unification Church members must be able to do anything. In the future, I intend to bring together young people in their twenties from all over the country and teach them Tang Soo (당수). I intend to make them into people of upright spiritual armament who do not grow conceited about having skill in their hands and to dispatch three or four to each township. Thereby, I mean to make all the unruly gangs unable to stir.
To achieve that, one must make their parents pleased. Saying, “I, too, in the old days, was worse than your son. Look at this fist. Look at my body, look at my eyes—by any measure, I was not made gently but roughly. I, who lived just like your son, was changed like this by the Unification Church,” and actually showing the results, then they say, “Ah, though he looks like that on the outside, how happy must the parents of such sons and daughters be!” Then, having made it so, when you say, “Your son or daughter is pointed at and reviled in the village as a hoodlum; would you like me to make such a son or daughter into a fine person like myself?” they say, “Oh, Your Majesty, please do it right away.” It is set up to be so.
Now, in the future, I will set up a training hall (dojang), gather them all inside, and have masters who hold several dan ranks in Tang Soo train them until their bodies are worn limp. I will train them hard.
If their skills are lacking, they must learn, must they not? When one is in the position of learning, one is a private. I will give these people armament in the Principle and set them up as a vanguard to crush the satanic world. It is the Teacher’s thought to make such warriors.
Now, many Tang Soo people will enter the Unification Church. Such people have work to do. That does not mean that, after making them work, one kicks them away. Thereafter, we go together. So do not worry, and train your bodies and minds diligently.
Is the Teacher stout or slender? “Stout.” What is stout about him? It is only that he wears bulky clothes. The Teacher is stout like this, but when it comes to speed, he is very fast. Even in track and field, he was never pushed below third place. However poorly he did, he managed at least that. He never did worse than that. Whatever he set his mind to do, he would do, even if it meant staying up all night.
So in wrestling, in his middle school days, he was champion of the whole school. Even in the village, in wrestling, if he lost even once, he would grab a tree and train all night long. He would never quit until he had received that person’s surrender.
He thought that for a man to lose to such a person was to become nothing but that person’s servant. So he practiced day and night, and even while sleeping, he studied how to win.
One must have something like that. That is why he became quite famous in the village. There was no sport he could not do. Even in track and field, he was never out of the rankings.
If he stood to be left out of the rankings, he would not lay a hand on it from the start. But once he laid a hand on it, he would win even if his body were torn to shreds.
The Teacher sometimes goes to Gangwon Province and hunts as well. This time, he followed around a marksman who had hunted for thirty years. For several days, when that man went fast, I went fast after him, and when he went slowly, I went slowly after him. Then that man marveled, “Ah, that gentleman who came from Seoul!” He had thought to give me a hard time for a few days, but his calculations were off.
I tell Unification Church members not to come in last. If you do not lay a hand on it, fine; but once you have, you must be willing to stake your life. “Before I die, I can never retreat. I cannot bear not to win. I will conquer ”you"—such a fierce conviction is needed. Understand?
We Who Must Create a New World of Culture and Knowledge
You must be that way wherever you go. It is the same at your workplace. The Teacher means to find you employment where he can. But when the Teacher meets your superiors and asks, “Is it fair to pay that person a small wage?” you must not become a person of whom they say, “At first we paid a high wage, but after a month or two we have decided we must cut it.”
Once a man has made up his mind to do something, he must do it even if it kills him. You must go forward with such conviction. And where must you go forward to? You must go forward with vigor toward the worldwide Golgotha.
If you do not go forward with vigor, what must the Teacher do?
He must drive you on even by striking you with a club. Does God wish us to go slowly or quickly? Think about it. We must restore Korea and restore the world, so how anxious He must be! There is no time. We are pressed. That is why the Teacher, who knows that will, wishes, if you do not go, to drive you on quickly, even by beating you. Later, you will be grateful. For three years, I told you to witness, and you, barely hanging on, have followed without falling away.
Now, for four years, we must restore all things. So I am thinking of having you do something else as well. We must doggedly make money too. The refugees who came down from the North seized the economic power of Korea in about ten years.
If the people from the North seize economic power in ten years, just watch how many years it takes the Unification Church to seize economic power.
As I said before, we must make money. My way of making money is to embrace the pitiful people of the world and bestow upon them. My learning is to teach them the secret of cutting through the barbed wire of the satanic world. By learning this, we attain the final purpose of human life.
By attaining the final purpose that the people of this world have not attained, we can become worthy human beings who are blessed before God and ancestors who, as victorious human beings, can be tenderly attended.
Then what must you now do?
You must tighten your belts and transcend worldly things. Centered on a new ideal, we must widen the foothold of a new world, set up a new sovereignty, and create a new world of culture and a new world of knowledge. Understand? Those who will truly do it, raise your hands.
Will you do it, or will you not?
Do not do it just because you are looking at the Teacher’s face. Put your hands down. Then let us sing one song, and the Teacher too must rest a little.
